About this property

Enchanted hideaway for 2. Walk to beaches

Calabash Cottage is a 1 room efficiency with separate open air bathroom building. There's an outside dish washing stand plus a Black Berkey water purifying filtered system for drinking water, that you fill yourselves. The bathroom is a separate open air building (10 steps away) and water is gravity fed from a 60 gal. holding tank on the roof for toilet, shower and sink. There's a gal. of drinking water supplied (that you re-fill yourself) for brushing teeth at the bathroom sink. Within the Nirvana property it's proximity is private but close enough to be used as a 2nd bedroom to Fiddlewood Cottage. Includes outside deck with dining table, 2 comfortable deck chairs underneath mature shade trees surrounded by lush gardens. Overlooking Mandahl pond & Grootpan Bay where sunsets create end of the day enchantment, this space is perfect for 2 single persons(twin beds) or a couple (converted king). You'll be sharing the property with the Fiddlewood Cottage but both areas are separate with private entrances. With emphasis on quiet and solitude we attract guests who are respectful of those requirements.

Magical
Perfect for anyone who wants to sleep in nature with the comfort of a good bed: amazing view, bird songs, stars, walk to two rocky beaches with a sandy beach ten minutes drive, comfy deck chairs, nearby fish market, and a grill, hot plate and everything we needed for cooking. And a delightful and communicative host. We’ll be back!

Quiet and relaxing stay.
Mary was an outstanding host. She communicated regularly, provided lots of valuable insight to both enjoy my stay and the best places to snorkel on St. John. Her place is quaint and relaxing. Would definitely return there if I return to St. John.

Calabash Cottage Carefree
Fun, nature filled stay. Close to private beaches, quiet, star filled nights, butterflies, hermit crabs & a very attentive host. Luxury not a descriptor! Take care to follow host's instructions and you'll have a wonderful time.

Great spot!
If you’re willing to go with just the necessities of day to day living, this is the place for you. Actually, we found showering and taking care of our personal needs in the semi-private “bathroom” an easier transition than we expected. We felt more of a part of the landscape than if we had been insulated in a motel room somewhere. The setting is great and being right down the street from Salt Pond and Ram’s Head was a special treat, not to mention some of Mary’s favorite secret spots. We filled 7 days with hikes, beaches, and more. It was great!

About the host

Hosted by Les Anderson

Host profile image
A full time resident since 1981 living in East End, St. John with artist/husband Les Anderson, who's parents sailed into Round Bay in1960 bought property and built a home. We know the island intimately and after 10 hurricanes still LOVE living here! I managed 10 vacation rental homes from 1986-1996 and know what guests deserve in order to feel welcomed and comfortable on their vacations.

Why they chose this property

This side of the island is like old-time St. John. It, for the most part, has escaped gentrification and remains very rural. On a dead end road, off the beaten path but close walking distance to fabulous snorkeling, diving, plus the bus, it doesn't get any better!

What makes this property unique

We'll never have any houses in front of our views because we boarder the National Park. Hiking everywhere, great beaches where one can have some all to themselves most of the time. Quiet, no street lights, no traffic, just clear skies, with the sounds of Mom Nature everywhere.
