About this property
Bargain on Blue Ridge
Enjoy incredible comfort and location at The Pad on the Hill, and at a price that can’t be beat. Located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the house is minutes from the village of Blowing Rock, Tweetsie Railroad, Cone Manor, Grandfather Mountain, and Appalachian State University. The charm of the mountains are all nearby with many hiking trails. Try a tasting at one of the local wineries or breweries, or just enjoy your own happy hour at The Pad!
Built in 1962, our home in the High Country has been authentically restored to the days when this house was new and the North Carolina mountains were becoming the new destination place for leisure.
The house features a spacious gathering place - living room, dining room and kitchen. Open the double front doors and your space is extended out onto the large stone patio where one can relax and take in the cool mountain air. In rainy weather, outdoor seating is provided under the tall covered porch, features a unique ceiling fan, charcoal grill and exterior security camera protection.
There is seating for 6 under the Sputnik light at the original octagonal dining table and also 4 stools belly up to the bar at the kitchen island. We were happy to find 3 of the 4 period kitchen appliances function at full capacity, but replaced the entire sink/faucet/dishwasher area and eventually the refrigerator for ease and function. You will find fully stocked cabinets for cooking and dining.
Our home features a large wood burning fireplace, homey hearth and bookcases displaying 1960s items of our childhood we were happy to bring out of storage for display! The games were ones we grew up playing. Explore the small touches, historic photos, and authentic furnishings - such as the Grand Server coffee table which debuted at the 1963 NYC World's Fair! Stay connected with WiFi and a 65 inch HDTV flat screen with cable, Roku and a sound bar you can connect to with Bluetooth to enhance your tunes. You will enjoy a comfortable climate with the new central heat and air conditioning. There is also a washer/dryer available for your convenience.
Down the hall are 3 bedrooms. The master has a mod queen bed and private newly remodeled full bath with walk in shower. The other 2 bedrooms have a queen bed and a full bed and share the "atomic cool" hall bath with tub/shower.
When you have filled your lungs with the fresh air and just can't relax anymore, there are so many activities waiting for you within a short drive...the house is located near mm288 just off the Blue Ridge Parkway between Boone and Blowing Rock...take a leisurely cruise on the Parkway in search of the perfect hiking trail, wade in the cool water of a Price Lake stream, take the 1 mile scenic (and flat) walk around Bass Lake then marvel at the high quality crafts at the Cone Manor. No trip to the highlands is complete without a drive to the top of Grandfather Mountain to traverse across the Mile High Swinging Bridge. Not much further down the road is Linville Caverns and Falls. And if you have the young ones with you, Tweetsie is a must...you can hear the whistle blow from the house! After fun filled days come home to the comfort of your retreat high on the hill.
The atmosphere and furnishings of this home exudes charm. It is a cool reprieve from the heat of summer and it wraps you in warmth during the cool months. The high ceilings and beautiful wood wall paneling complete the picture perfect mountain home. We promise, you will never want to leave...but you can always come back again!

About the host
Hosted by Kathy Phillips
Bob is a native North Carolinian and Kathy transplanted from Pennsylvania long enough ago (1968) to claim NC as home. We live and work in Raleigh, but love all that this state has to offer. We escape in either direction - to the mountains and to the coast (check out our Ocracoke listing #1585907) every chance we can, but with two kids to put through college it's not often enough. So, until the day when we are free to move about the country, we would like to share our home away from home with like minded folks who appreciate taking time to relax and rejuvenate.
Why they chose this property
Bob's family has a summer home on the same hill and he grew up coming here. So when this house became available we took the plunge. We loved the retro, 1960s vibe and the challenge of bringing the past back to life.
What makes this property unique
Whether you are cozy on the couch, warming up around the fire, or lounging on the patio, you will enjoy a change of pace in these hills. Our place is one that gives people time to gain new perspectives and appreciate the nature around you.
