relaxing Cape experience
Great condo with historic Cape charm. We loved the charm of this home. The outdoor shower was so much fun and perfect after a day at the beach. The fresh cut flowers on the dining table was a sweet touch. It was perfect for our family of 3. Quiet neighborhood, fun walk to a small beach, perfect patio for breakfast. Rick was great at making sure we had what we needed and very responsive to questions. Our daughter said upon leaving that she would miss this sweet little house.

Our Chatham Vacation
This was a very cute house and would recommend it . Awesome neighborhood and It’s so close to Forest Beach. We enjoyed walking there in the morning and evenings. Richard was awesome and helped make our stay easier through our time without power from the tornado!

It was ok...
I think it was OK. Just a short walk to the beach. I have 4 kids so it was a bit small for us. We really needed a table that we could all eat at - there were a couple small pull out tables with fold down leaves but there wasn't enough room to open them up. I would also recommend more plastic bowls for snacks and plastic cups. I think this is a great spot for 4 people.

Cute cottage near the water
This cottage was perfect for our family of four. A queen bed in the master would’ve fit the frame of my husband and me better(we are both 6’ tall), but everything else was perfect! We enjoyed walking to Pleasant beach with our two young boys (ages 3 and 4), grilling in the backyard, and using the outdoor shower after a long day at the beach. Pleasant beach was perfect for the little guys. Also it was a quick drive to nearby bigger beaches, like Nauset and Coast Guard beach. It’s a super quick drive into Chatham as well. We felt close to everything we needed! The cottage was clean and charming. Stocked with enough dishes to cook if you wanted. Lots of beach toys and towels. I highly recommend this place for its location. Rick was very welcoming, helpful, and easy to get in touch with.

Great week with the family!
We loved our stay at this cottage. The cottage had everything we needed for a fun week at the beach including bikes , sand toys, boogie boards. We were 2 adults and 3 kids altogether and had plenty of space. The Central a/c was also a major plus. So comfortable at night and during the day when you need to get out of the heat! The beach was a 2 minute walk away. I definitely recommend this comfy cottage and would come back again in the future. It was perfect. Thanks Rick!!

A great week at the Cape!
We had a wonderful time at the Butler cottage near Forest Sands Beach. The house was exactly as described, and Rick, the owner, was wonderful. He was there to greet us when we arrived and made himself available to address any questions or issues throughout our stay. The location was perfect, just a short 3 minute walk to a nice quiet beach and within a short drive or bike ride to excellent shopping and eating establishments. We enjoyed easy access to the Rail Trail, with miles of paved bike trails. We explored much of the cape during our stay, all the way to Provincetown, and would definitely return to this spot! Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Short Walk to Beautiful Beach, Perfect Chatham Cottage
I stayed with my wife and three sons for one week and it was an amazing vacation. We loved the short walk to Forest Beach, the fire pit and patio, outdoor shower, wi-fi, and the quaint Cape house feel of this awesome home. We will be back!

Sweet little house just like grandma's
We had a lovely stay and were reminded of our childhood family holidays. We had everything we needed (comfy beds, kitchen stuff, back yard, close beach, etc). The kids were fascinated with all the old stuff in the house that they have never seen before. It was like going back in time. Very sweet!

Great Classic Cape
This is the first house I've stayed in (out of 7 in Chatham through the years) that had a good collection of literature. You don't find Dostoevsky, Hemingway and Thoreau on a rental house bookshelf very often. We enjoyed the fact that the owner was very friendly and accessible during the booking process. We also appreciated the fact that linens were provided and the house has a central air unit. The house is in a great location and is obviously tended to with care. Every detail was correct and just as described in the VRBO listing. The interior of the house is classic and interesting in all particulars, and the back yard provides good privacy. If you rent this house, you won't regret it.

Childhood revisited
My husband and I rented this gem for the past week. We booked based on the pictures and reviews, and what I knew was a great location. I spent my childhood summers around the corner where family still resides today. I knew the moment we stepped inside that I had come home. Everything was as described or photographed. The owner was there to greet us and welcome us. We settled in quickly. We were joined for the first two nights by my stepson and his girlfriend. Being ardent foodies, we ate very well and the kitchen was up to the task. We took the liberty of moving the microwave off the counter and hiding it under the kitchen table. No micro cooking for us this week! The table in the family room and the outdoor table set were perfect for indoor or outdoor meals. Coffee in the family room window was great for watching the morning walkers, joggers, and kids of all ages on foot, scooters, or bikes. Reading other reviews, you may hear mention of the friendly fox. He came to the back door to say hello one morning but scampered away quickly as if he wanted to just let us know that he was not the figment of anybody's vacation imagination. Our stay included two beach BBQs, a rainy day in sweat pants watching movies and eating pizza, and a Friday afternoon mini-reunion with family in the back yard. Perfect from beginning to end. This house is well equipped for every adventure. The garage, with a little hunting, yielded beach chairs, bbq equipment, bikes and locks, laundry equipment, and everything else we needed to enjoy our Cape surroundings. It should also be noted that Forest St. Beach at the end of the road, is one of the few in town that does not require a sticker for parking. While it is a very quick walk to the beach, having parking handy was great on the days we bbq'd and needed to get all our equipment to the beach. We have decided that one week was not enough. We're already planning our return for a two week stay next year!

This house is perfect. It belonged to my grandparents & I love the location and area.
I have been to S. Chatham for the summer vacation for about 50 years. As my mother said "Once the sand of Cape Cod gets in your shoes, you are never free of it. You will return. She was right!

Chatham Cape Cod Cottage stay
Great communication from the owner. The cottage was exactly as he described. Liked the location as it was quiet, but still close enough to town. For our group of 3 fishermen, it was just the type of cottage we were looking for. Thank you!

True Cape Cod Home
My family of four recently returned from a week in South Chatham staying in this true Cape Cod home. The listing description and photos are accurate. We loved staying in this quaint cottage. It was like walking back in time, and we loved every minute of it. There were parts of it that reminded me of my grandparent's home when I was a child. The water pressure was fantastic! We often returned from the beach and walked to the back to use the outdoor shower. It is literally one step from the outdoor shower into the house and into the half bath. Getting ready each morning was quick with two bathrooms. The house has everything you need. We easily cooked all meals there because we had everything necessary. The garage has bikes, beach equipment, washer/dryer, etc. You'll want to bring your own bike helmets. The ONLY thing we could find was bike locks. We rode the bikes to Chatham one day. We decided we wanted to do some shopping, but we had no way of securing the bikes. We worried about someone taking them, so we skipped the shopping. The house is located in a very quiet residential area, which we loved. It was such an easy walk to free Forest Beach. The owner is very nice and accommodating. He met us when we arrived, and he called as we were leaving to make sure our stay was wonderful. We had his cell phone if we ever needed him. We are a family of vegetarians. Right down the road was the Box Office Cafe that had a great vegan/vegetarian section on their menu. Our waiter recommended a dessert of macaroons that just came out of the oven. My wife is still talking about that macaroon! It really was good. Overall, I would highly recommend this quaint cottage. One our very last day in the house, I took a walk to the beach. A man and his two children were standing in front of the house looking at it. When he saw me, he said, "This is a true Cape Cod as they are supposed to be. It's very beautiful."

Our stay in Chatham
My wife and I have been staying at various places on Cape Cod for some years. We have been gradually moving further out each year. Our stay here in South Chatham was the best so far. The location was perfect. We were 1/2 block from one beach and two blocks from another. Also a short ride to many other beaches. The quality and quantity of seafood restaurants was tremendous. We're lobster and clam lovers and this area was heaven. The cottage was very charming and comfortable, nicely decorated with antiques, washer and dryer, wireless, TV, etc. As I said before, a great location. The owner is a terrific guy, very helpful. An excellent experience.

Unforgettable first trip to Cape Cod!
We had some work done at our house and needed to go away for a week. We'd never been to Cape Cod before, but decided to give it a try and were lucky to find this place available on such a short notice. We needed a place that was pet-friendly because our cat was coming with us, and then my mother-in-law decided to join us last minute. I wasn't sure if there'd be enough space for all of us and, being a first-time Cape visitor, I had some concerns about the shower being outside. The cottage turned out to be absolutely perfect! We loved the layout of the house; it felt so spacious. The two bedrooms were far enough apart, and the living room (where my mil slept) felt almost like a third bedroom because it was the other side of the kitchen, separated by a door, and had a half-bath right next to it. Having two bathrooms was a big plus for our family of 5. The outdoor shower turned out to be great, and we could get there from three different locations - the living room, the kitchen or the driveway. We loved having so many different ways of getting from one place to another; it was very convenient. The outdoor space was wonderful and we had most of our meals at the patio table, surrounded by nature. Our cat had a great time bird-watching and sleeping in all the beds, armchairs, and other cozy spots she could find. We loved being so close to the beach and being able to bike everywhere. We had a great unplanned vacation at this peaceful and relaxing cottage and would love to come back for a longer visit!

It's Like Coming Home Again by the Sea!
I had discovered Chatham two years ago as a guest and couldn't wait to return to experience its beaches again but we weren't certain where to stay. On the internet, we found this wonderful, homey cottage. When we arrived everything was clean and tidy and all we had to do was head to the beach (which is one of nature's best). I didn't need three-quarters of what I had packed. The owner has thought of everything. The place had ample room with all the amenities of home; from lobster picks to towels & linens, a timer for the steamers, the huge lobster pot, and beach chairs and umbrellas, etc.. The beds were very comfortable and had been made before we arrived. (other places have the guests do the work) We cooked quite a bit (everything was right there for us as the salt air had tired us out) We even did lobsters and steamers that we purchased in Harwich (a few minutes away). However the restuarants closeby and downtown Chatham were excellent.. The owner always returned our calls promptly to answer any of our questions. He was very pleasant and accommodating. So, if you're looking for a place to relax, try this initimate but hardly small, cottage..It's like coming home again. Every photo shown on website is exactly what we saw when we arrived (but even more charming). I look forward to returning to Chatham and returning to this home-away-from-home!

What a wonderful place to experience true Cape Cod!
My family and I have been coming here for years and now that I am older, I love coming with friends. This place is a true Cape house; knotty pine, Yankee decor. Its an easy drive to Chatham and Harwich and a super quick walk to the beach. If you are a bird watcher this place is just for you. Near the beach is a tidal wetland with a ton of wildlife and the house sits on a large chunk of land which it shares with an owl. (there is also a neighborhood fox who keeps to himself but will make an occasional appearence). There is a nice backyard for bbq-ing and relaxing and maybe eating some steamers. In general this is a womderful place to leave your life behind and live like a true Cape Codder.

About the host

Hosted by Rick Butler

Host profile image
For four generations of the Butler family this has been our favorite home. We maintain our seaside cottage with pride, and welcome visitors from all over the world to share its unique character and locale. Originally from New York and New Jersey, we spend our time tending to the Cottage and visiting Cape friends. Rick attended Boston University and Yale, William IV hales from Princeton, and William III was Sheriff of Essex County.

Why they chose this property

For 57 years our family has owned this cottage and enjoyed watching the Cape change and grow. Our grandparents were antique dealers and decorated the house and gardens in traditional Cape style. Now in its fourth generation, our family takes pride in maintaining the house in the comfortable and hospitable style that our grandparents, Mildred and Bill, intended.

What makes this property unique

As children we played horseshoes and 'hide-and-seek' in the deep woods behind the property, and enjoyed biking, sailing, sun-bathing, and visits to the local theaters. We made day-trips to Province town and slept on the porch, now enclosed. The pine-paneled interior is uniquely Cape Cod-style, and our grandparents' collection of antique furniture and hooked rugs, also their Currier and Ives prints gave the place a special meaning to us. The walls now feature the paintings, prints and drawings of Niamh Butler, artist, our 4th generation!
