For the traveller seeking a more authentic experience of Hawai`i is Hale Makani Kai, "home of the gentle ocean breeze." Ideally located for experiencing the unique beauty and culture of true Hawai`i, this home is found on the "beautiful side of the island” where the lush green mountains meet the crystal blue Pacific Ocean.

This comfortable upstairs rural home offers you the simplicity of island living without sacrificing modern convenience. After a swim in the ocean, relax on your deck where you can watch honu (sea turtles) taking a break at the surface, something you won't find on more crowded sides of the island! If you're lucky, you'll even get a chance to catch whales breaching out beyond the reef at the right time of year. Become entranced while watching the coconut trees swaying in the ocean breeze, perfectly framing your view of the ocean from the deck or living room - like something out of a postcard! Behind you, the Ko’olau mountain range rises into the sky, covered in a lush, green junglescape, where wild boar, peacocks, and birds live freely and mountain streams run untouched. The tranquil setting of this gem of a home truly removes you from the outside world, giving your spirit a place of solace to reconnect and be renewed.

When you’ve rejuvenated and are ready to venture out, you’ll find no shortage of unique local places to eat, uncrowded beaches to visit, and island shopping to explore. Two of the top ten world famous places to visit on O'ahu, The Polynesian Cultural Center (www.polynesia.com) and Kualoa Ranch (www.kualoa.com) are just minutes away. Lifetime memories are waiting to be made at these two truly unforgettable attractions, amongst others, just down the road from the home.

When you stay with us, not only do you get a more local experience, but you also are supporting local. We are kama’āina - a local family dedicated to caring for and sharing this special place we call home. We are honored to be able to introduce you to our unique island culture and lifestyle. Most of all, we are committed to sharing the true meaning of ALOHA with you, so that your Hawaii experience will be an unforgettable one for you and your `ohana (family). We've raised our family in this home, and while our children are now grown and on other parts of the island, this home has remained in the family, and we are honored to share its specialness with visitors in hopes that they will be able to experience an authentic piece of this truly unforgettable place. We look forward to welcoming you!

About the host

Host profile image
I have lived on the island for over 40 years. Providing personal care to my guests to make sure they have a memorable Hawaiian vacation is my top priority. My two children grew up here, spending their childhood playing on the beach and swimming in the ocean at the back yard of this property. We are available to provide you with local knowledge, and to ensure that you have a great stay.

This beautiful country environment is reflected in my paintings. You can see some of my artwork at Lancefairly.com.

Why they chose this property

We have lived here since 1987, Hauula is where one can feel aloha (love from the heart). People are genuine. Neighbors always watch out for each other. The bonds are so tight. My dog, Abel, used to walk the beach freely (when there was no need for a leash), everyone knew him. Abel is in heaven now and we miss him.

When we moved here, our neighborhood boys, Dane and Drew delivered us cookies. My children became close friends with Drew who always took care of them. We never had to worry if they were with Drew. This is the kind of neighborhood we have. Drew now has his own family and still bring his family to visit his old neighbors once in a while.

What makes this property unique

This is a basic rural home, nothing fancy. One time a guest commented, " So peaceful. Looking out into mountains and the ocean, listening to the sound of the wave put you back with nature. It rejuvinates your soul."
