About this property

Somers holiday cottage

Our cosy little cottage is in the heart of the beautiful quiet Mt Somers village, with amazing views of the night sky all for free. We have a General Store, Local Garage, Quaint little Library, a Restaurant, Tavern and a Jewellery shop. Mt Somers is the gateway to the Hakatere Conservation Area which consists of Lake Clear Water, Lake Camp and Lake Heron to name just a few. We have many beautiful walks in the area such as Mt Somers Track for the intermediate to advanced trampers, and for those who want a gentle easy walk there is the Nature trail along Woolshed Creek. A short distance from Mt Somers Village is "Endoras" or Mt Sunday the capital of Rohan was built in the year 2000, where a large part of Lord of the Rings was filmed, although the buildings were removed you can still look for footprints on Endoras. On a fine day there a beautiful view to be had from the top,. For your winter enjoyment we are 35km from the famous Mt Hutt Ski field. Within 30 to 40 mins drive are the towns of Ashburton, Methven, Geraldine, and Mayfield where you will find great restaurants and cafes plus many shopping opportunities. The little town of Mayfield 12 km from Mt Somers hosts Overflow the most amazing Retro store with heaps of great antiques and collectables, vintage and antique glass, china, pottery and ceramics, furniture, kitchenware, and outside architectural and farm antiques on offer. Well worth a visit. A 20 min drive gets you to Methven with its restaurants and pubs. You can also go the Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa for a relaxing soak or massage, a fantastic way to finish a day. They also have a cafe where you can purchase some delectable treats. In the winter months there is also the New Improved Stavely Ice rink for skating and curling. The Sharplin falls reserve is once again open with its new walkways and bridges well worth the trip,

Mt Somers Cottage
We greatly enjoyed our stay in the cottage in the country. It is well appointed for self catering with kitchen facilities that include a full oven and dishwasher. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom has a bath with shower over it. There was a stereo, a selection of books to read and a DVD player....this was useful as we had taken some films to watch as television viewing is the Freeview channels. The cottage is in a lovely garden setting and my husband had a good view of the stars at night with his telescope. Our only criticism would be that the two seater sofa is not the most comfortable and the fry pan is past, causing food to stick to its surface.....otherwise it is perfect for a relaxing getaway. The small town is limited for evening meals in the early part of the week but Stronescrubie opens Thursday to Sunday and we enjoyed good service and a tasty meal. We enjoyed lunch at the nearby Staveley Cafe and there are light lunch options and coffee at the Mt Somers Store which is worth a visit. An option for earlier in the week for evening meals is the Black Panther Pub in Mayfield, recommended by the owners of the cottage. Many thanks to Leonie and Peter.

Cosy wee cottage set in lovely garden.Peaceful, rural location. Loved finding all the surprises in the secret garden! And enjoyed watching the birds feasting on the apples. The bed was not overly comfortable, we did flip the mattress, which helped, but maybe time for a new one. Other than that, we had a lovely weekend and would stay again. Thanks!

Great base for Mt. Somers Tracks
The house is warm and cozy, set in a beautiful garden. Be sure to check out the 'Secret Garden' along the edges of the main garden! We stayed just 4 days, but were able to hike nearby everyday!

Quiet, scenic stay
Situated in a beautiful garden with a weather proof deck on which to sit and enjoy the view. Perfect for those who like to do their own cooking. This area has some good day (quite strenuous) walks with amazing views for your effort. The Mt Somers dairy has great icecreams to reward your efforts.

We are a Retired couple enjoying living in the this quiet village. We originally came from Christchurch and have been living here in Mt Somers since 2014 permanently. We have owned the property since 90's and used it as a holiday home.

Why they chose this property

We came to stay in the Domain at Mt Somers and on an evening walk found a for sale sign on the empty section. We loved the area so much and decided to purchase 2 of the empty sections. From then on it was landscaping and planting on every holiday. This is a beautiful part of the country and the night sky on a clear night is spectacular.

What makes this property unique

Mt Somers walkway is on the doorstep, with much more early history up the gorge.
