About this property

Monthly Rental- The Architect's Annex in the Bozeman's Downtown Brewery District

Imagine living nestled below the Bridger Mountains, yet up among the Aspen trees in the Historic Brewery District of Bozeman’s Northeast Neighborhood. You would be located on a quiet street with breweries, restaurants, and galleries within a stone’s throw. The heart of Main Street is only a couple of blocks away. Your views from the second and third floor are looking above to the Bridger Mountains, and below to the quiet bustle of people walking their dogs or taking their growler to one of our local breweries to be filled. At night there is a spectacular view of the moon moving across the clerestory windows from the master bedroom.

The Architects Annex was designed and built by architect and resident, Ken VanDeWalle and his wife Kristin VanDeWalle. The contemporary industrial space is an open loft design perfect for two people. The main living area is on the second floor, with access through a covered entrance balcony on the west side and a private covered balcony facing the residence interior courtyard, and the North Plum Avenue view to the south. As you walk into the entry room of the annex there is a laundry room on your left with a new Miele washer and dryer. Once through the sculptural entrance, the kitchen is to the right. The custom steel cabinets and pebbled concrete counter are well supplied with all of the tools you need to make a wonderful meal or just a delicious cup of coffee (no dishwasher). The attached bar makes for interactive cooking and easy serving. To the left is an inviting sitting area with a gas stove; the perfect spot to play a round of cribbage or read a good book. Step two steps down to the dining and living room with the walk-in closet and bathroom below the master bedroom area and off of the living room. There are two independent open third-floor lofts that are above the second-floor living area – one with the master bedroom & nook, and one as a fantastic study for remote working with a daybed.

The structure was built in a sustainable manner using primarily recycled old-growth timbers and materials. The annex is heated in the winter by in-floor radiant heating and in the summer, the 10 inch thick walls keep the building comfortable with the help of cool temperature evening flushing. Much of the interior fixtures and furniture are custom designed, including several beautiful sculptural steel doors, a two plank dining table, the bookcase/credenza unit, and an inviting steel bar and stools. The owners live across the courtyard in the main house.

Along with the elegant ambiance of the space, the annex can be filled with music to compliment the exceptional art from internationally renowned artists; American Expressionists Fay and Adair Peck, German Expressionist Alfred Hrdlicka, and Gyotaku fish printmaker, Charlie Brown.

Off-street and street parking is available. Utilities and secure ethernet connections & wifi included.

Enjoy the magic of the Architect’s Annex.

Top drawer!
The Annex is a wonderful retreat! The location is perfect - we walked to Main many times and often walked the historic neighborhoods, the parks and trails. Our hosts were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We could not give any higher rating - GREAT ALL AROUND!

Best hosts ever!
Kristen and Ken made out time in Bozeman even better by being the most friendly and engaging people. From sharing 4th of July best spots to view fireworks, the art walk , bear spray (thank you). They are just awesome hosts and the house is even better than described. I highly recommend staying at the annex and already wish I was back. Thank you both for being so amazing!

About the host

Host profile image
Ken and Kristin have called the North East Side of Bozeman home for nearly 30 years. The two met while skiing at Bridger Bowl and both share a love of architecture and design. Ken is an architect with a passion for sculptural forms - www.architectureindetail.com. Ken can typically be found working (or feeding the horses) at his architecture & building workshop. Kristin is the director of a local nonprofit who, when not working, can be found planning an outdoor bonfire dinner with family & friends or walking their dog in the foothills of the Bridgers. Their two sons are serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Why they chose this property

We would love to welcome you to Bozeman and the Northeast neighborhood. It is a very special place and we hope you find your experience in Montana unforgettable! We also hope you find a stay at the Architect’s Annex a wonderful memory for years to come.

The Annex was originally our home for a few years, where we lived with our two infant sons’ while we built our current home. Then, it was our design studio until 2020. In 2021, we decided to share the Annex with our guests. We look forward to the Annex’s story and magic continuing with you!

What makes this property unique

Here are a few interesting tidbits about the neighborhood and Annex:

Originally, the NE neighborhood was created for railroad workers. It was comprised of small lots and small homes. As you walk around, there is still evidence of the old neighborhood.

Today, the NE neighborhood is recognized by the city as the part of town where individuals have the opportunity to express their own sense of creativity.

During the summer months, the moon is low enough where it will magically traverse across the southern skies and in perfect alignment with the span of clerestory windows in the Annex.

The Architect’s Annex was built with sustainable materials and completed in 2000. The wood used is virgin growth Douglas Fir, recycled from warehouses built in the late 1800’s in Seattle. The 10” thick wall system is made from recycled Styrofoam and Portland cement.
