About this property

Oasis by the Santa Fe River - 4 Blocks to Historic Plaza; 1 Block to Canyon Road

Casa Tierra is a unique historic adobe in a superb location: 4 blocks from the Santa Fe Plaza and 1 block off art-studded Canyon Road. This 2 bedroom/2 bath casita is tucked back from the Santa Fe River; the 6 minute stroll to the center of town is along shady sidewalks and seasonally flowing water.

This authentic adobe is hand-mudded in the ancient ways of native peoples. It is this rare and lovely hand-applied earthen surface that lends the house its name, Casa Tierra - House from the Earth. Casa Tierra is one of only six all-adobe, all-mudded homes remaining today in Santa Fe.

Upon entering Casa Tierra, you are greeted by a great room with high viga-beam ceilings, herringbone brick floors, fireplace, and museum quality art and antiques. The living room opens onto a granite topped kitchen with five burner stove. Both bedrooms offer a king or two-twin-beds sleeping option (new beds!) and each has its own joyfully tiled Talavera bath. Handmade doors, furnishings, carvings and woodwork throughout offer a rustic Old World ambiance.
Casa Tierra opens out onto four private and inviting sitting areas beneath venerable Cedar and Cypress trees--perfect for communing with friends or simply relaxing and enjoying time alone. This is truly an Oasis by the Santa Fe River.

Great Place in Santa Fe
We stayed for 5 nights at this lovely adobe in Santa Fe. It was the perfect location for walking to both Canyon Road and the Plaza area. The guest house was clean and comfortable. Noel and Peter were great and helpful. They shared with us their favorite restaurants and things to do in the area. We would stay here again our next time in Santa Fe.

Love Casa Tierra
This was our fourth stay at this property; we love it. Great location, has everything we need. Easy walk or drive to everything. Cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. I hate to give it a great rating because that makes it harder to reserve... but fantastic all around.

Great house; great location
Lovely and comfortable Santa Fe style house with everything we needed. The location was convenient to walk to the Plaza & Canyon Rd & numerous good restaurants. A bonus was the walking path outside the house along the Santa Fe River. Everyday we commented to each other how fortunate we were to enjoy such a wonderful place! Definitely will return!

About the host

Hosted by NOËL BENNETT

Host profile image
The owner, NOËL BENNETT, has lived most of her life in the Southwest. After graduating from Stanford University, she lived with the Navajo for eight years and authored nine books on Navajo weaving, history and culture. She continues to write and paint from her studios in Santa Fe and in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico.

Why they chose this property

While living in Santa Fe for ten years, in the heat of the summer NOEL would walk her Komondor dog along the Santa Fe river. Always the shady paths and trickling water were refreshing and revitalizing---a stark reminder that water in the Great Southwest is sacred.
One day she noticed that the two hand-mudded adobe homes along the river--a home and guest home that had always fascinated her--were for sale! There was no doubt that the location was unbeatable. Once inside, she found the earthiness, solar absorption, and quietness of the authentic adobe to be also irresistible. Since then she and her husband, "SIR DOKTOR" RUSSELL BETTS (International Environmentalist) have worked to remodel the homes to bring them into today's living standards--ever mindful of maintaining their original ambiance.

What makes this property unique

But there is more! What struck NOËL especially was how clearly the homes manifested Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural style. First there is his signature honey-comb 120 degree angles so reflecting the way humans most comfortably function within architectural spaces. Second, there is his hallmark "continuous space" in which architecture is wielded to blur the line between humans and nature. Having herself grown up in California in a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, plus having lived with the Navajo for eight years, plus having previously lived in a double-walled adobe, the unique combination of styles and materials ("Imagine! A 'Frank Lloyd Wright Adobe!') immediately felt like home.
Over the years, NOËL has pieced together the fascinating history of these homes. Specifically they were HAND-built in the 1950s by Harry Pierson, an Economic Anthropologist/Columbia University Professor and co-author of "Trade and Market in the Early Empires."
But fact finding continues: They have yet to find out how much of a hand Frank Lloyd Wright--or more likely one of his Taliesin West apprentices--might have played in creating the dual sense of coziness and expansiveness inherent in this oasis along the Santa Fe River.
