"The Fox Den": Imagine a whole house for two people, with a yard, a large deck with gazebo that feels like a treehouse above a mountain stream, instead of a motel room. Wow! Great for a couple, 2 friends, or parent-child catch-up. Enjoy the , wood interior, fast wi-fi, kitchen, full bath, outdoor shower, 2 bedrooms, 2 swings, fire pit, and Japanese garden. Nestled in a valley with great hiking, downhill from Deep Gap on the beautiful Black Mountain Ridge Crest Trail.
Update: Nature has healed us after Hurricane Helene hit our area September 28, 2024. Roads are just fine again. We are high above the creek. A regular car can get to the Fox Den, no problem as roads are paved right to the parking spaces. We worked hard, and Fox Den is now better than ever! Reopened in April 2025 and Wow! nature is popping out all over!
This is a real getaway space, great for relaxing and being with the ones you love. Burnsville restaurants and stores are 11 miles away. Nearby are crafts, live music, gifts and groceries, hiking trails and rivers. 45 miles from Asheville with its tourist attractions when you want a city. Lounge and dine on the deck in the gazebo, enjoy the fun bedrooms, and listen to the mountain stream down below. Privacy and nature are the plan. Take a deep breath. Restore. Refresh. Relax.
Guest access
You have the entire home all to yourselves, with kitchen, full bath with shower, 2 bedrooms, (maximum 2 persons total), deck with gazebo, stone patio, plus 2 swings under the house, extra outdoor hot/cold water shower, fire pit, and Japanese style garden. Interaction with guests:

Other things to note:

Under the cottage are two swings also for your private use.
The well water here is different from city water. It is rich in minerals and has a high iron content. It is clean and safe, but most people prefer bottled drinking water. We provide a jug of drinking water. Welcome to the mountains!

Amazing hospitality and great place for a mountain get-away! -Samuel April 2019
Ron was very courteous and responsive. Cabin would be a great base for hiking in the Mt Mitchell area. -James April 2019
Very sweet spot! We were there in the winter and stayed very warm! Gorgeous location, just a short drive away from a nearby town with coffee shops, groceries, fly fishing shops, etc.
I’d definitely return! - Kate
Our stay was absolutely wonderful. Such a beautiful place in the mountains. My family and I enjoyed every second at the Fox den. We had campfires and told spooky stories and went hiking to several waterfalls. We drove into Asheville which is only an hour away and had a fun time looking through all the shops. We will definitely be back! -Sarah October 2018

Thanks Melinda. 'So glad you loved the cabin and had a peaceful pleasant stay! This always makes me very happy!
I gave you a 5 star review too. Thanks for finding the Fox Den! Ron
5 stars is not enough to rate our stay at the Fox Den and our gracious host Ron. It’s pretty safe to say we felt at home immediately upon parking our car and heading inside. The Fox Den exceeded our expectations and checked every box and then some that my sweetheart and I were looking for to celebrate our anniversary. It was cozy, extremely private, and had an overall “I’m home” feel to it. The property itself also provided a fire pit that we used several times and incredible scenery. As a host Ron was eager to provide anything and everything we needed and even made us feel safe and not rushed to leave in the middle of an unforeseen snow storm as our stay was ending. Another stay at the Fox Den in the near future is an absolute certainty for us. Thanks Ron!

Dear Christopher,
I'm so glad your anniversary stay was a happy, memorable one. This warms my heart to hear!
You're welcome back to your mountain home any time.😀
All the best,
Ron
My wife were looking to spend a month in a mountain cabin and Fox Den was exactly what we wanted. The cabin is old but has a lot of character. We loved sitting on the back deck surrounded by trees, listening to the nearby stream. There are many remarkable places to explore within a reasonable drive of Fox Den and lots of opportunities for entertainment and dining. Local people we met were very friendly. Ron provided information on things to see and do in the area, and he was very responsive to our needs and questions.

Thank you for your positive review! I'm always glad to hear things like the cottage was exactly what you wanted, and you loved being out on the deck with the sound of the creek and trees all around. This makes me very happy to hear! Come back any time. ~Ron
We had a very relaxing time in this great property. The area is very quiet and the babbling creek behind the home made for some very relaxing ambiance. The host was very welcoming and responsive. I would stay at this property again.

The stay was great we enjoyed the peacefulness or the place and the sounds of nature
This house is perched right above a flowing creek that will put you in a relaxed state of meditation!!! The house itself is very rustic but has all the basic amenities! Ron was available whenever I had a question and was easy to communicate with! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and would definitely stay again
Perfect for what I was looking for, a place to hike from and visit Mt. Mitchell for me and my two kids. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area, and then had a comfortable place to return to rest. Thanks again for letting us enjoy your cabin!
We enjoyed our stay at the Fox den. It was very pleasant, quiet and neat! It is not on the main stream of things to do, but if you are looking for some R & R, and that was what we were looking for, some rest and relaxation, then this is the place to be!
My girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay here. The cabin is cozy with plenty of fox themed decorations and a deck that's great for taking in some fresh air.
The cabin is in a nice, quiet location. The creek running behind it provides background noise great for falling asleep or just relaxing.
Overall, this is a nice cabin to stay in.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Loved the sound of the creek when the windows were open. Our host was very responsive to our messages. We far away enough from town yet close enough if we needed anything.
We were there to spend some time in the mountains and do some hiking. It was a great location, reasonably priced, and had everything we needed for our stay. It was really nice to be able to sit outside on the deck in the evening for dinner. My son had a great time in the creek.
We would definitely stay here again.
Great little place! Nothing fancy, but has all you need. The creek below was very nice. We were close to our hikes in Mt. Mitchell area. Burnsville wasn't far and we enjoyed Home place brewery after our hiking. Would definitely stay again. Thanks Ron!
This cottage is wonderful, cozy and just what I wanted, even a swing outside. It was such a calm space, tucked away in the woods. I LOVED IT! Best VRBO yet. And the owner was incredibly helpful. I hope to book it again!
I really enjoyed this cabin....it was very peaceful and included everything we needed to be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Mornings on the deck with coffee, and the outdoor showers were both highlights! Ron is a very accommodating and friendly host. This is a quiet, warm and comfortable get-a-way, I hope to return in the near future.
I booked this spot as a place to stay before running Quest for the Crest at Mt. Mitchell. Communication w Ron was excellent. The cabin was well located and safe. I was able to easily explore trails within a 90 min drive along the AT. The creek sounds so nice!
We had a wonderful stay
We enjoyed meals in the gazebo
We made way to a waterfall which was so much fun!!!
We want to purchase it and move there!!
That’s the children’s review anyway
Great 😊Times!!!!
Memories made!
Beautiful location, house, the sounds of the creek are sublime. Hour to highlands, less to Asheville. Got to see snow, real family excitement, first time for most. We really enjoyed our time at the Fox Den.
Fox Den was the perfect cabin to use as a base to explore the neighborhood and surrounding areas. I nice hike out the front door led us to Twin Falls, which was iced over! The cabin had everything we needed and was very cozy and clean. Board games were used with the kids every night, as was the Netflix and internet. Highly rexommend.

About the host

I grew up traveling. I'm a musician and my parents were missionaries in Korea, so world travel was normal for me from the get go. Staying in people's homes, hotels, and my own homes has given me an appreciation of feeling "at home", and a creative, fun use of space. I spend part of my time in Asheville, NC, and often stay at the Fox Den thinking of new ways to please my guests, and enjoying this simple and surprising special place.
Why they chose this property
The Fox Den was a getaway "love nest" for a couple from Asheville. They loved to come up to be alone together, to write, and to "do nothing". Sadly the husband passed away. To keep the dream alive it continues to be a "love nest" for couples, families or just you. The Fox Den is in a long established community of people who wanted to get away from it all. It is a safe and peaceful neighborhood - great for a casual stroll along the stream, or for serious hiking along the Black Mountain Ridge Crest Trail. The valley has a long history of logging roads that wind up the mountain that are now very nice hiking trails.
What makes this property unique
I fell in love with The Fox Den for its tranquility, with my favorite place being out on the deck over the stream. Inside, I put the couch and easy chairs facing each other for conversation. I thought of not having a TV, but have succumbed with a nice TV and smart DVD player that gets internet services. Outside the house there are no less than four dining areas and two swings. The deck itself is great for a few hours of sun, and bright stars at night. We get a lot of hikers, and folks who want to visit Asheville, but want to avoid the crowds and higher prices, and just want to relax quietly when they come "home". Families like the strolls through the forested neighborhood, the creek, fishing, and nearby crafts and outdoor activities. It's simple, just rustic enough, and people say their experience here borders on the magical. That's nice to hear. It really makes me happy when i read the wonderful guest notes of what a nice time people had.
