About this property

Enjoy Your Own Secluded North Woods Resort on a Small Private Lake

Horseshoe Lake Hideaway resort consists of a lodge, a cabin, and a duplex unit situated on 22 wooded acres on private, no-motor Horseshoe Lake. The resort sleeps 21 guests. Ideal for extended families, reunions, or retreats.

The resort has 800 feet of frontage on spring-fed Horseshoe Lake, which has been estimated to be 15 acres in size and up to 18 feet deep. The property sets back a long wooded lane offering tranquility and seclusion while being only minutes from town.

The lodge unit has 5 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms and sleeps 11. The stand-alone cabin has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and sleeps 4 in beds. The cabin also has a fold-out couch to accommodate up to 2 more guests. The duplex unit has a double-locked inner door dividing the two sides. The rental side of the duplex has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and sleeps 4. In all, there are 14 beds available for guests plus the fold-out couch.

NOTE: One side of the duplex unit is not rented out and is reserved for the Owners, who usually are not but could be present during part of your stay.

Other than the Owner's unit, this rental includes the entire resort and all amenities. Bed linens, blankets, and towels provided. Kitchens fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, etc. Each unit has a coffee maker, toaster, and microwave.

The duplex unit has a window air conditioner. The cabin and lodge DO NOT have air conditioning. Each bedroom has its own box fan. Jet tub in cabin along with a separate shower. Private decks on cabin and lodge.

Charcoal grill and picnic table provided for each unit. Campfire area with two firepits. Each unit has a wall-mounted flat-screen TV with Direct TV service and a DVD player. The televisions are not "smart" TVs. Hughes Net satellite wifi service is best described as better than nothing and is the only thing available in the area. It's slow but usually ok for web browsing.

Lodge has a game room/recreation room with a small ping-pong table, dartboard, and board games, as well as a small TV with a DVD/VCR and children's movies. Cell phone service is usually good with Verizon. Guests have reported that ATT cell service can be spotty. No laundry facilities are available for Guests at the resort, but there is a nice laundromat a few minutes away in the town of Mio.

Excellent bass and panfish fishing in the lake, which has only two other waterfront property owners and no public access. Large perch occasionally are caught in the middle of the lake. Small sandy beach area for swimming and wading. Like many northern Michigan lakes, the spring-fed lake is clean for swimming, but the lake bottom turns from sand to "muck" approximately 15 feet from shore.

The resort is located in a secluded, heavily wooded area, and guests may encounter ticks in the summer months, particularly if they venture off of the maintained grounds and trails and into the woods. The overwhelming majority of the ticks in this part of Michigan are known as "dog ticks," which do not carry Lyme disease.

Two canoes, two pedal boats, a row boat, and a kayak will be available for resort guests. Deer, turkey, geese, and other wildlife frequently observed on the property. A bald eagle also has been seen on occasion. Numerous other lakes within a short driving distance.

Area attractions include fly fishing or canoeing/tubing on the AuSable River and golf courses. Although ATVs and other off-road vehicles are not permitted to be ridden on resort property or on adjacent private property, such vehicles may be brought to the resort and transported to nearby public riding areas. Horseshoe Lake Hideaway resort is about a 45-minute drive to Lake Huron and less than 2 hours from Mackinaw Island.

Owners purchased the Horseshoe Lake Hideaway property about 12 years ago. In addition to enjoying the property personally, the Owners have spent several summers remodeling and renovating the cabins, lodge, and duplex. The 2020 season was the first time in more than a decade that the resort's units were available for guests to rent. Horseshoe Lake Hideaway was built in the 1960s. While it retains a "rustic" feel with much of the original knotty-pine interior, the Owners strive to make the units clean, comfortable, and appealing.

Fantastic family retreat
Our family absolutely loved our stay at Horseshoe Lake – what a hidden gem! We were an extended family group of about 14, and having 3 separate sleeping units and kitchens was perfect for us. No struggles with finding enough fridge space or oven space! :) I have to say — I feel like the pictures on VRBO don't even do the property justice (it's better!). The lake is beautiful and private, there are plenty of outdoor areas for relaxing and playing games, and a great firepit. Plus, the property owner was kind and always quick to respond to questions, providing all the info we needed to enjoy our stay. The cabins included plenty of towels, bedding, and more very thoughtful amenities. For any birders out there, a bald eagle, great blue heron, and solitary sandpiper were frequent visitors to the lake on our stay. This is included in the listing, but the only thing I would note is that there is no laundry on site. Just a matter of packing enough clothes for your stay, and making sure to get beach towels out hanging in the sun to keep them dry! (There's also a laundromat in town.) 10/10 would recommend for any group, especially a larger extended family/friend group!

Perfect place for a big active family!!!
This our second time at the lakehoise and again it did not dissapoint. The place has tons of rooms for our big family reunion, we literally used every outdoor game, row boat, canoe, paddle boat there was. We hiked on all the trails and even played pickel ball in the court yard which doug patched up specifically for use to use !! We love this place and plan on returning for many more summers in the future. Thanks doug!!!

Hidden Gem
We enjoyed our stay at Horseshoe Lake Hideaway. Everything was very clean and tidy. The three separate buildings provided us with a lot of space but are close enough to still feel like part of the group. It is clear that the owners take care of the property and pride in its beauty. They show a lot of attention to detail in both the aesthetic of the property and the little touches like leaving a tea cake for us. They left a basket of small toiletry items in case we forgot anything, fresh bottles of hand soap at the sinks, dish sponges in each kitchen, fresh bottles of bodywash in the bathrooms, and towels…so many soft towels! The kitchen and grill area are well stocked. I only used my own knives. I couldn’t find an ice-cream scoop, but it could have been in another kitchen I didn’t get a chance to search. There are no containers with lids, so bring containers, Ziplocks, or saranwrap if you think you will have leftovers. We brought lots of drinking water; it is very expensive at the local grocery store, and we used it to cook as well as the water smelled like well water. Coffee is ready! The owners left coffee, water for the pots, powdered creamer, and sugar in an adorable display in each kitchen. The lake is beautiful with lots of small fish for catch and release. It is not great for swimming because the bottom is typical for inland Michigan lakes. However, we still swam. Like another commenter said, one room is really bunkbeds in a large closet, but it does have its own

Family time.
We loved this rental! The property was as described, very well stocked and welcoming. We had a range in age from 9 months to 87 years -13 of us-and each of us had plenty of space. Lots of games and the kids enjoyed fishing and swimming. The lake is quite clear. Doug was a perfect host and very quick to respond to any questions. Would not hesitate to rent again.
