About this property

Kanien'kehá:ka Roundhouse - Unique Cordwood Home - A Nature Lovers' Retreat

Rural, serene & secluded 'Living in the Round' with eclectic, Beatles-themed décor. Unique cordwood Roundhouse with private swimming pool & cabana. 7 acres of private forest with wildlife. Ideal for 3 couples or a close family of 6 who want a quiet getaway. Nearby historic & lively Village of Merrickville has Rideau River Canal Locks, gift shops, art galleries, cafés, restaurants & pubs, patios, and live music. Canada's Capital City of Ottawa is only 50 minutes away.

SLEEPING ACCOMMODATION
The house can sleep up to 6 people in *3 bedrooms: 2 guests on 1 queen in the master bedroom; 2 guests on 1 double in the guest bedroom, and 2 guests on 1 queen in the *3rd bedroom which is a 'SEASONAL' BUNKIE (only available May through September). Note: the BUNKIE bedroom is ONLY AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST and does not have heat or a washroom, but it is just 12 steps from the main house entrance.

MUCH MORE THAN A "COTTAGE"!
Although many people refer to my house as a 'cottage', it is my principal residence, and therefore, my home and castle - nestled within my little slice of paradise! My home is named "Kanien'kehá:ka Roundhouse", which reflects my Mohawk heritage. The house is a unique, energy-efficient, round-shaped house of 'stackwall/cordwood masonry' construction.

Despite my home’s relatively small, yet cozy, open-concept living space, it features many 'creature comforts'; such as pinewood floors, wood-burning fireplace in a sunken livingroom, central heating & air-conditioning, ceiling fans, fully-equipped modern kitchen with island, ensuite soaker bathtub & large shower stall, unlimited WiFi internet, 58" satellite Roku TV, Blu-Ray DVD player and a Super Stereo Sound System which reverberates 'around the round'. The eclectic décor can best be described as 'Cool Rock Star Chic' and even "muzium-like", which reflects my varied life experiences & passions, particularly for The Beatles.

The well-water in the house is treated with a UV Water Softener system which makes the water potable. It is regularly tested by the local health department.

For OUTDOOR LIVING, there is an ON-GROUND (UNHEATED) SWIMMING POOL, (note: open late May-late Sep), with cedar cabana & (yoga) sun deck; propane BBQ and a Caribbean-themed screened-in pinewood gazebo for 'bug-free' outdoor dining and lounging.

It's an 'Out of This World' experience! In the spring of 2017, my Roundhouse was used as a 'set' for a home on the planet Mars, in an award-winning independent Sci-Fi feature film, entitled "Blue Skies on Mars", which was released in the summer of 2018 and is available to view on Amazon Prime.

EXCLUSIVE ACCESS: Guests have EXCLUSIVE access to the ENTIRE property, which includes the Roundhouse, bunkie, gazebo, swimming pool & 7-acre property - it is NOT SHARED with the owner or any other guests during your stay.

CHECK-IN PROCEDURE: There is NO 'SELF CHECK-IN'. You will be met & greeted by your host, in person, who will provide you with a 20-minute orientation tour of the property's features and amenities. At that time, you will be given your own personal electronic keypad access code to use during your stay.

GUEST PRICING: Quoted nightly rate is for 2 people. Extra guests, to a maximum of 4 others, is an additional $15 per person, per night. When booking, please be sure to accurately state the number of adults and children (under 13 years of age). Once your booking is accepted, you will be REQUIRED TO SUBMIT FULL NAMES of everyone in your group, in your booking messaging to the host. No 'surprise/unregistered' guests or pets, please!

PRIVACY: Your privacy is guaranteed. There are no interior or exterior surveillance cameras in operation during your stay.

NO PETS ALLOWED. Regardless of how 'well-behaved' they are, pets, particularly dogs, are not permitted for the very simple reason that they can inherently, by their nature, interfere with the peaceful environment enjoyed by the abundant wildlife which is resident on the property, even when leashed.

TOILETRIES: Toilet tissue is provided. Although, a selection of hygiene travel samples are also provided, guests may want to bring their own shampoo, conditioner & shower soap, (no 'anti-bacterial' soaps, please, as such products are not septic tank-friendly!).

BEDLINEN & TOWELS: All bedlinen, blankets, pillows are provided. Bath, Shower & Pool towels are also provided.

INTERNET SPEED: Although unlimited WiFi is available and adequate for average household use, the internet speed in this rural area can fluctuate and service can sometimes be unreliable. If you need to conduct important online work, business or Zoom calls during your stay, internet service may prove frustrating at times.

WILDLIFE ALERT! It is not unusual to be visited by wildlife, (field mice, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits/hares, groundhogs, skunks, raccoons, turtles, snakes, grouse, wild turkeys, many songbirds and even deer!). We respectfully ask that you DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS because that would interfere with their routine natural feeding habits.

MOSQUITO ALERT! Bring insect repellent, especially in the months of May & June.

TICK WARNING! As the property is rural, all guests must be aware of the possibility of encountering ticks. Please research prevention methods.

CLEANLINESS & TIDINESS: I have a very low 'cleaning fee' due to the fact that most of the nearly 600 guests I have hosted in the last 10 years have left my home so clean & tidy that its as if they had never been here! Some have even left gifts in appreciation of how much effort & pride I take in presenting such a clean, tidy & orderly home for their visit. To those SUPERGUESTS, a sincere, heartfelt "Nyá:wen" (thank you), for caring for my home so well. For your efforts, you will always be welcome to return... to clean my home again!

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD:
The Roundhouse is located 9 km east of Merrickville, 15 km west of Kemptville and 2.8 kms south of the primary arterial county road which runs between Merrickville & Kemptville, on a rural, well-maintained secondary road. There are several secluded homes on large wooded lots on the approach. A neighbouring private stable frequently exercises their horses along the road. A nearby railway line features the occasional 'mournful' signal horn of a passing freight train.

GETTING AROUND:
A car is essential if you want to visit nearby villages, towns and attractions. There is no public transportation, taxis or Uber. The village of Merrickville is 9 km west of the Roundhouse and the town of Kemptville is 17 km (16 min) east. Smiths Falls is 26 km (27 min), Historic Perth is 47 km (44 min.), and Parliament Hill, in the nation's capital city of Ottawa, is just a quick 50 min. drive north via Hwy 416.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

About the host

Host profile image
She'kon! (Hello!)

I am a Mohawk Canadian who was born in the United Kingdom. My Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother & Great Great Grandmother all hailed from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in Eastern Ontario, Canada. My father was French-Canadian. My daughter is Danish. My 'significant others' have been English, Scottish, Dutch, Danish, German, Swiss & Polish. My current partner is of Anishinaabe heritage.

I have lived in 10 countries & areas, (England, Canada, United States, The Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Turkey, France, Southern Africa & Southeast Asia), and I have experienced life, at length, in another 45 countries. After 30 years of living abroad, I resettled in Canada in 2006.

"Don't Dream It, Be It!" has always been my life motto. So, I became, in this order, a world traveller; a travel agent & guide; a radio broadcaster; a rock singer & bass guitarist; a father; an English teacher; a professional yachtsman; a beach bum; an alpine ski & snowboard guide and a music school manager.

These days, I'm retired & yet revitalized - and focussed on making your stay in my home a memorable one. So, please come to my 'little slice of paradise', (which was found after 30 years of nomadic global wandering), and be one of my "Super-Guests"!

Niá:wen! (thank you)

Why they chose this property

I have always sought to live in unusual accommodations, in unusual places. When I was born, I lived in a tudor-style house in England. I once lived in an 18th century coach-house and later, in a converted windmill, (which, of course, was round), in The Netherlands. I have lived in French chalets at 2000 meters above sea level. At sea level, I have lived on a variety of sailing yachts for 6 years in Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Spain, Italy and when I sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean. My friends are not surprised that I now live in "The Roundhouse".

What makes this property unique

The greatest benefit of living in this area is being surrounded by the serenity and quiet which allows one to actually experience nature and wildlife intimately. And then, moments away, is a busy little village with craft stores, restaurants, cafes, patios, artists/artisans & musicians. The best of both worlds!
