About this property

Elegant Bayview Victorian Home - Walk to Beach

A unique private estate, rich in history and natural beauty. The home was the residence of Benjamin F. Butler, the colorful Civil War general and Massachusetts governor, still belonging to his descendants. Enjoy fifty-five rolling acres of meadows, forest, marshgrass and rocky granite shoreline, with a white-sand crescent beach, a flat mica beach.
Great space throughout the house. Relax in the originally decorated salon or sit outside and watch the ocean waves roll.

Perfection on Cape Ann
This historic and exquisite house could not have been more perfect for our family . . . many thanks to Polly (the Owner) and her family for being so gracious, welcoming, and wonderful. After visiting Cape Ann for more than 60 years as a family (starting when I was three), this beautiful house and grounds ranks tops on our list, providing everything we could have wanted, from the private beach to the extraordinary Victorian great room, to the privacy afforded by the Ames estate upon which it sits . . . . and views for days. Relaxing and sublime. Looking forward to returning.

Quintessential New England seaside getaway
My family and I loved staying at the Homestead! The house is beautiful and full of antique charm. The beach, just a short walk down the hill, is gorgeous. We swam, snorkeled, and kayaked every day. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Lovely, large house in a beautiful spot
Perfect house for a large family — we had 8 adults and 6 kids / infants, and the house was the perfect size. Amazing private location, beautiful view, could not ask for a better vacation spot

Why they chose this property

This home was built in 1866 by General Benjamin Franklin Butler as his summer residence. It is still owned by his descendants and is now available for rent.

What makes this property unique

With 14 ft ceilings throughout, the main ballroom/living room in this home overlooks the sea and boasts 11 sets of french doors which open out onto to a wraparound front porch with sweeping views of Ipswich bay. Original woodwork throughout. Fireplaces in both the living and dining rooms. We think this is the most relaxing place on earth. You'll never want to leave. The Main house sleeps 12. The Maid's quarters (summer only) (additional charge) sleeps 3-4. Bdrm 1 king, bdrm 2 two twins. Full bath and outdoor shower.
