Carrauntoohil is Ireland’s highest mountain and at 1,038.6 metres is located on the Iveragh Peninsula, close to the centre of Ireland's highest mountain range, MacGillycuddy's Reeks.
The area surrounding Killorglin is very scenic and there are a number marked walks and cycling trails in the area, bicycle hire is available in the town.
The local municipal library in Killorglin is home to the works of the Irish artist Pauline Bewick. There is a weekly country market featuring local produce and a large public playground.Things to See & Do in the Local AreaThere are several sandy beaches within 15 km of our holiday accommodation in Killorglin. Dooks Beach is the closest sandy beach, a 15-minute drive away. A lovely sheltered beach just 3 miles from Glenbeigh village off the Ring of Kerry Road. Close by is Rossbeigh Strand on the Iveragh Peninsula and on the other side of the bay is Inch Strand on the Dingle Peninsula. Rossbeigh Strand is such a perfect place to ride horses that it's home to the annual Glenbeigh Racing Festival every August. Inch Strand is a 5km long sand spit jutting into the sea between the outer Dingle Bay and inner Castlemaine Harbour overlooking magnificent Iveragh and Dingle Peninsulas.
Beside Dooks Beach there is a very well regarded 18-hole golf course called Dook's Links Course. From here golfers will be treated to spectacular views of the Dingle Peninsula, Cromane and Inch beach.
From Killorglin you are ideally situated for touring the much-loved and colourful towns of Dingle, Killarney and Kenmare. Killarney is situated on the shores of Lough Leane and is a popular stop on the Ring of Kerry scenic drive, and the start and finishing point of the 200-km Kerry Way walking trail. Across the bridge from St. Mary's Cathedral into Killarney National Park and visit the beautiful Victorian mansion Muckross House, Gardens & Traditional Farm. Killarney National Park is the first national park in Ireland, created when Muckross Estate was donated to the Irish Free State in 1932. Within Killarney National Park’s 10,000-hectare limits are trails through forests, moorland and to landmarks like Torc Waterfall and Torc Mountain.
For an unforgettable experience drive the Ring of Kerry, a 179km-long scenic drive passing through rural seaside villages on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Plan ahead and visit Skellig Michael, a rocky island with an abandoned 7th-century Christian monastery. In the summer months boats leave from Portmagee making the 12km crossing, sure to be a memorable adventure.
