About this property

Scandinavian Saltbox House - Walk to USC Baseball

This is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom unit in a historic Olympia Mill Village "Saltbox" House in Columbia, SC. These homes were built in the late 19th century specifically for workers of the nearby Olympia and Granby Textile Mills. This particular saltbox house has been completely renovated but maintains the original hardwood floors, high ceilings, and large windows. The house is in the up and coming neighborhood of Olympia-Granby and is a few minutes walk of Founders Park, USC's Baseball Stadium.

The house is done in a Scandinavian Industrial Modern style with black metal, raw wood, and minimalist details throughout. We love the comfy furnishings and the functionality of each new and antique piece of furniture sourced from local shops. The decor pays homage to the historic textile mill industry of the neighborhood with antique bobbins, weaving shuttles, and other reclaimed found objects on the walls and tabletops. The second queen size bedroom on the second floor is nestled in the 'saltbox' sloped roof of the house with angled ceilings and bead board wall and ceiling paneling, giving this room tons of character and style.

We live nearby and are accessible by the Airbnb app, phone or text during your stay.

This is an up and coming neighborhood of mostly "saltbox" style historic houses originally built for textile mill workers at Olympia and Granby Mills in the late 1800s. Since then, many of these structures have become student rentals but are now quickly being renovated and brought into the 21st century by investors and developers. Like many historic neighborhoods, some of the houses as you enter the block or neighborhood have deferred maintenance. There is even a saltbox house that has had fire damage and sits vacant, but no worries, this neighborhood is completely safe and is within a few minutes walk of the University of South Carolina's Founders Park Baseball Stadium and a 6 minute drive to The Horseshoe on USC's campus. The parking pad can fit 2 vehicles. Parking on the street requires a permit, which we cannot provide to guests. We only provide off-street parking for 2 vehicles!

Car is the dominant mode of transportation in Columbia. Uber and Lyft are great options and there is also a Comet public transportation bus line that stops within a quarter of a mile of the house.

According to Maps, this house is .2 miles to Founders Park/USC Baseball Stadium, 1.4 mile to the Edventure Children's Museum, 1.7 miles to Williams-Brice Stadium/USC Football, 1.8 miles to the USC/Horseshoe & South Carolina Statehouse, 3.7 miles to Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens, 6.9 miles from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, and 7.7 miles from the Ft. Jackson Visitors Center.

Cute little property
We were in town for a competition so we did not spend much time at the house, but everything was easy to find, nicely decorated, and very clean! Also, tbe properly was very close to everything! I would definitely stay again if back in the area.

Needs a Deep Clean
The house was in a good location for our event. The house was a good size but the house was not cleaned. One wall in the living room was covered in dust from ceiling to the sofa, all the art and curtains had thick dust on it. I went our and purchased a spray cleaners so I could clean the coffee and other food debris off the kitchen cabinets. Hopefully after sharing with the host several photos they will deep clean for future guests. Our friends stayed at another rental by the same management company and their house was very clean, so it was probably just lack of anyone checking on this one for an extended period of time.

Overall good, a couple of issues
Overall our stay was good. We had a couple of issues, the first was the sink in the downstairs bathroom was clogged upon our arrival, it was fixed the next day. The second was on the final day of our stay, the downstairs bathroom shower floor had bugs that we had to rinse out before using the shower. We left about an hour after that so we do not know how that was resolved. The property is close to the baseball stadium, it's in a neighborhood that is typical college off campus housing. The location was convenient for us.

Family Weekend
We spent three nights here during SC Family Weekend. While there are many steps to get up to the porch, the ground level bedroom was perfect for my aging parents. Meanwhile, the bedroom with the sloped ceiling was perfect for our teenage daughter. Overall an enjoyable experience very close but not too close to campus. We felt at-home and enjoyed sitting on porch each morning with coffee and unwinding as a group in the living room each evening.
