Very nice
Was very impressed with how stocked the house was, which made it very homey. My husband and all his siblings with spouses stayed for a few days, as this is the middle for everyone. Was a very nice stay. More room than the pictures look.

2023 Widow’s Weekend
Great place to hang out with friends. Fabulous location close to all amenities. We gave it 4 stars because basic cleaning (floors and tables) seemed to have been overlooked for our stay. Overall, we would definitely come back!

Wonderful spot to get away!
The house was a perfect spot to use as a basecamp for our fall adventures. We could walk to the beach and restaurants, and easily hit the road to get to the sights around Grand Marais.

Perfect getaway!
I’m familiar with many areas in the UP and have stayed in Grand Marais before during the winter, but had never been to the Big House. I booked it for a long weekend getaway for my father and I- he had never been to the UP before and I knew the location would be perfect for us. I had originally planned on bringing one of my dogs, which led me to this place, but didn’t end up bringing her. The house was better than expected; plenty of UP charm and was more than big enough. The view, the fireplace, cleanliness, amenities, and proximity to town were all major pluses for us. If I had one gripe, and it would be completely trivial, it would be that the smart tv was a challenge to navigate. I would absolutely…and will likely…stay here again!

Why they chose this property

This property has been in the family for nearly 200 years. The original structure, “The Little House,” was cut in half and moved up the hill in 1989. The home was occupied by the family until both parents passed away. It became a rental in 2009. It is owned and operated by five brothers who formed an LLC, Foundation Rentals, to be able to pay the taxes and keep the property in the family. Two of the brothers presently live within a mile of the house. The original house was much closer to the sidewalk than the current one. The original Little House, where the five brothers and spent their summers with family in Grand Marais, is currently on Ridge Road, occupied by one of the brothers.
