About this property

Woodpecker Cottage, A Very Special Creekside Retreat is not currently available.

An eclectic piece of 19th century Americana, this 180-year-old cottage sits on the bank of beautiful Potts Creek in Southern Alleghany County. It is located about seven miles north of Paint Bank on state Rt 18, about an hours drive from Roanoke, Lewisburg, and Hot Springs.
The 28-acre property is made up of a few acres of meadows and old timber on the house side of the creek with a steep forested slope rising up Mill Ridge across the stream. The higher terrain backs up to about 140 acres of national forest. The creek tumbles over large boulders in front of the house.
With two bedrooms and ample living space, the cottage is suitable for one or two couples or a family of four or more. A queen, full, and twin bed are in the upstairs bedrooms and a pullout couch is in the den. A large fireplace in the living room adds warmth on cool spring and fall nights. There are water and electric hookups for an RV for additional sleeping capacity. Well behaved pets are welcome, just not on the furniture.
The house is fully self-contained including sheets, towels, linens, kitchenware, and microwave. There is an old stone barbeque pit out back and a large fire pit in the front yard by the creek.
A variety of fish, including trout, can be caught along the banks of the creek and a five minute drive takes you to Steel Bridge Campground, a public stretch of stream regularly stocked by the state.
The quaint village of Paint Bank is 10 minutes away, where you will find casual dining and provisions you may need to stock the cottage during your stay. The owners of the general store, restaurant, and lodging complex also run a herd of buffalo on their farm.
Hunt, fish, hike, read, write, or paint. The Woodpecker Cottage is the perfect place to refresh mind, body, and spirit.
Please note that the cottage is not available from November 30 through April 15. No inquiries from November 30 through January 31 please.

Perfect Getaway!
My husband and I stayed the weekend as our first empty nesters trip. We wanted seclusion and were not disappointed. We never left the cabin! Morning coffee on the porch and afternoon beers by the creek. The cabin was stocked with everything, I mean everything, you could possibly need. Right down to a dog bed. I wish we would have found this little gem years ago. It would have easily become a yearly vacation for us. The only kinks were unannounced visitors. We chose this cabin for the solitude and were a little disappointed to be visited unexpectedly by someone (not sure if it was the owner or property management) "checking on us" and the lawn service.

Great family weekend trip!
My family weekend trip. It was late when we arrived and they had all lights inside and out turned on for us. We were greeted the next day and made welcome. The house has some short doorways and a shower that was a bit difficult for my 6 footers to navigate. We loved tubing down in the creek , making smores over the campfire at night and playing board games. It was so nice as a family to unplug and just be together. It is a very calming and peaceful place to stay. We would recommend it to others.

relaxing and comfortable
My kids loved that you could catch fish in the creek, cook over the fire, and still have a place to read! The beds were extremely comfortable! The house had spacious rooms, plenty of seating, and extra beds. If you wanted to cook, there was almost everything you needed, including a large dinning room table to eat at. We were thankful for our time spent here!

Peaceful country cottage stay.
Great place to get away from it all. Peaceful location with a low key check in and out process, which was appreciated. Enjoyed our short stay and Libby was super helpful with getting us settled in and being available, if needed. Thanks!

We had a wonderful time as always! The place is great, and the owner is wonderful!
This is my favorite vacation spot. The weather was amazing, so we got to enjoy the creek and play lots of yard games. The owner was easy to contact and provided us with firewood and anything else we needed. Thanks for the lovely stay!!
