About this property

The Sandpiper: A Cozy Beachfront Cottage with Spectacular Ocean Views

If you are looking for a relaxing and memorable vacation away from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life; a vacation where you can reconnect with family or friends, or enjoy peaceful solitude, then you will find no better vacation spot than the cozy Sandpiper cottage, set across the lawn from the soft white sand of secluded Sandy River Beach; where the forest meets the sea, and nature abounds. You will enjoy magnificent ocean views and comfy accommodations. Our woodland, marsh, and beach offer discovery of a variety wildlife, including the occasional moose, deer, eagle, harbor seal or porpoise. Stroll the ½ mile sandy beach collecting sea glass and other treasures washed in by the gentling rolling waves. Explore tide-pools, the rockweed covered granite ledges, and the streams of our salt water estuary, to discover a variety of tidal treasures. At low tide, hike across the sand bar to explore a nearby island. Or just relax on the beach, watching the lobster boats travel the bay hauling their daily catch, and the sailboats off in the distance. You can experience breathtaking sunrises, the spectacular glow of the moon as it rises over the ocean, and wonderfully starry, starry nights. Be lulled to sleep by the rolling ocean waves and evergreens blowing with the night time breeze.

The cozy Sandpiper cottage has an open floor plan, with well equipped kitchen and cooking island. The oven and stove-top are electric. The large dining table connects the kitchen with a spacious living room and each area has spectacular ocean views. The inviting living room has a wood stove, a well-stocked library, satellite TV, DVD player and CD stereo. The cottage has two cozy bedrooms each with double beds, a bunk-room with over/under single bunk beds, and a full bath. The spacious front deck offers an additional relaxing or entertaining area, and the large lawn provides space for family outdoor games and activities.

The Sandpiper is part of a family owned complex that includes another rental cottage, and in addition to the private white sand beach also includes a 10 acre salt water marsh, a boat ramp and anchorage (26' boat maximum), all available for your use.

Fantastic vacation for our family
We've been home now for a couple of months and have enjoyed showing family/friends our beautiful photos and videos of our stay in the lovely Sandpiper cottage. It really was right on the ocean, with the best dish-washing view I've ever seen. Cottage had everything we needed. Books and wifi for the couple of foggy days, and Legos for our four-yr-old when he wasn't playing with hermit crabs, running on the beach or playing in the sand with the many provided beach toys (beach chairs were also provided). Such a beautiful part of the world to explore..so much majestic beauty coupled with genuine friendliness from John and Sharon. We loved walking on the beach in the morning with our coffee, looking for sea-glass and shells. The tides bring in different treasures every day! On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way. I was able to see constellations I hadn't seen in years. The night-time sky was truly breathtaking. All of us, my husband, my father and my little son had such a wonderful time there. "When are we coming back?" was a question I heard frequently from my son as we were getting ready to leave. THANK YOU for making this trip such a hit with everyone!

It was Heaven at the Sandpiper with you in Maine -
It was Heaven at the Sandpiper with you in Maine - hearing and watching the ocean waves on the beach, the beautiful view of the islands, the tall evergreens with the American flag flying in between against a backdrop of blue sky, the bright moon shining on the water, the sailboat ride and motor boat ride with Bob, eating lobsters, walking the beach to look for sea glass, the awesome camera shots, and the Sandpiper cottage and it's nautical theme (you thought of everything Kathie)-your friendliness and desire to please was so appreciated.

Great place to just relax!!
First vacation for my three daughters and myself. No spouses, children or grandchildren. What a perfect place to stay. We loved walking the beach and sitting in the sun. The Sandpiper was everything we expected. It was nice to be greeted by the owners when we arrived. They were very helpful with directions and places to visit.

The best place to unwind and unplug
We LOVE the sandpiper. Our family of six has now stayed twice at this beautiful beachfront cottage. The view is stunning, the house is cozy, clean and charming. The kids could spend all day playing on the beach or kayaking in the tidal marsh behind the house. The beach and views are so relaxing, I could just spend the whole day staring out into the ocean letting all the stress and tension of our fast paced life just slip away. On rainy days (which were very few although this is Maine after all) we put a fire in the wood burning stove and played games all afternoon. There is a DVD player for those that don't want to fully unplug and an assortment of movies available for viewing. There are so many great places to visit in the area and trails with stunning views. The owners family live right next door and are always ready with helpful advice about the region...like where to buy fresh off the boat seafood, which the kitchen is fully equipped to cook! It even has a lobster pot and YES we did make lobster. We also managed to find a farmers market in Machias (about 20 minutes away) and an amazing goat farm that sells cheese just up the road. If you are looking for a place on the beach away from all the hustle and bustle, then this is your place. They way life should be...

Coziest Cottage Around!
First I must start by saying that Sandy River Beach is a beautiful, special place! I could not possibly say enough wonderful things about The Sandpiper! It's super cozy, clean and well equipped! The kitchen and living room lay out is spacious, and the bedrooms are removed just perfectly enough so that when our girls go to bed at night, my husband and I can still enjoy a nice evening together without having to tip toe around. We love to eat on the deck and the yard in front is also a great spot for our girls to play while they wait for us to get ready to go down to the beach! The beach is absolutely glorious-not crowded at all! I love being able to watch our children run the length of the beach freely! It's our family time and we cherish every second we're there! And every year as we leave, we're already looking forward to the following year's visit!

My brothers and I grew up in New England, visiting our grandparents at their cottage on Sandy River Beach every summer of our childhood, creating wonderful memories of the beach and our grandparents. Even after moving to California, the love of our time spent at the beach with our grandparents drew us back to Sandy River Beach as many summers as possible. As adults, my brothers returned to Jonesport, and they are an integral part of the Jonesport community. I have continued to return to Sandy River Beach each summer, with my California husband, our children, and now our grandchildren in tow. In 1991 my husband and I purchased the Sandpiper cottage, adjacent to my grandparent's cottages. We have spent many summer vacations renovating it, and renting it to wonderful families, many of whom carry on a family tradition of annually renting cottages from our family, some dating as far back as the 1950s.

Why they chose this property

The Sandpiper is one of the few cottages in Jonesport that sits directly on a private sand beach; and the only one on property with access to a private estuary and boat launch right on the property. The combination of fresh and salt water areas offers our visiting families a fun and unique water play experience. The estuary also offers a wider variety of wild life viewing for our nature admiring quests.

What makes this property unique

The Sandpiper is still rather rustic, but all who stay here fall in love with what has become known as the 'cute and cozy' Sandpiper. My brothers and I live on the properties adjacent to the Sandpiper, and are 'onsite' to assist you with amenities and local information. We have a 2nd rental cottage (the Carriage House also listed on homeaway) on the property as well, and families often rent both cottages for family reunions or for vacations with friends. My nephew who is a lobster fisherman will deliver the 'lobsters to order' to your door!!!
