About this property

Romantic Holiday Cottage, Kington, Nr Hay On Wye, Welsh Borders Wales

Blodeuwedd Cottage is located on a single track no-through road and on the edge of the attractive and thriving market town of Kington, a 'Border Town' in the Welsh Marches. It’s only 10 minutes walk to local shops, deli, tourist info, post office, takeaways, restaurants, pubs etc. The cottage is named after Blodeuwedd (meaning 'Flower Face'), a beautiful woman who was cursed and turned into an owl in one of the stories belonging to the Mabinogion, a famous collection of old Welsh legends.

The cottage is several hundred years old and is one half of a traditional Welsh long-house. One can see how the central circular fireplace has been divided in two, probably a hundred years ago or more. Both the lounge and front bedroom have lots of exposed beams and many of the walls downstairs are natural local stone.

The cottage is wonderfully romantic for a couple and quite magical for children and therefore also ideally suited for families. We also regularly let to walkers and cyclists. The property is full of character with lots of period features. Charming living room with exposed beams and wood burning stove. Bright kitchen, spacious garden and terrace with BBQ. Fitted with all mod cons such as individually adjustable heating in all rooms, DVD player, Sky TV, internet, fully equipped kitchen, washing machine etc.

Use of local guide books and maps are complimentary during your stay.

Romantic things to do in the area:
Watch the sunset go down over the Welsh Mountains from the top of the Whimble. Or walk across Hergest Ridge, both listening to ‘Hergest Ridge’ by Mike Oldfield on your iPods and take a break at the bench under the Monkey Puzzle trees to admire the views. Or have a pint of real ale in the Olde Tavern in Kington. Or walk along the Fairy Path and visit the 30m high waterfall ‘Water-Break-Its-Neck’. Or ride ponies through the Black Mountains. Or have a picnic in a cider orchard. Or take afternoon tea on the veranda at Hergest Croft Gardens. Or paddle a canoe down the river Wye. Or visit the heart-shaped waterfall above Hafod. Or watch the Red Kites soaring above Radnorshire Forest. Or have morning coffee with a beautiful slice of cake at the historic Thomas Shop in Penybont. Or share an adrenaline rush by taking part in extreme sports at the Black Mountain Adventure Centre including zip wires, canyoning and abseiling.

Walking, Cycling, Riding:
The cottage is on the Offa’s Dyke walking path and close to the Wye Valley Walk, Glyndwr’s Walk and Mortimer’s Trail Longmynd, Stipperstones and Wenlock Edge are an easy drive to the Northeast, to the South are the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons and the West the Radnorshire Forest, Elan Valley, Hafod and Plynlimon. The opportunities for short circular walks to strenuous distances across remote countryside are some of the best in Britain. For mountain biking, there is a fantastic off-road trail through the Elan Valley, enormous numbers of bridleways across the open moorland in the area and hundreds of miles of forest tracks. Bicycle hire can be arranged. We can give you details of riding schools offering pony trekking through the mountains and indoor riding. Stabling can be arranged. The weather conditions are varied across the area, so with a bit of planning one can usually find somewhere good to go every day, even during unsettled weather periods. Great game and carp fishing nearby and shooting.
