Recent guest review...What a wonderful home away from home! Sidney and Margie have a beautiful cottage! It’s modern and new. Margie could double as a home interior designer and Sidney as a top chef baker and master Gardner! We had everything we needed and then some! The place was sparkling clean and bright and airy. The patio area and backyard oasis were wonderful. We enjoyed wine on the private patio several nights during our weeklong stay. We arrived to find wine, homemade cookies, and chocolates in the cottage. We drove and really appreciated the on premise parking space. We drove to many Charleston destinations during our stay but opted to Uber downtown. It was convenient and a little cheaper than paying for downtown parking. You can’t go wrong with The Backyard Cottage! Thank you Sidney and Margie! We’ll be back!

The cottage is equipped for two (2) adults only. Cleanliness and privacy are our top priorities when we travel, that is what you'll find here at The Backyard Cottage. In our backyard you may find us gardening, working on a project or playing with grandchildren. We spend a lot of time on our back porch which you must walk past to get to the cottage, however we cannot see your patio from the porch.

Thank for looking! We hope to see you soon!

A one room studio complete with queen size bed. A restful night’s sleep awaits you with room darkening window treatments along with beddings designed by California Design Den, 100% long staple cotton, OEKO-TEX MADE IN GREEN. The throw blanket and bedspread are light, soft, and cozy. Most IMPORTANT, ALL bedding, from the mattress and pillow protectors to the bedspread are washed and rotated between each guest experience, as are the sofa throw and the EasyGoing sofa cover, including decorative pillows.

In the dresser you will find playing cards and a puzzle. If you forgot yours, a charger for your iPhone is provided, please remember to leave it for the next guest.

USB ports for recharging can be found on each side the bed at the electrical outlet.

Wi-fi and a large screen TCL Roku 50" smart TV.

The kitchenette with quartz countertop offers a refrigerator, dishwasher, dish cloths and soap(s), a microwave, a counter top toaster oven. For those who enjoy outdoors, you will find your own private patio. Coffee, tea, and light snacks are provided during your stay.

In the restroom you will find a stackable washer/dryer, full length mirror, vanity with cultured marble countertop, a walk-in shower with a rainfall shower head, and the essentials…Turkish towels, soap, shampoo, lotion, iron, mini-iron board, Chi blow dryer and detergent pods. Also provided are a broom, dustpan, and a swifter with wet pads for those unforeseen accidents.

The gardens are peaceful and quiet in our backyard and you are invited to enjoy them at your leisure.

Also in our backyard is our workshop, there may be a project going on or they may simply be a retired gent piddling around and me gardening, or you might see us playing with our grandchildren on the swing set or searching for lizards…we will always be respectful of your stay and privacy.

We have a large screened in porch where we spend most of our time, you must walk by it to get to your private space, however we cannot see you, nor you us, from your patio.

A True 'Backyard' Gem
I had a lovely stay and the hosts are wonderful. Checking in with a bottle of wine and fresh homemade cookies greeted me. Everything is spotless and Margie & Sidney have thought of everything. Coffee pods are provided and also little treats in case you need a little something. Margie was quick to respond when I asked for some 'tourist' help on what to do first...and she was spot on. I found the location really close to Charleston and the plantations I wanted to tour and visit. Will definitely be back when I am in the area.

Perfect Backyard Cottage
Our host Sidney & Margie definitely know how to make their cottage feel like a home away from home. The cottage was immaculate, had just what we needed for our weekend away. We enjoyed the little treats left for us. Loved the coziness of the place and the beautiful gardens . The neighborhood is wonderful the Greenway trail is right around the corner. We walked to the stores and restaurants close by. We are definitely looking forward to a trip back to Charleston and already know we will be booking The Backyard Cottage again with the most wonderful host .

Charleston getaway
This property was perfect for my husband and I. It was well stocked with all we needed and more. Only about 10-15 minutes from downtown Charleston we were easily able to get to the things we wanted to do, and then come back and relax and recharge in a quiet neighborhood. Also the host were so helpful in helping us find places to eat and even a restaurant that would show our team that was playing in the women’s NCAA tournament. Thanks to Margie and Sid for this great place so we could enjoy our first trip to Charleston. I highly recommended this place to any couple!

Charleston cottage
Wonderful weekend staying in Charleston for the house and garden tour. Cottage was in West Ashley which was only about 10 -15 minutes from downtown parking garages..it was nice to get away from the crowds at the end of the day! The cottage had everything you would need for your stay. Surrounding neighborhood had great spots for breakfast and dinner if you didnt want to eat in town. The hosts were very responsive, we had a minor issue with tv, and they followed through till it was fixed. We would definitely stay there again.

About the host

Hosted by Sidney & Margie Dudley

Host profile image
Both from the Lowcountry, married for 40 years! In October of 2019 we retired our welding & fabrication shop of 30 plus years after Sidney experienced a massive stroke. Today, he is doing well. We downsized moving from the country to the city, knowing this was the place for us the very first time we viewed the property.

The cottage was just a shell and the grounds overgrown...after 3 years our vision for the property is coming together.

We both enjoy people and being outdoors. Sidney loves the swamplands of the low country as most avid hunters do...a day at the hunting club is always a good day. For Margie, a day at the beach or working in the yard feeds the soul. She is also a realtor who enjoys all things real estate. We enjoy riding our bikes and love that we can begin our journey right out our backdoor.

We love our place and immensely enjoy sharing our treasure and hosting! We welcome you and hope you choose us for your stay, we believe you will be glad you did!

Why they chose this property

We provide an experience, not just a stay...ESCAPE THE Ordinary with us!
Our neighborhood is full of young and older walkers, riders, and parents with strollers. The West Ashley Greenway is literally a five-minute walk from the cottage. Also, Whole Foods Market, Starbucks, Glass Onion, one of our favs (Refined-Southern soul-food eatery), and Swing & Swine are all within a short walk. A little longer walk or bike ride you’ll experience the delightful Avondale community…Pearlz Oyster Bar, Highfalutin Coffee Roasters (best banana nut bread ever…it’s from Wildflour Pastry), Verde (create your own salad in a casual space), Top Rated Charles Towne Fermentory, Triangle Char and Bar (vibrant – burgers, tacos & more), Avondale Wine & Cheese and many more. A little further out you’ll find the St. Andrews Center which houses Harris Teeter along with other merchants. A few of our favorite stops on a bike ride is found at the South Windermere Center…Three Little Birds Café, a cozy café with breakfast or light lunch, always a wait BUT worth it, another of our favs. TCBY (cheery chain for frozen yogurt) and Earth Fare a Health Food Store are just a few of the merchants. And did we mention we are just minutes from the beaches and Historic Downtown Charleston. The airport is about a sixteen-minute drive from the cottage.

What makes this property unique

Our cottage is close to the city, yet far enough to disconnect, unwind and relax.

Our city Favs:
Second State Coffee – 70.5 Beaufain Street – 13 mins (4.6 miles) Minimalist-chic coffee bar with hot & cold drinks, window bar seating, communal tables & Wi-Fi.
The Daily – 652 B King Street - 13 mins (4.5 miles)
A hip coffeehouse with Stumptown brews plus cold pressed juice, beer, breakfast sandwiches & more.
Bowens Island Restaurant – 1870 Bowens Island Rd. - 22 mins (10 miles) A bare-bones fish shack with scenic views. Sunset on the deck is breathtaking. Enduring, counter-serve icon on the waterfront, serving up fresh seafood within graffiti-covered walls. A unique Lowcountry experience serving Charleston since 1946. First come, first serve, no reservations.
Early Bird Diner – 1644 Savannah Hwy. - 5 mins (1.4 miles)
A hopping, offbeat joint for comfort grub served in funky, art-filled digs, with late-night hours on weekends.
Rodney Scott’s BBQ – 1011 King St. - 15 mins (5.6 miles)
Morris Island Light House. Although you can’t actually get to the lighthouse itself without a boat, it’s still a perfect spot to go for a long, peaceful walk along the water. Go to the north end of the island until you reach the cul-de-sac, then park your car and walk 10 minutes until you reach the private beach facing the lighthouse — you’ll be completely saturated in nature, surrounded by only sand and water.
Tour the Charleston Tea Plantation or admire the stunning floral display at Hampton Park. The Angel Oak is one of Charleston’s top attractions and it’s totally free. I recommend spending a full day walking around downtown to visit the historical sites; you’d be surprised how many of them offer free entry. If it’s sweltering hot outside, cool off in the splash fountain at Waterfront Park.
Known to Charleston locals as Botany Bay, is a must-see for those seeking a magnificently preserved stretch of shoreline. It is closed on Tuesdays and better at low tide.
