To describe Sandhill Cottage as characterful simply does not do this gem of a property justice. The property dates back four centuries and every room exudes historical artefacts. The carpentry - especially in the kitchen and witnessed in the exposed beams is something to behold and guests will feel like they have stepped back in time.
Sandhill cottage sleeps six people in three double bedrooms which are all to be found upstairs along with the family shower room. The living quarters are all on the ground floor and all lead off the spacious hallway with plenty of room to hang up coats and take off the muddy boots after a long day walking the High Weald AONB which is easily accessible from the cottage. The suit of armour in the living room, along with the large open fire (operational between Oct and April) provides the perfect, cosy spot to relax with a glass of wine in the cool autumn and winter months.
From 18th September 2023 guests can enjoy the hot tub and in the spring and summer months, the tennis court. The extensive accessible grounds also have woodland, pasture and a number of ponds which make it a beautiful spot to explore.
There is ample parking at the front of the cottage for two cars and the driveway is accessed through large security gates.
Sandhill Cottage is located down a country lane with numerous walks and footpaths from the front door. It's only a ten minute walk into the village of Crawley Down which has a number of pubs, shops and restaurants. Crawley Down is situated in the northeast corner of West Sussex close to the borders of Surrey and Kent. It's handy for the M23 motorway and only about a ten minute drive from Gatwick Airport, Three Bridges and East Grinstead railway stations which helps make it a perfect spot for small, family get-togethers.
The cottage is also ideally situated to visit the National Trust properties of Standen, Sheffield Park, Nymans Gardens and Polesdon Lacy. Just 4 miles South of Crawley Down is Wakehurst Place which is also owned by the National Trust but run and maintained by the Royal Botanical Society along with Kew Gardens. Other nearby attractions include the Bluebell Railway, Ashdown Forest famous for Winnie the Pooh and friends and in Crawley are Tilgate Park and Buchan Park. To the North West are Wisley Gardens and the theme parks of Legoland, Chessington and Thorpe Park.
The reservoirs at Ardingly and Weirwood are both close by. Weirwood has good facilities for sailing and fishing and Ardingly also can offer rowing.
Please note: -The main, adjoining house may be occupied from time to time and the tennis court is shared with this house, while some of the garden is for private use by the house. -There are ponds in the grounds of the property and children should therefore be supervised at all times. -Children should also be supervised at all times when using the hot tub -The hot tub will be available for use from 18th September 2023. The pool in the grounds is not available for use. -Strictly no smoking anywhere in or outside of the property. -CCTV is in use at the exterior of the property, only in non-private areas -Please contact Finest Retreats for any other information.

Great stay in a perfect Sussex farm house.
The property was as the photos described and it was an absolutely stunning location. The suit of armour was really cool! Despite the suggestions below we would definitely come and stay again, the whole place was really relaxing and comfortable and felt like being in an episode of Jonathan Creek.

Lovely, different and cosy
Lovely, different and cosy.
Unfortunately there is hornets nesting and camping in the house. Not a host issue, just something that needs tending to!

Perfect place to catch a break.
Our group had a wonderful stay in this property. A beautiful historical house, cosy kitchen and fireplace to play board games in front of (or watch the rugby instead). Corner store was easily walkable, so too the local pub (we recommend the Crown).

Beautiful historic cottage with plenty of space for the kids to run around.
We loved this old, Tudor cottage. It was perfect for our family holiday. Our family loved the history. Pool and huge gardens for the kids to play in. Great kitchen.

Idyllic Cottage in Sussex
Loved the fact that you were at the end of a private road and away from the business of life, quaint 500 yr old cottage. Beautiful surroundings and the perfect place to spend time with family. the open fireplace was the best on the cold evenings

Absolutely beautiful 500 years old cottage, surrounded by huge grounds. We saw baby deer, a fox, lots of birds and a badger, ejoyed the hot tub and marveled at the ancient wooden structure around us. very special place! highly recommend!
Carpet flooring will always creep me out and the living room could use some tlc but it was an absolutely amazing stay!

lovely quiet and relaxing place in a good location
The location and the character of the property.
Considering that the property could accommodate up to 6 people the fact that there was only one toilet/bathroom was disappointing.

Beautiful house, beautiful location.
Beautiful old real english house, the location was great and quiet. Nice hot tub.
The beds were very small and you slept in a pit. The kitchen was sparsely furnished, no towels and tea towels available. There was only a toilet in the bathroom.

Sandhill Cottage with hot tub
The kitchen is great and the cottage is charming
There was no internet service as advertised. (The router may need replacing). There was no hot water the last day and a half of our stay. There is also a wasp nest on the house, so whenever a window was opened, wasps flew in. There should be a local tradesman who can be called for repairs during a renter’s stay.

A beautiful cottage in idyllic location.
The location was wonderful at the end of a long lane. The cottage along with the owners house sit beautifully behind a set of gates. The cottage looks lovely with exposed beams throughout and the gardens are wonderful
The kitchen appliances I.e hob and oven and the cupboards are beginning to show their age. only one hob was working as we had no matches for the others. A number of the spotlights in the kitchen ( installed above the beams) were not working making the kitchen very dark in places, and inside cupboards. A mirror in the bedrooms would help as struggled to do hair and makeup getting ready to go to a wedding.

Lovely, cosy Christmas stay in a historic cottage with the kids. Exactly what we needed! Thank you!
The cottage was gorgeous, clean and cosy, and as expected. They had a Christmas tree and cute fairy lights which created a festive atmosphere and had kindly left a couple of streaming services signed in to the TV so we could watch stuff. The hot tub was superb and the grounds were at our disposal, although we didn't end up using them. Didn't have any run-ins with the hosts, and felt very at home and welcome to roam around. Even though the cottage is from the 14th century it has been modernised, with central heating and hot water always on, which was great as we had kids with us. Great to have a washer/dryer too. Excellent location, 15 min walk to a Co-op and Waitrose, and a lovely coffee shop, very near a train station and nice trails around. The village is super cute too and was wonderfully lit for Christmas. Good enough communication before arrival, although I had to follow up a couple of times for a few things. It was through an agent, who had to keep going back to the owner, which probably added a bit of a delay. But the agent was lovely and helpful. Great value for money for the amount of people and time of year - definitely a gem.

We had a great time and enjoyed staying in the house, some minor improvements could be made
House was lovely in a great location, we had a really lovely time as a group
Pool was winterised, despite online check-in information stating that the heating was off (ie inferring that the pool was still accessible). Some of the bedding had what appeared to be blood stains. The mattress in one of the rooms was lopsided, leading to a poor nights sleep for those in there. Pots and pans were quite dirty and required deep cleaning before use. The gate also broke and left us stuck inside the property for an hour when we wanted to head out - whilst this is no one’s fault the contact on phone said “this happens a lot”, which begs the question why it hasn’t been fixed.
This house has lots of character. It was a fun way to end our stay in the UK. Reasonably well appointed, including all basics except a vacuum cleaner and mixing bowls. Roomy kitchen. The Nespresso machine is a nice perk, although we couldn't figure out where to buy more coffee pods.
The pool was heated, but really too cold to spend much time in, even in June. The tennis court needs some attention and probably shouldn't be shown in the ad. One minor complaint is that I kept slamming my head on the low doors upstairs. I'm 6'1". This was not an issue for anyone else though.
A bigger issue is that the washer-dryer apparently has a clogged condenser and won't dry clothes (this seems to be a problem with these dual function machines).
Internet worked fine.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay in Crawley Down and would stay here again.
