Mayhew Farms Cottage - Breathtaking Mt. Views Overlooking Pond & Horses

Located on a 200+ year old farm at the foot of the majestic Peaks of Otter, this cottage is perfect for a countryside getaway. Enjoy porch swinging from our newly, custom built pergola while enjoying panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and overlooking our large 3 acre pond. Horse Lover? You’ll love looking over our horse pasture towards our large pond where catch and release fishing is allowed! Are you an avid hunter? This would be your dream spot to stay. We have a walk-in game cooler, meat processing area and deer skinning shed available on-site. Minutes away from the National Forest.

We are conveniently located 15 minutes from the town of Bedford, 10 minutes to the Peaks of Otter Lodge and Campgrounds, 30 minutes to Lynchburg and Liberty University, 45 minutes to Roanoke, 30 minutes to Smith Mountain Lake. We are 5 minutes from the Peaks of Otter Winery and 10 minutes from Gross’s Orchard - both worth exploring for a true sense of this area. The town of Bedford is home to the National D-Day Memorial and is bursting with lots of quality Arts & Antiques in our quaint downtown area. Other day trips worth the visit include Appomattox where the Civil War ended, Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, Monticello at UVA, Natural Bridge of VA, Train Museum and Taubman Art Museum in Roanoke and Liberty Mountain’s Snowflex Centre.

Lovely stay. We were pleasantly surprised at the beautiful property and views. We were thrilled with our greeter, Buck, the handsome and friendly horse. The view of the vibrantly colored trees, mountains, pastures and ponds was peaceful and enjoyable. The cottage was clean, warm and cozy and comfortable and quaint. It just felt "right" for being a foothill cottage, on a beauty property. Also, we enjoyed coffee on the pergola - wonderful! The property was conveniently located to Peaks of Otter and the Glass Hill Venue, as well as Lynchburg. The hostess, Sarah, was very responsive and helpful and sweet. We also enjoyed our easy conversation with Tony. We will definitely return for a visit to explore more of the area and to fish. Ha

Back again!! Always our go-to place, Matthew farms is a breath of fresh air. Always calm, always peaceful and it’s always the perfect get away for us whenever we’re in this area. The host are very friendly, easily contactable and even come and chat with you if you happen to be enjoying the patio & gazebo swing! The cottage has everything that you need with a fully stocked kitchen, upgraded towels & linens and the most comfortable king sized bed I have ever slept in!! This is our go to place whenever we are in the Lynchburg area. We have stayed too many times to count now. This house has a well stocked kitchen with all the items necessary to prepare meals, bake cookies or even a cake! The beds are comfortable and the bedrooms have plenty of blankets. During the summer months, it can be humid when it’s really hot outside but the a/c units do make it comfortable, especially at night. The property is very calm and relaxing and you are free to stroll. The owners are very accommodating and accessible!! Highly recommend this cottage!!

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE

WE STAYED FOR A LONG WEEKEND AND TO ENJOY A VIRGINIA DARE CRUISE. THIS HOME WAS ABOUT A 40 MINUTE DRIVE FROM THEN LAKE BUT THE COUNTRYSIDE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL THAT IT DIDN'T MATTER. The property and location is very peaceful. The cottage is a rather eclectic space but beautifully outfitted. The host was very responsive and there were the extras of flowers on the table and fresh baked cookies upon arrival.It's a little further from liberty Univ than we first thought but it is convenient to hiking at Flattop and the D day memorial...which we did all three.

My father-in-law purchased this farm in 1978 where he and wife, Margaret raised my husband and his brother. Margaret and Tony still reside in the large farmhouse which is located just a short distance from the property. My husband, myself and our three children live “over the pond and through the woods” from the cottage. As the more tech savvy one between the two of us, I manage the online reservations while Tony typically enjoys being hands-on with anything that’s needed during your stay. Feel free to contact either of us! We always love to get to know our visitors!

Why they chose this property

The farm was once a full working dairy farm, dating over 200 years old. Up until last year, we have rented this cottage as a long-term rental. We are pleased to now offer the cottage as short-term rental where visitors to the area can enjoy a home such as ours.

What makes this property unique

The peacefulness that our property brings is something you can't find many other places. As you swing under our pergola or sit around the fire pit and listen to the sounds around you, one can imagine what the farm would have looked like so many years ago. We are a history lover's dream!
