Large and accommodating country home
Our gathering of 14 family members for four days to celebrate a big birthday was terrific. This home was made for large gatherings. The well supplied kitchen has two refrigerators, two sinks and two dishwashers. The older part of the house has been renovated. and the new half is quite modern. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms functional. High ceilings with numerous windows enhance the spaciousness. The home was warm and comfortable for all. It has plenty of parking and access is excellent. A great place!

Great house with spaces for the whole group. We had a great hike exploring the property.
Great few days, quite the getaway in a huge home that felt so quaint at the same time.

Lovely Get Away
We had our family Christmas weekend and it was prefect. The kitchen was well stocked and great for preparing meals. The large island was a terrific spot to set up buffet. The spacious common areas allowed for multiple activities to happen at once. There was a wide variety of room set ups so different size families had room for all to find a bed. There was a storm and power went off but the emergency lightning made it safe. We had ping pong & pool (small size) tournaments in game room, yoga and puzzling in library, grab bag and murder mystery in living room and board games in dining room. Fun was had by all. We even had time to walk around Town and hike at a Nature Preserve. Excellent area to explore and super property for a large gathering. We plan to return!

The house has plenty of space: 9 bedrooms, 4 full and 2 half baths, and on the lower level a game room for Ping-Pong and billiards or Scrabble and a library for quiet reading. A bath on the main level is ADA-compliant.

Outdoor delights include a fire pit (marshmallows required), charcoal grill, picnic tables for dining al fresco, and meadows in all directions inviting you to plan a picnic. If you crave an outdoor game, the house is equipped for croquet, bocce, badminton, volleyball, and basketball.

The property has marked hiking trails and if you’re up for a 5-mile walk, you can amble around Mt. Hoag; turn left out the front door and head up the road, bear left at the first fork, follow the main road, and after about two hours you will be back home.

Shopping
Groceries can be purchased at PriceChopper in Granville, NY (20 minutes) or Manchester (30 minutes). Alcoholic beverages are sold at food stores in Vermont and at state stores in New York. Rutland, 30 miles up Rt. 7, has PriceChopper, Hannaford, Walmart, and Aldi.
In the summer Dorset has a farmer’s market on Sunday morning. Wallingford Locker is open all year around and sells locally raised meat and poultry. Most of their goods are frozen, so plan ahead. Their bacon is famous. Bring a check or cash; they don’t accept credit cards.
Sheldon’s in Pawlet sells wine and Cabot cheese in a big wheel and is a convenient place to fill gaps in your larder. They only accept cash, but there is an ATM in front of the store.

Why they chose this property

Hildene in Manchester was the home of Robert Todd Lincoln, the only son of Abraham and Mary Lincoln who survived to adulthood. The property was acquired in 1978 by the HIldene Trust, which restored and maintains the property. The furnishings are almost entirely from the Lincoln family. Please see website for hours during the pandemic.

Equestrian Activities
For equestrians, there’s the thoroughbred track at Saratoga, horseback riding at Chipman stables, and the Vermont Summer Festival in East Dorset, which runs from early July to mid-August. Flower Brook Farm has enough acreage to park multiple horse trailers and East Dorset is less than a 30-minute drive.

Cycling
If cycling is your thing, we often see cyclists along the Danby/Pawlet road but if you want to cycle on a path, the Delaware and Hudson Rail-Trail is accessible from Poultney and goes beyond Granville Village, NY.

Golf

Lake St. Catherine Country Club has a public golf course.

Tennis

Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester has six public courts.

Dining Out

Our own Pawlet has The Barn, with live music every Wednesday night. You can find it just past the post office on the road to Granville, up a sloping drive.
About a 30-drive is the Victorian Inn at Wallingford, wonderful food in enchanting surroundings.
Thirty or more minutes in the opposite direction in Manchester is the Wilburton Inn. Wednesday night in the summer is farm night, featuring locally grown produce and even group singing. Farm nights are great fun!
