Wainaku Camp Home

Fantastic value! Come and enjoy this newly remodeled sugarcane plantation-style home that is only 5 minutes from downtown Hilo. This is the perfect place to come with family and friends as there are 2 homes available on the property. The homes are just off the beaten path, away from tourist areas, in a local camp style neighborhood. Perfectly situated to explore both the shops and museums of downtown Hilo as well as the many gorgeous waterfalls, botanical gardens, and more along the amazing Hamakua Coast!
Please note that there are neighborhood animal (mostly roosters) noises that we cannot control. Earplugs are provided for your comfort.
This is the larger home on the property and has two lovely bedrooms; queen sized beds, a sofa sleeper, dining area, bar area and one bathroom. It is equipped with TV, wifi, and off-street parking. This home has a BBQ and a covered outdoor dining space to relax in after a long day of exploring the island. There is plenty of room outside to run and play or to sit and hang out. Check out the many large and beautiful fruit trees including avocado, lychee, and breadfruit. A few games are provided in case you need a break from sight-seeing and want to just have some fun around the house.
If the sounds of the Hawaii (coqui frogs and roosters) are a little too loud for your comfort, there are earplugs provided for all.
This home offers basic accommodations it is not a luxury rental.
For all stays, we provide the basics (toilet paper, paper towel, shampoo, conditioner) to get you started on your vacation. It is up to the guests to replenish as needed.
As of September, 2022 there will be a new full bathroom located just outside the home in a separate building. Perfect to rinse off all the sand after a beach day! Pictures coming soon.
This is the 2nd or back house on the property.

The washing machine is located inside the home. Covered space is available outside to hang-dry your clothing. There is no dryer.

Home away from home

Nice cozy place that make me feel at home. Just a few minutes away from Hilo Town. Large kitchen to prepare home cooked meals. 2 full baths for our convenience.

A taste of living local

Camp houses were the typical house for workers on sugar plantations. This house has been updated but still retains the camp house essence. If you want to experience a taste of the local way of living this house is a good option. It's location is very convenient to Hilo and the main highway.

It was pretty good

My favorite part about this place was the avacado tree in the back yard! The avacados were huge and tasted amazing. The rooster noise was fine. The house itself was pretty old and kindof rundown. The lack of dryer was annoying. Location was pretty good.

Needs work

Property needs lots of work, tub has lots of grout, refrigerator has some mold. The floor feels a little wired near the refrigerator.

Noisy house

The house was clean and nice. The big problem was we were awakened by the roosters in the trees right outside the back of the house starting to crow at 4 in the morning non stop We tried everything like closing all the windows and wearing ear plugs sleeping on the couch, pillows over our head but nothing helped

Extreme noise warning

This property should come with a warning that from 3:00am-8:00am every day there are multiple families of roosters/chickens that make it impossible to sleep—even with earplugs. They live in the trees surrounding the property and under the house. The noise is constant during that time. The interior and exterior of the property was presented to us unclean. Black moldy shower curtain, floors so dirty your feet turn black from walking around. There were five bags of rotting garbage with maggots greeting us upon arrival. They were piled outside the bedroom windows, so the first night we had to cover our faces to try to sleep and avoid smell. The property manager sent someone the second day to pick up trash. Stained couch is “third bedroom”. Washer in the living room is loud and makes it hard to have conversation if you are washing clothes. No dryer—only drying rack. Both of us agreed this was the worst VRBO we have stayed in. This was truly an unfortunate choice.

Wainaku/Hilo

The location was convenient and we were able to access all of East Hawaii. My daughter and son-in-law liked the retro charm of the "old plantation house". A few details would make the stay even better. Warm water to the bath room sink, a tub stopper that fit and a washer and drier in the unit.
