Dalwhinnie Cottage, Killegray Ridge, Bald Head Island, North Carolina, is a bright, airy, whimsical, three story lantern oceanfront beach house facing South Beach with direct beach access by boardwalk to the ocean and reversed living area on the second floor which offers spectacular views of the ocean.
The ocean views from this cottage are incredible - on a clear day you can see forever. The cottage has over 50 windows and glass doors, offering views from every vantage point which are ever changing with the sun, clouds, rain, fog and wind. From the windows flanking the East side of the cottage is a view of the point of Cape Fear with the waves on East Beach falling on the Cape, and beyond onto the Frying Pan Shoals.
Directly in front of the house is South Beach w/the clear vista of the ocean with dolphins frolicking and pelicans diving for fish, waves lapping towards the front of the cottage and ships on the horizon entering Cape Fear River. Sunrise can be enjoyed on the east side of the cottage from all 4 bedrooms; sunsets from the oceanfront exposure of the cottage during fall, winter & spring months, as well as from the tall windows flanking the west side of the house, and most certainly, from the third floor west windows during summer months. Views do not end at sunset. We have no smog or city lights to hide the moon, stars, even the space station!
Environment: Dalwhinnie is the last cottage in Killegray Ridge on the ocean, immediately next to Braemar within sight of Cape Fear. A boardwalk extends directly from the oceanfront porch of Dalwhinnie to the beach access. The location affords privacy to its guests - living exposures focus on the ocean and the uncrowded beaches. The street entrance to the house is on a cul de sac off of South Beach Wynd.
The extensive boardwalk system in front of Dalwhinnie extends west thru Killegray Ridge into Flora’s Bluff - perfect for walking and play. There are 14 miles of beaches, never crowded, waiting for you to step onto, directly in front of Dalwhinnie. South Beach begins at the Point of Cape Fear and ends at the west end of the island where the ocean meets the Cape Fear River.
Dalwhinnie is the perfect place for families with children or four couples, for families renting multiple houses for weddings or reunions or for a quiet get away for one couple. Each master suite -first floor king bedroom and crofter - offer privacy. A queen sized sleeper sofa is on the second floor with half-bath access. All four bedrooms have a private bath.
Floor plan: First Floor includes nine-foot ceilings with foyer; Master Bedroom with King size bed and private bathroom faces the ocean with direct access to the oceanfront rocking chair porch; a second bedroom with 2 double beds & private bathroom has direct access to the screened porch.
Second Floor is the reverse living floor, it has high vaulted, beamed, 14-foot ceilings and hosts the living-dining-kitchen area with an oceanfront deck facing the ocean (South Beach) and a 2nd deck off the dining room faces east towards the point of Cape Fear and frying pan shoals. This deck has dining table and 4 chairs. The kitchen and dining room are located on the second floor floor as well. The second floor sports 17 windows and doors, allowing for our guests to enjoy the ocean without stepping outside.
Third Floor is our whimsical lantern room with vaulted ceiling which includes two twin beds which can be converted to a king, Windows surround the lantern room, facing east, south, and west; and bathroom facing north.
Crofter has 14-foot vaulted ceiling with view of South Beach from window over bed and from deck.
Housekeeping and Maintenance: Dalwhinnie is owned and managed by its owners, and is cared for by the same housekeeper and houseman every week. The cottage is cleaned for your arrival. Linens and supplies are included, as are beach towels. Kitchen supplies including paper towels, coffee filters, dishwasher soap, sponge/tuffy, plastic bags, are all provided. Maintenance issues when guests are in residence are taken care of by island providers. Dalwhinnie has an HVAC contractor under contract to provide emergency service when needed. Monthly maintenance is performed on our golf carts. Pest control services are provided quarterly and as needed. Dalwhinnie has clear lexan hurricane shutters, and an island contractor who installs them when a hurricane is forecast.
Refurbishment: In 2006, major refurbishment! New windows, doors, refinished floors, new carpet, appliances, blinds, even hot water heaters and HVAC systems are new. 2005 and 2006, new mattresses. Painted inside and out - Dalwhinnie is glistening! In 2010 we replaced our roof, and refurbished our screened in porch. In 2012 we made upgrades to our kitchen to include granite counters, stainless steel sink, garbage disposal. In 2016, we placed a 6 seater Club Car in service. in 2020 we replaced our dishwasher and washer/dryer. All of the boardwalks and stairs at Dalwhinnie have been replaced in the last 3 years.
The entirety of South Beach at Bald Head Island was renourished Spring 2021.

Outstanding home/location on the best part of the island. Nicely appointed. Fully stocked kitchen. Splendid host. Have stayed at several places at BHI over the last 20 years & this is the favorite hands down!

A great house in a great location with beautiful views. The owner has the house well-stocked with all necessary amenities. Reverse floor plan is perfect for ocean views and relaxing in the evenings. Would definitely stay here again. Great communication - washer broke and was replaced the following morning.
Our stay was great. The house is beautiful, with close access to the beach. Paddie, the host, was amazing to work with and was great to communicate with. There are plenty of beach chairs and everything one needs for the stay. I would highly recommend this property.

A great cottage on a great island. Just beautiful and relaxing. Owners are accomodating and easy to work with. Can't wait for next visit!!!
Perfect location and beach access. House layout was great with four bedrooms including the crofter. Clean and nice kitchen and bathrooms; two golf carts made it great for a group to split up and have flexibility.Appreciate the two bikes which were in good conduction and ready to ride. Plenty of beach chairs. Nice multiple decks.
We had a fantastic time! The weather wasn’t exactly “beach”, however Dalwhinnie/Flora’s Bluff was the perfect place for relaxation and rest. The house’s layout gave our family together time and space for downtime. We are looking forward to another stay!
Location was just amazing with the boardwalk directly to the beach from the back porch. The home was a so beautiful! Beds were nice and comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked. Bathrooms didn’t have any toiletries except a bar of soap which did surprise me a little at the price point. But the stay was very comfortable and the golf carts were so fun!! We hope to come back again!

Thank you for this nice review. Our oceanfront location, within steps of the new beach access, is amazing. We look forward to your return! Glad you found our beds comfortable and the kitchen well stocked. We suspended leaving personal toiletries out in 2020 due to COVID, instead provide soft soap, bar soap,TP & cleaning products. In our kitchen we provide paper towels, trash bags, coffee filters, sponges, DW soap, dish soap, Brita filters, and cleaning products. We also provide laundry soap and dryer sheets.
The description was spot on! Lovely views of the ocean. Paddi’s instructions were perfect. Communication prior to our trip was excellent. She was very responsive to questions upon arrival and made sure all was in proper order. Dalwhinnie was a perfect set up for our family. Looking forward to coming back.
We have been regular visitors to BHI for 30 years, and this may be the nicest house we have stayed in. Definitely, now our favorite! The second floor living area is spacious and comfortable, with panoramic views of the dunes and the ocean beyond, and two porches to sit on for morning coffee and lunch. You can hear the waves crashing in the distance. The house is a ways away from South Beach Wynd, so no road noises, and surrounded on two sides by dense foliage. It's in a small cluster of houses, but it was a very quiet neighborhood while we were there. Beach access is direct via a boardwalk from the downstairs porch. The rooms are all comfortable, including the crofter which our son enjoyed using, and the surprising large third story room (with high ceilings, and a bathroom) that our daughter claimed as the "eagle's nest." There was more than enough room for everybody, for our family of four. Oh, and there was lots of beach equipment, unusually well organized and in good condition. One thing to be aware of: since the house is on three levels there are stairs to negotiate on a regular basis (i.e., from bedrooms to living area), and that might be an issue for some. Of note, the owner responded within minutes to any questions we had, before and during our stay. Her availability was much appreciated. I hope we can come back to this house next year.
The owner was extremely helpful and instructive. This was our first time on the island. She prepped us well in advance for what to bring and all of the many wonderful intricacies of life on the island. The house was just incredible.

This is our second time staying at Dalwhinnie Cottage. The house has amazing ocean views and is very clean and well equipped. The beach is beautiful! What makes this property unique
Dalwhinnie is located at the end of Killegray Ridge next to Braemar. The oceanfront lot in Braemar is not developed. We are at the end of an L cul de sac. Only two of the five properties in our cul de sac rent to guests. The cul de sac is a wonderful place for children to play. The cottage is as peaceful as our guests want it to be.
