An eclectic piece of 19th century Americana, this 180-year-old cottage sits on the bank of beautiful Potts Creek in Southern Alleghany County. It is located about seven miles north of Paint Bank on state Rt 18, about an hours drive from Roanoke, Lewisburg, and Hot Springs.
The 28-acre property is made up of a few acres of meadows and old timber on the house side of the creek with a steep forested slope rising up Mill Ridge across the stream. The higher terrain backs up to about 140 acres of national forest. The creek tumbles over large boulders in front of the house.
With two bedrooms and ample living space, the cottage is suitable for one or two couples or a family of four or more. A queen, full, and twin bed are in the upstairs bedrooms and a pullout couch is in the den. A large fireplace in the living room adds warmth on cool spring and fall nights. There are water and electric hookups for an RV for additional sleeping capacity. Well behaved pets are welcome, just not on the furniture.
The house is fully self-contained including sheets, towels, linens, kitchenware, and microwave. There is an old stone barbeque pit out back and a large fire pit in the front yard by the creek.
A variety of fish, including trout, can be caught along the banks of the creek and a five minute drive takes you to Steel Bridge Campground, a public stretch of stream regularly stocked by the state.
The quaint village of Paint Bank is 10 minutes away, where you will find casual dining and provisions you may need to stock the cottage during your stay. The owners of the general store, restaurant, and lodging complex also run a herd of buffalo on their farm.
Hunt, fish, hike, read, write, or paint. The Woodpecker Cottage is the perfect place to refresh mind, body, and spirit.
Please note that the cottage is not available from November 30 through April 15. No inquiries from November 30 through January 31 please.
