Excellent Family Vacation!
We stayed here in August 2024 and have a wonderful time. The property was well maintained and very clean. The property had plenty of amenities. We were so pleased with owners communication and helpfulness. They literally had everything we needed from towels, firewood, utensils, water toys, and outdoor furniture. They had really covered their bases! We would definitely stay here again!

Relaxing Getaway on Perfect Lake
The property is quaint and was conducive to my family relaxing together from the hot tub to the outdoor dining area to the living room/kitchen area to the beach chairs. The best feature though is the new fire pit area that sits raised and overlooking the lake. So relaxing. The lake is not huge which we love because it means very little boat traffic. During the weekdays it was like having our own lake where we used paddle boards (rented), floated in tubes, roamed in the paddleboat, or just swimming. The property is close to town for food runs or a quick bite. The bike riding options are plentiful. A nice 18 hole public golf course is less than 10 minutes away. Traverse City in 30 minutes. Sleeping Bear Dunes in less than 40 min. Everything you need from this central access point. Book it and relax.

Amazing
We are so glad we found the Hidden Gem Cottage on Bass Lake! The property is even better than the pictures show and so many amenities are provided. It is clear the owners truly care that guests have a great experience. The lake is so quiet and relaxing, and our kids had a blast on the water slide, paddle boat, in the sand, etc. This was the perfect getaway for our family of four.

2nd stay as great as the 1st
Stayed here in September 2020 with our adult son and retuned this August with our daughter and husband and grandchildren. 5 yr old granddaughter loved the water and beach and our 2 yr old grandson couldn’t get enough of the beach. Close to many nice restaurants and wineries. This year did pick you own bouquet at Old Mission Flowers and visited the Cognition Museum in Beulah. Both received a thumbs up by the kids. We liked Rove Winery, 2Lad Winery and Left Foot Charley’s. Would recommend a trip to lake Ann Brewery for bands at 3 and 7-pizza and sandwiches from the place next door.

Good - Not Great
The experience overall was positive. Both Christine and her husband were responsive thorough-out and helpful. The cottage came with some essentials, like lots of kids toys, a couple boats, a washer-dryer, towels, and beach toys. There is also a great fire pit and plenty of firewood. There were some drawbacks. The two proper bedrooms have little ventilation, the ladder on at least one of the bunk beds was loose, and the tall dresser in one of the rooms is not fastened to the wall - things to have on your radar if your kids are young. The third bedroom is a loft, which is not clear from the listing. There are anthills in the yard and a beehive hanging over the beach so we spent more time away from the house than planned (hopefully that has been removed). Finally, when we left, we were charged an additional sum for damages and additional cleaning. Some of it may be fair, since our young ones did get some crayon on things when were packing up (we are sorry). However, the rest seemed like nitpicking to justify the exorbitant charge, such as leaving dirty dishes on the counter (which was inaccurate — they were clean and there is no dishwasher), a broken water cooler (only the cold water button was working on arrival), and dinging us for leaving beach towels stacked outside when there are no checkout instructions. In short, it was fair for the owner to charge us for the crayons but just be aware that they may charge you for extras if they’re annoyed.

Clean, Cute, and Private
Hidden Gem was a great home. It was super clean. The bed up stairs was comfortable. There was a window air conditioner that we ran all night. The kids loved their rooms. There are nice size dresses with a little clothes rod next to them. We don’t being a lot to the lake, so there is enough space for our clothes. I loved that there was water provided, thoughtful touch. The few suggestions I would make for fellow travelers is to bring mosquito spray!! I learned from other experiences. I brought a natural fogger and repellent device. The fire doesn’t keep them away. They do have tiki torches, if you bring the fluid. It makes is so much more enjoyable sitting outside. Another traveler suggested “water shoes”. I read it too late and didn’t bring them. They would be super helpful at this lake. There is a great metal sand rake that we used to clear the water area a few times! That was nice. Great vacation, thank you!

Loved it!
The cottage was exactly as described and by far, the cleanest rental I have stayed in. Our son (5) and daughter (2) had a great time catching minnows, fishing, using the paddle boat and playing on the beach. Christine and Mike were great hosts and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a rental in northern MI. We hope to return!

Perfect family cottage
This cottage is the best we have rented. Plenty of space for a family of 7. The kids loved the lake and the hot tub and we were able to rent a seadoo very easily with drop off and pick up. The owners are amazing and very responsive to our questions. This is the perfect summer getaway - look no further!

Perfect Michigan Vacation
Property is as advertised and Michael and Christine were great to work with! Great location and easy to get to Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Suttons Bay, etc. Everything we needed (including firewood) was on site and it was perfect for our family of five. Bass lake is beautiful and water is clean but water shoes are highly recommended due to mucky lake bottom.

Perfect family escape
We had a fantastic weekend at the Hidden Gem cottage. The cottage was very clean and the owners provided for a relaxed and wonderful experience ... from the moment we walked in the door to the day we left. It was unseasonably hot in northern Michigan and the lake was perfect for my boys. They had a great time swimming, sliding, jumping off the dock, fishing - you name it, they enjoyed it. The owners also ensured that the indoors of the cottage were cool and comfortable as well, with temps in the upper 80s and 90s outside (it almost was too cool at times, but not really :) The cottage is a short trip to Traverse City and Sleeping Bear and we explored both. All in all it truly was the perfect family escape. Thank you!!

This cottage truly is a Hidden Gem
We had a wonderful time at this cottage and made some great memories. We spent a week there mid-August with our 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter. The house was spotlessly clean and everything we could have needed was provided. The house was perfect to keep the kids entertained while we relaxed, with a sandy beach for them to swim from, the row boat and the paddle boat (which was their favorite). They also enjoyed the slide on the floating dock. The owners have gone above and beyond to ensure their guests have a great time at the cottage. A highlight was when we hired a ski boat and spent a day tubing with the kids, I thoroughly recommend American Boat Rentals who delivered the boat to us at the boat launch which was only half a mile away. The location of the cottage at Interlochen was great and we had some great day trips to Glen Arbor and Frankfort. I thoroughly recommend this cottage and will consider it for future vacations.

Perfect spot for families with children.
What makes this property great is it's especially designed for families with children. The two bunk bedrooms on the ground floor, master bedroom in the loft, the quiet yard with a sandy beach and toys for geared for kids, paddle pontoon, and rowboat, all made it convenient for our family. We didn't really want to venture out much, and the set up here made our staying in much easier. Extra points for the kitchen. It's really the little things like having a colander, prep knifes, vegetable peeler, blender, etc that made eating-in more comfortable. That may seem small, but when you travel and want to cook at your cottage, having a fully-stocked kitchen is a big plus. Not very many vacation homes I've stayed at think through those details, but the Hidden Gem did. It was also nice to have a gas range. It's so much easier to cook on, and the water cooler was a nice touch. The location is nice, too. It's like that scene in O Brother, Where Art Thou: "Well, ain't this place a geographical oddity!" It's basically 30-minutes from everywhere (more or less), so when we did venture out, everything was a short trip--Frankfort, TC, Empire, SBD, Leland, etc. Can't speak for the single couples out there, but as family with small kids, highly recommend the Hidden Gem. Thanks for making the stay so nice.

Perfect Vacation for Young Family
This property was perfect for our 2, 5, 7, and 8 year old as well as the adults. I do not know how we'll vacation anywhere else and enjoy it as much. The owners seem to have thought of everything from life jackets in every size, water activities, sand toys, marshmallow sticks to toddler plates, sippy cup, and beds with optional rails. The property, itself, is very well kept and the lake is shallow at the edges for the kids, clean, and quiet (maybe not when we were there :) ). We are so very grateful we had the chance to stay here and make the memories we did. We hope everyone the same.

No One Wanted to Leave
Where to start. What a wonderful week at a beautiful property with gracious hosts. Our 5 grandchildren ages 7 to 2 loved everything and said it was the best vacation ever. Swimming was great, the slide was a hit, fishing daily and the paddle boat was a highlight. The property is designed so well inside and out. The special greeting with chips and salsa was wonderful. We had everything we needed, even a crockpot. We went to the Cherry Festival, Incredible Mo's for bowling & Arcade when it rained, Sleeping Bear and of course Moomers for Ice Cream. Had a wonderful family meal at Boone's Long's Lake Inn. We wanted a relaxing and peaceful time and it was a success. We couldn't have asked for more. The fire pit by the quiet lake and the sand beach provided the great environment and then add the hot tub ... relaxation at its best. Highly recommend for families with young children and grandparents too! Definitely a property we would love to visit again.

Great trip
We had a great trip at hidden gem cottage. the yard is perfect and just as described, the kids had a blast swimming on the beach and going down the slide. The beach is soft sand which is great and perfect for our 4 year old to play in. The water is shallow and like most inland lakes can get pretty mucky if you go more than a few feet so swim socks make it much more pleasant for adults to swim in. The yard was the perfect size with room to play, a great big firepit and a relaxing hammock with great views. It was a great get a way.

About the host

Hosted by Christine

Host profile image
My husband Michael and myself purchased the property when it had a little rustic cottage on it that we used for a couple of years as a family. We decided to remodel it and start sharing it with other families wanting to visit "up north". We have enjoy meeting families since 2008 and each year since, watching families experience togetherness...this has been our goal; bringing families together for memories that will last a lifetime.

What makes this property unique

We feel the best part of Bass Lake is the size. The 100 acre lake is large enough to enjoy many water activities yet small enough to not have all the loud noise of the larger lakes. You can experience quiet surroundings, amazing stars and the beauty of nature that's all around you. You can use all 5 senses to the fullest...sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Something that is hard to find unless you're relaxed with family in a peaceful place you can call yours for the week...Hidden Gem Cottage, Relax and leave your busy life at home.
