Sandhill Crane Viewing
The Robertson family were so incredibly kind, accommodating and informed. My daughters and I had the trip of a lifetime. We stayed in the schoolhouse on their horse ranch. Their ranch is built as an old western town. We fell in love with their horses, goats, and donkeys. The Robertson family took my middle daughter and I on a wonderful horseback ride. It had been a number of years since my last ride and I was a bit rusty, they provided us with some of the best riding instruction we had ever received. Additionally, their ranch is only a few miles from the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge where we were able to view the Sandhill Cranes, it was an amazing experience! I cannot recommend the High Plains Drift Inn and the Robertson family highly enough, we will definitely be back!

Great evening
This would be a must on my list for places to stay. Authentic, Genuine, Drop Dead Gorgeous Views and overall great time. The owners are warm welcoming and friendly. I would recommend to anybody looking for an experience in addition to a stay. Beats any hotel, regular home, condo, yawn. This place you won’t forget, talk about to everyone, and long to stay at again.

A Fun Escape from the City!
We stayed in the cabin for one night, preparing for a ride on the Cumbres and Toltec railroad the following day. My sons loved petting the horses and jumping on the trampoline, and I loved the stargazing at night. The family that owns the ranch was very friendly and even though we declined their offer of dinner (I have a lot of food allergies), they gave us hot chocolate and tea. When they heard that we are musicians, they invited us to play on an antique piano that came to Colorado on a covered wagon, so it was really a unique and memorable experience for the kids. A couple of things to be aware of: The cabin is all solar, which is fantastic, but there is no power outlet, just a cute little USB charging station for phones. So, hopefully you're not emotionally attached to your hair dryer. Also, the final leg of our trip was on a bumpy gravel/dirt road, which was totally manageable in our Tesla, but prepare yourself for slow going and a dusty car! Thanks for your hospitality!

Visiting from Texas
When I first booked this trip, I was concern as it only had three reviews. I am very happy that I decided to go for it. My family (kids ages 5 and 9) had the most amazing time at the Inn. It was like you were stepping back in time, everything was very rustic. The kids spent hours with the horses, goats (including newborns), ponies, chickens, and baby bunnies. They also offered horsebackriding and the kids were head over hills! The people there were warm, friendly, hospitable. They treated us like family. We walked away with tons of memories and had the most amazing time. We will definitely come back again and visit the Inn.

I am RV Robertson the head of this gang of Cowboys and desperadoes. I am 73 years old, but mentally I don't think I ever got past 17! I have made my living almost my entire life (except for a time in the military) enjoying people. I have been a fishing and photography guide in the great outdoors and I have raised cattle and trained horses. Throughout my life I have enjoyed being a part of people's vacations and making them feel at home even when away from home.

Over three decades ago I began building the High Plains Drift Inn. My family now share my passion for hospitality and we work together to make sure our guests have a good time and get to feel a little of what it was like in the old west.

You can simply book a cabin with us for a peaceful nights rest on your way through or you can arrange to have full service. Having lived so long I have a story or two for just about everything. If you have the time we can build a fire outside and I can tell you cowboy stories half the night while you roast some marshmallows and listen to my granddaughter play old cowboy songs on the guitar!

When you book please let us know if you are interested in any additional services. We can provide horse riding, skeet shooting, survival classes and our on site Ranch Café serves hearty homestyle cowboy cooking, by reservation.
