My partner and I loved our stay at Huckleberry Cabin. It was such a magical, peaceful place to unwind. Hot tub was clean, bed was comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed. Beyond all the things you’d expect in a good rental, there were so many extra details that illustrate the creativity, love, and care of the hosts. I hope to go back soon!
The property is beautiful, quiet and full of wonderful little touches that make it feel special. The gnome trail walk was a lot of fun and a great way to explore the property. Hot tub was relaxing and in a very private space. We had breakfast in the back under a cedar tree, and spend time in the evening on on the porch swing with our tea. We will definitely be back.
Such a cozy cabin in a beautiful, peaceful setting. We had a wonderful weekend on Harstine Island. The cabin was just right—warm, comfortable, and well set up for a relaxing stay. We’d happily return.
This was a wonderful, peaceful, and beautiful place to stay! The hosts were amazing and very kind. Everything was very clean. The property was beautiful and the trails were so cute! Thank you for a wonderful stay! Hope to be back again sometime
We loved our stay at Ruth and Scott’s cabin! The cabin itself was cozy and warm, perfect for huddling up together on a chilly winter night, and very thoughtfully stocked with some delicious scones. The hosts also provided some very useful directions on accessing the more out-of-the way park on the island, which provided a perfect short hike with our dogs. The dogs themselves enjoyed all the trails around the property with plenty to sniff, and we were tickled with the gnome trail. We’d love to go back again!
Such a great stay at the Huckleberry Cabin! So cozy, clean, and comfortable. Great amenities - really appreciated the cooktop, pots and pans, fridge with freezer, and 4-cup coffee maker complete with regular and decaf coffee. Made it easy to make easy meals - the frozen skillet meals were so easy with this set up. The Queen bed was comfortable and bedroom was nice and private with a door separating the living area. The hot tub was an added bonus and just a quick walk from the cabin (the hot tub is behind the owner’s garage, but completely private and they don’t use it while guests are staying). We had fresh snow, but we were still able to enjoy some of the trails (the gnome trail was our favorite). The resident kitty, Timber, was such a sweetheart and greeted us upon arrival. I had to work remotely one day and the internet worked well. Not much around for food, so highly recommend grocery shopping on your way in. The Spencer Lake Bar and Grill was good and had nice views of the lake. Thank you, Ruth and Scott!
I feel like the hosts thought of everything! All the little touches were so sweet - a blanket on the swinging bench, flips flops for the hot tub, maps, cozy blankets. The cabin is lovely and private and the property is beautiful. We loved seeing the woods and the creek and the cats. Can’t wait to return in a more sunny season too! Such a good jumping off point for many adventures in the area. We will be back!
Such a lovely peaceful space to stay in! Hot tub is huge and yard to well separated from the main house for privacy. Host was so very nice and brought us homemade huckleberry bread upon arrival that was hot out of the oven.
Peaceful little cabin in the woods. Comfortable and cozy. We were in the area for an event and were so delighted with our stay, we hope to return again when we have more time to enjoy the area.
Everything about the stay was amazing. Directions to the cabin were perfect, they left some really yummy huckleberry bread for us, the instructions for the hot tub were perfect. Ruth and Scott gave us plenty of privacy, but responded to our messages and texts promptly! The cabin itself was super cozy… we watched movies (even got the DVD player working!), had romantic meals by the fireplace, played some games, went out to explore the island and nearby yarn store, and walked around the property looking at the fruiting mushrooms. If I could stay forever I would. Thanks again you two!!

About the host
Hosted by Ruth Nisco and Scott Lowry
We’re Scott and Ruth—creators, explorers, and lovers of the simple joys found in nature. Life on Harstine Island is our dream come true, and we’re excited to share a slice of it with you.
Scott is a true Pacific Northwest native and a proud UW grad. After a long career at Boeing (with a few adventures as a firefighter, scuba diver, and arguably the best barista you’ll ever meet), he’s now happiest blazing new trails through the forest or cheering on his beloved Seahawks.
Ruth was born in Hawaii and has lived on both coasts, but it’s here in the mossy woods of Harstine Island that she feels most inspired. A recent graduate in graphic design, she finds creativity everywhere—in the trees, the garden, and the peaceful rhythm of island life.
Together, we’ve poured our hearts into creating a homestead that celebrates nature, simplicity, and beauty. Hosting guests in our cozy forest cabin is one of our favorite parts of island life. Whether you're here to unwind, explore, or just listen to the rain on the cedars, we hope you’ll feel welcomed and restored.
Why they chose this property
We were drawn to Harstine Island for its quiet beauty, towering trees, and the sense of peace that’s hard to find anywhere else. The forest feels alive here—full of birdsong, winding trails, and the salty breeze from nearby Puget Sound. It’s a place where time slows down, and nature takes the lead.
This part of the South Sound offers the perfect mix of seclusion and connection. We love being surrounded by wildlife, with eagles overhead and deer passing through, yet still close enough to explore charming towns, state parks, and the breathtaking beauty of the Olympic Peninsula.
Harstine Island has a truly special spirit, and we knew right away it was where we wanted to build a home, create, and welcome others to experience its magic.
What makes this property unique
Escape the stress of the big city and step into a lush, green island paradise where mossy ferns and towering cedar, maple, and hemlock trees create a magical forest setting. Nestled on Harstine Island, our cozy cabin sits on a peaceful homestead bursting with wild huckleberries, blooming gardens, and meandering trails perfect for exploring with your family—including horses, dogs, and our friendly cat.
Just a short walk away, the beach along Puget Sound invites you to fish, clam, or simply watch the tides change while surrounded by local wildlife—deer, birds, and curious creatures that make this place feel truly enchanted. After a day of hiking nearby state parks, boating, or visiting farmers markets, relax in one of our outdoor hammocks or by the firepit, sharing stories over a campfire or a BBQ dinner.
Inside, you’ll find a clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully organized cabin filled with unique artwork and handcrafted woodwork that adds warmth and charm to your stay. Stay connected with WiFi, Dish TV, and Netflix, or unplug entirely—either way, the quiet serenity of the island welcomes you.
Families love our kid-friendly touches, including games, a treehouse, and whimsical gnomes and fairies tucked throughout the property. Plus, we’re pet-friendly, so your furry friends can share in the adventure.
Conveniently located just a bridge away from the mainland and within easy reach of Seattle and Portland, our retreat offers the perfect blend of peaceful island living and access to exciting local attractions like casinos, boating, canoeing, and hiking.
Whether you’re here for quiet reflection, outdoor fun, or quality time with loved ones, our cabin on Harstine Island is a unique and enchanting getaway you won’t forget.
