Peaceful Island home with sweeping views of Cape Breton Highlands National Park
This historic Acadian home is perched on a hill on Cheticamp Island, with hay fields leading down to the harbour and sunny views from every window. Recently renovated, the house features a very well equipped kitchen, a wood stove, laundry room, high speed WiFi, cable TV, games and puzzles and many books. The attached garage is filled with a fleet of bikes of all sizes, kayaks, small boats, a ping pong table, a barbecue, and much more- all for your enjoyment. Watch the incredible stars while toasting marshmallows around the firepit- we have lots of wood. The house provides a private retreat for a couple, or a happy vacation for an entire family. We love children, and responsible dogs.....both can run free to their hearts' content, and everyone will enjoy our delicious island spring water from the new well! An historic Acadian house on the outside, the Blue House is nicely renovated on the inside for comfort and simple elegance. Rest in the total island quiet in the three bedrooms upstairs- two double beds and a queen, and a double fold out couch on the living room downstairs. A full bath upstairs and a lavoratory down. New hardwood floors brighten the sunny living room whose windows look out on the harbour and the mountains. All ready for you to move in- everything included!
An Acadian house with a story! This farmhouse was originally located at Cap Rouge in the National Park! When the Park was established in 1940 and the Acadians had to leave, this house's owners brought it (floated it!) to Cheticamp Island- and it almost did not make it. But it has been very happily settled on acres and acres of hay fields and forest ever since. The Island Light Road is a dirt road that runs along the harbour of Cheticamp Island, from the nice warm, sand beach along the causeway that leads to the island all the way to the Point Enrage lighthouse at the north end of the island. With no traffic it a great road for walking and for biking. Trails from the back of the house lead to the headland capes on the the 'back of the island'- 150 foot cliffs over the Gulf of St Lawrence. Whales, seals, and eagles of several kinds to watch for, and many blueberries to pick on the way.

A huge thank you to Gretxhen for this beautiful stay, what a magnificent place, Gretchen is a fantastic person, who shared her knowledge and love for the region with us. We loved the house, which has a beautiful history and had everything we needed. Thank you again!
The house is comfortably and creatively furnished, with all the amenities you might expect (and then some). The location is stunning, and is very close to the entrance of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The island itself has plenty of interest, with scenic roads to walk or bike on, a lovely beach. We will definitely be back!

so pleased that you enjoyed our house! Come back soon!
We had a great time in Cheticamp at the Blue House. Here are the best features: lots of room for the dogs to run in the fields, great location, house has everything you would need, clean, comfortable beds, and a great vibe. A few weaknesses: the house is a bit cluttered and needs some TLC. However, we would come back again.
Superbe endroit très calme. Gretchen répond à toutes les questions rapidement et avec enthousiasme. À 15 minutes de l’entrée du parc du Cap-Breton, situation idéale.

Beautiful location but needs some TLC
The "brave" Blue House has a lot of history. It has withstood hurricanes and relocation which involved being partially submerged in the harbor during the process. It's in a beautiful location, very private and set back from the road and has views of Cheticamp and the water. In addition, it's a short drive to the Highlands National Park.
The main thing we found lacking was the housekeeping. My family and I agreed that the house could use a thorough spring cleaning. We're not all that fussy, but we noticed it needed some work. The house is also in need of some general maintenance.
We never met Gretchen face-to-face, but all of our interactions with her were cordial and pleasant. She also was very generous. She offers her kayaks and bikes for her guests' use. In addition, the kitchen was well stocked.
The home was as advertised and Gretchen was wonderful. She met us as we arrived with a bouquet of flowers. She reviewed the property, how to reach her in case we needed anything, and then left us be to explore.
We will definitely be going back!!
Absolutely as advertised! Great Location with incredible views! Charming, plenty of room for the 7 of us and has everything you need! Gretchen was a wonderful host!

Great location with amazing views but not a great vacation overall!
Positive review for the rental and the host but negative review for our vacation overall. We really liked this property and the host was amazing. Prior to arriving, she installed an air conditioning unit which was essential given that Nova Scotia was in the midst of a heat wave! She also checked in with us on several occasions to make sure we didn't need anything. Unfortunately, our car broke down on the way to Cheticamp and had to be towed to Halifax. Then, one of our family members tested positive for COVID early on in the week and passed it on to both my husband and I. Therefore, our vacation started bad and ended bad!
This was our second visit to the Blue House and it was just as good as the 1st. Our dog loved running in the open fields. Enjoyed the privacy and the new deck.
A house with lots of character in a wonderful location
We had great time at the blue house. We explored the island on foot, by bike and kayak. Evenings were spent playing table tennis in the garage or by the fire pit. Conveniently located next to Cheticamp for groceries and the park for walking. We could have happily stayed much longer.

A lovely spot
It was nice to return to the Blue House for the second summer in a row. It truly is a lovely spot. Quiet, with lots of room to roam, wonderful views and access to one of the best beaches in Nova Scotia and the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The only small problem was the wifi stopped working on the third day we were there. Something reset and the password no longer worked. I did call and email about it, but never heard back. It certainly wasn't an emergency, but it did mean that I used more of my data than usual, costing me a bit. Also, the house could use a real deep clean (cobwebs, smudged cupboard doors, dust bunnies in the corners, but the kitchen and bathroom fixtures were nice and clean.). There are several bikes in the garage, but they all need repairing in order to work! It's a great spot to visit from and also to just hang out in, but needs a bit more attention.
We were two families staying here with two children aged 3 years old and one aged 7 months old. The toddlers played for hours on end. Their imaginations ran wild! The view is spectacular, especially at night. We had a bonfire almost every night and enjoyed the deck first thing in the morning everyday. Cheticamp Beach is so close and is sandy and wonderful. "Downtown" Cheticamp is only minutes away, as is the National Park (go do some hiking!). The house was comfortable and cozy for us. We would highly recommend this place. Thanks Gretchen!
A beautiful house with an incredible story, overlooking the peaceful harbor. We had a wonderful stay and enjoyed the comfortable feel of the home, including a well stocked kitchen and great selection of books. Gretchen was a very welcoming host who shared her knowledge of the area. An excellent location for exploring the town of Cheticamp as well as many stellar nearby hiking trails. Thank you!
Nous avons beaucoup appréciés notre séjour. Le chalet est charmant et équipé avec tout ce que nous avions besoin pour passer de belle vacance. Les chiens ont adoré pouvoir courir dans les champs.
Million dollar views so a bargain at this price! Minutes from National Park entrance and close to town for supplies but complete solitude on Cheticamp Island. Animal lovers will enjoy the cows grazing in the nearby pastures.
Host Gretchen is awesome and a wealth of local knowledge. Helped launch her dinghy but only wished I had more time to row in the harbor right at the end of the driveway.
Water in the Gulf is not horribly cold for being so far north and makes for comfortable swimming.
Can’t wait to come back soon!

Beautiful, remote location with views of the harbor and Cheticamp. Very private area.
We loved this little blue house on Cheticamp Island. Small, quaint old Acadian home with lots of history. Small kitchen and living area downstairs with 1/2 bath, three bedrooms and full bath upstairs. Loads of windows to open to the island breezes, I think we had all windows open one night and it was glorious! Be warned, the stairs are steep and make a 90 degree turn, take your time going up and down. ( this was normal for us, our old farmhouse has 2 sets of stairs like these😁). We enjoyed eating breakfasts on the deck looking over the harbor, drove the island road out to the lighthouse and saw the wandering herd of random cows, played ping pong in the garage and napped/slept on the hammock. If only the blueberries had been ripe.....we didn’t attempt the kayaks as they were much larger than we are used to and the walk down and then back up the lane with the yaks seemed daunting, plus we haven’t kayaked much on open water so didn’t trust our skills in the harbor tides. Had lots of fun driving into and hiking the national park less than 1/2 hour away and listening to some sweet Celtic music at a pub in town. Be sure to drive down the coast to Inverness beach and eat at the Red Shoe Pub in Mabou, hike the Skyline Trail at least once in your life, and find a whale watch tour. Enjoy the atmosphere and just sit and relax if you can. Gretchen was a great host who took care of everything we needed for our stay and my only regrets are that we couldn’t stay longer and that she had to return to Maine before we met in person! If I ever get the chance to stay in the “ little blue house” again, I certainly will. Thanks Gretchen, for sharing with us!

Highly recommended!
This house on the island is a treasure. It is equipped with everything anyone could want for a week. Whatever you forgot to bring - it's already here, probably in large quantity. There are a dozen bikes in various sizes for exploring the island roads. (And do explore them. The ends of the island are wonderful places to ramble, especially at sunset.) There are so many games, sports equipment, activities in the garage that you'll never exhaust them. The bookshelves are crammed with gorgeous photo books of the area and lots of interesting reading. The view across the water to the town and the Highlands beyond is lovely and constantly changing with the light. Water access at the end of the lane makes it easy to kayak in the shelter of the harbor - but be forewarned that outside of the harbor mouth the wind ceaselessly blows and makes for challenging kayaking. We loved the hiking in the park, had the inevitable moose encounter, saw waterfalls and barrens and carnivorous plants and stunning vistas and the largest fern field I've ever seen. Mountain biking is limited in the park to a few trails, but outside the park, exploration yields many possibilities. There's also a biking rail-trail along the coast southward.
Gretchen gave us a history of the house which is amazing and made our stay there that much richer. She lives nearby and is very responsive but never intrusive. She was a wealth of information about the area and any activities we might have in mind.
We were largely untroubled by mosquitos or other biting bugs, had comfortable nighttime sleeping weather with a cool breeze blowing through. The stars at night - so many! - away from city lights. The quietness, day or night - exquisite. Snowshoe hares hopped around the lawn, a hawk perched in the evergreens outside the dining room window. The Blue House is a wonderful vacation choice.

Wonderfully Equipped, Sunny Vacation Home🤗
Our party of 4 adults, our 12 year old son & dog had a fabulous week @ The Blue House August 2014. Cheticamp Island is quite unique in having both a small bay for easy watercraft enjoyment, & an expansive sand beach on open ocean for swimming & sunbathing. The cycling and hiking on the Island also rate highly. Gretchen is a fabulous host & so knowledgable about the physical, marine, social & historical dimensions of the area. Cheticamp proper is a traditionalAcadian village with a distinct, vibrant culture. The local bakery-Aucoin's-is fantastic with fair pricing. So much to do! We will definitely return.
