About this property
Spacious Beautiful Home with Soul, Close to DC Sights, Easy Walk to Metro
Enjoy this custom-built home in a charming neighborhood within easy walking distance to the Takoma Metro. There is something special about this house, its spaciousness, its open layout - it invites good times and a relaxing place to be after a day in the city.
The house is wonderful; all the rooms are very large, with hardwood floors, high ceilings and lots of light. The huge kitchen with island and open breakfast room is easily the center of the home. Everyone loves to gather here. Right off the kitchen is the family room with French doors that take you out to a deck, where you can sit under 200 year old oak trees. This room has the TV, which you can also see from the kitchen. The gracious, separate dining room and inviting living room give everyone a place to spread out or to gather and entertain.
The primary bedroom with king-size bed has an adjoining, all-windowed office that has been turned into a separate smaller 4th bedroom. It now holds a cot, a foldout-small couch, and a pack -n play/crib. The two-room bath has the largest jacuzzi tub you've ever seen. The other two bedrooms offer restful spaciousness, with queen-sized beds, reading nooks and plenty of closet space. They share a recently remodeled bathroom at the end of the hall.
This house would be perfect for one family; extended family; 3 couples, or two families with children. Montgomery County has placed a limit of 6 adults, and up to 5 children.
Enjoy coffee on the front porch, or barbecuing on the back deck, or lounging in front of the TV. The openness of the house makes it an easy place to cook and share great meals, relax, and enjoy each other's company.
All amenities are provided, including: linens, fully equipped kitchen, flat-screen TVs, comfortable furniture on the front porch and back deck, w/d, central air. Guests have access to all parts of the home except the basement.

We are on a quiet street, near two parks and just two blocks from the heart of Old Town Takoma. It's a less than 10 minute walk up the street to the center of town, which has several great restaurants and fun shops. There's everything you need to make your trip enjoyable and easy. The celebrated Takoma Farmers Market is on Sundays.
Go two more blocks from the center of town to catch the Takoma Metro. A straight walk from the house takes 15 minutes. If you'd rather drive up, there is a large parking lot at the station. The Metro train ride to the beautiful Union Station is just 10 minutes. You can be at the White House, the Mall or the National Gallery in less than 25 minutes.
There is a very nice couple living downstairs in an apartment the ground floor. Please be considerate of noise. We have assured them that guests will be especially quiet between 10pm and 9am. Thank you!
Please park in the gravelly area at the side of the house, just near the side door, where there is room for 2 cars. If you have more than 2 cars, you must park any others down on Westmoreland Avenue. Please do not ever park on First Street. If you have visitors, please tell them this.
If you are using the washing machine, please don't load it too full. It seems to want to stop mid-cycle if loaded more than about 2/3 full.
We are not allowing any parties or gatherings at the house. If you have any guests at all over to the house, please let us know, and please be sure to let them know about the parking and the apartment in the basement.
Please also let us know if you are planning on bringing a pet. The charge is $50/stay/pet.
Please leave the house in the condition you found it. Empty the garbage/trash in the kitchen and take to the garbage cans that are outside the mudroom door in the pen to the left. There are also bins for recycling outside.
NoN need to strip the sheets from the beds, just make sure we can tell which ones were used. Please leave all used towels in one big pile in the laundry room. If you can start a load of wash for us, we would REALLY appreciate it --- especially if we have guests checking in the same day that you leave! Thank you!
We hope you enjoy the house as much as we do when we are there. Our neighbors are quiet and respectful, and we hope to keep everyone happy about having a short-term rental in the neighborhood!
We do have live TV, but not full on cable; and both of our TVs can stream HULU, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

About the host
Hosted by Susan DeBonis

I spent many years living in Washington DC working on national campaigns for child safety, sustainable agriculture, and fair trade. When I met my forester/activist husband, he was headed back to Oregon. So we made a compromise more than 20 years ago: We would move to Hood River, but keep our DC house, with the plan that we would spend half our time on each coast. Years of raising our son kept us centered in Oregon. But now that he's grown, we are able to spend time on both coasts again. I love the Pacific Northwest, but I also have always loved our special house and neighborhood in Takoma Park. Sharing our homes allows us to indulge my bi-coastal, country-city loyalties.
Why they chose this property
I love the neighborhood. We are just two blocks away from the center of Takoma Park. It's a very pleasant walk to downtown/old town Takoma, where you will find a delightful assortment of restaurants, small shops, and conveniences. A mainstay of the town is the Sunday Farmer's Market. It's a sure place to run into someone you know.
The Takoma Metro can get you to Union Station in 10 minutes, Dupont Circle in 20. If you want to get to the Washington Mall, you can transfer and be there in about 35-40 minutes.
The neighborhood has a lot of charm. It has houses of many sizes, from post-war bungalows, to early 1900s farmhouses, to refurbished Victorians. Gardens are eclectic and neighbors are interesting and easy-going.
Our house sits on a quiet street, with many long-time neighbors. We've seen our children grow up, we know each other's pets. We shovel snow together when DC gets the big storms and then hole up in one of our houses to enjoy the stopping of time until the snow melts. Through the warmer months, we love our front porch where we can look out onto the street, but also enjoy privacy because we are perched up high.

What makes this property unique
I'm excited to share our home with you. I bought this house when I was young and single, and paid the mortgage by having housemates. We had a great time and many of us are still close friends today. With all the housemates, and all the friends visiting, and all the short-term stays, many people have enjoyed our home's welcome embrace. It sounds crazy, but you will know what I mean once you get there.
The rooms in the house are very large, and the ceilings are high - so it has a very spacious feel. There are plenty of spaces to spread out, to enjoy being together or to take some time for yourself.
The furniture in the house is not fancy, but it is all comfortable. It's got an eclectic style, with lots of color and original artwork. We pride ourselves on the simplicity and lack of clutter, and calm mood we've created.
The front porch is really special. And the back deck is nice and private with a small wooded area to look into.
