About this property

Atlantic Ocean Beachfront Duplex with Private Dock

We are back in business. Hurricane Irma paid us an unwelcomed visit September 5,2017 and caused minor damage to the property. We took this time to to give our home a redo. The house has been painted in and out, furniture has been replaced and a beautiful deck has been added along with a private tiki hut. Also a convenient kayak rack was added. This beautiful, duplex home is located on one of the only private beaches in the Florida Keys. The home is located on the southern tip of Long Key, and has a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. Each side of the home is a two-bedroom, one bath. Both sides are available for rent. Other side can be found at VRBO #620321. It is ideal for two families, and a paradise for adults and children.

The Long Key State Park is a short walk up the beach, where camping, birdwatching, snorkeling, hiking, canoeing, and many other activities are offered. The water in front of the home is shallow, with a channel which enables a boat up to 30 feet in length to reach the dock. The shallow water is great for snorkeling, lounging, and is a paradise for children. Boat rentals are available nearby.

The waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay provide some of the best diving and fishing in the world. World-Class fishing guides and dive boats are also available. Many of the local fishing guides will pick you up right in front of the house. The Long Key Viaduct, just a few hundred feet from the house, has proven to be one of the world's best places to catch a Tarpon.

Both sides of the home are fully-equipped with linens, kitchen supplies, patio and beach furniture, a barbecue grill, and a tiki hut provides an escape from the warm Florida sunshine. Come to enjoy some of the many attractions that the area has to offer, or just lay in a hammock under a palm tree. There is something for everyone at this beachfront paradise!

The home is located on the site of Henry Flagler’s Long Key Fishing Camp and it’s where author, Zane Grey vacationed and wrote some of his works in the early 1900s. Long Key Fishing Camp was established on Long Key in Florida in 1908 by Henry M. Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway Company for the use of tourists to enjoy what was described as 'some of the best fishing in the world.' It initially served a housing for some of the employees who were building the Overseas Railroad to Key West.

Long Key Fishing Camp featured a two-story hotel and a number of cottages. The camp was made famous by author Zane Grey, who was a regular resident, and a pioneer of the sport of sail fishing. Grey became the first president of the Long Key Fishing Club in 1917. The list of other early distinguished guests included Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Andrew Mellon, Charles Kettering, and other notables.

The fishing camp was destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, as was the Overseas Railroad. After the latter was destroyed, the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1), was built across Long Key in replacement

Had the best time!
The property is exactly as we had hoped, in fact, it exceeded our expectations. The ocean was warm and clear, we saw sea turtles, manatees and nurse sharks right from the dock. The swimming was excellent, although the current can be strong especially when the tide is in but it’s shallow enough to still get in the water when it’s really moving. Besides the neighbours that were connected to us, we hardly saw another soul. The duplex is set up so that each party has their own amenities, huts and BBQ so even though you’re connected to another group, it doesn’t feel that way. The house itself was a cute beach house with fun beachy decor. We really lucked out renting this place and would love to come back in the future.

Unreal Property, Unreal Week
Stayed at this property right after the new year as my wife and I were on our honeymoon. Words do not do this place justice. An absolutely amazing piece of property. Just steps out of the back door and your toes will be in the sand. Ultra clear water. Kayaks and paddleboards were amazing. Adirondak chairs under the palms. The definition of paradise. We truly cannot tell you how perfect this spot is. Location is great, about 15 min drive down the beautiful Overseas Highway to both Islamorada and Marathon. We will definitely be back! Thank you for hosting us!

fell in love with Long Key in the mid 70's i have been an avid fisherman and diver since I was young and searched for years for a special spot to spend on the water. I keep the boat in front of the house and be tarpon fishing within 5 minutes or I can go fly fishing for bonefish in 1 minute to10 minutes. If I decide I would like to lobstering it will take a 5 minute boat ride to go searching for dinner. The opportunities are endless! Our home sits on the same property as the historic Long key Fishing Camp. See details below.

Why they chose this property

Long Key gained national prominence through its championing by author Zane Grey, who was a regular resident. Someone can check this, but I believe that Grey was America's first millionaire writer. Grey was a dentist who turned cowboy and became a prolific writer. During the winter of 1911, Grey vacationed at Long Key while writing his novel 'The Light of the Western Stars.' King fishing was the popular sport fishing in those times and the sailfish was considered a nuisance as it would steal the bait used for kingfish. In fact, the sailfish was dubbed 'boohoo.'

Zane Grey, along with a local fishing guide named Bill Partrea, would spend their days fishing. It is not known why Grey took to boohoo fishing, but he did, and on light tackle. Year after year, Grey, and his brother R. C, returned to Long Key. With the support of other fishermen, sail fishing became the sport of sports for Florida Keys fishing enthusiasts. There is still a creek on Long Key known as Zane Grey Creek.

Among Long Key amenities were a 75-room guest hotel, general store, a post office and 14 cottages. Normally, a fleet of 12 fishing boats and guides were available. The two-story clubhouse and cottages were on the Atlantic side, but the boats were generally docked on the Gulf side.

Guests arrived by boat or train. A tram passed under the track to connect the two sides. The guest list included Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Andrew Mellon, William Hearst, Charles Kettering, and other notables. Louis P. Schutt was the first manager. When L.P. became the manager of the Casa Marina Hotel in Key West, his son George, took over as manager at Long Key.

The Long Key Fishing Club was officially formed with Zane Grey as the first president from March 1917 to 1920. The stated purpose was, 'To Develop the Best and Finest Traits of Sport, To Restrict the Killing of Fish, To Educate the Inexperienced Angler by Helping Him, And To Promote Good Fellowship
