About this property

Beautiful Truro Post & Beam Home in the National Seashore

Super private, comfortable, and authentic… Don’t miss the chance to spend time relaxing in this one-of-a-kind, utterly charming studio in Truro’s National Seashore.

This lovely, post and beam home is a peaceful, year-round getaway. Praised as the perfect setting for writers, artists, teachers, yogis, and beach lovers, the studio offers solitude and gorgeous surroundings for all.

Located one mile from spectacular Longnook Beach, this home provides a delightful walk or bike ride any time of day. As an alternative, it is a 10-minute ride to Corn Hill Beach on the bay-side and a secluded woodland walk at the end of Higgins Hollow Road.

Ceiling fans take the edge off a hot summer day, and radiant heat offers glorious warmth during chilly fall and winter weather. The home has 2 bedrooms, a futon for guest sleep overs, an indoor bathroom (tub & shower), and outdoor shower. It is fully winterized for year round use and includes a full complement of new kitchen appliances, an indoor dining area, and living room. There is a full basement with beach chairs and umbrellas, and a washer and dryer (laundry soap provided). For those who prefer drying their clothes in the fresh air, there is an outdoor clothesline.

This home is an ideal blend of indoors and out. The home’s cathedral ceilings, many windows, and open floor plan add a sense of openness and light to each room. During the warm months, the spacious screened in porch has tables and comfortable chairs that provide the perfect place to start the day with a cup of tea or coffee while serenaded by song birds. Its round table accommodates eight for delightful summer dinners with cool evening air, without concern for those pesky mosquitoes. The outdoor grill and the adjacent, well stocked kitchen are only a few steps away so that cooking and serving are a breeze, and dinning is a true pleasure. The adjacent large deck is ideal for sunbathing and socializing, and is complemented by a lawn that invites meditation, outdoor games, or well deserved cat naps.

The welcoming arrangement of the living room’s futon/couch, arm chairs and side tables cater to cozy reading or lively conversation. The master bedroom, located on the main floor, has a queen size bed, closet, large six-drawer bureau, side window, and a screen/glass slider that opens onto the deck and outdoor shower.

The upstairs bedroom has windows and a skylight, a large bureau, and pegs for hanging items.. It is set up as two twin beds, but can be configured as a king if requested ahead of time.

The owners have adopted several sustainable energy saving practices, including solar panels, recycling and composting. Longnook Meadows Farm is a stone's throw away and offers ultra fresh organic vegetables.

Whatever your vacation expectations, you will find that living in this beautiful post and beam studio home is a dream come true.

About the host

Why they chose this property

Chris’ grandmother, Laura Ramsey Merriss, purchased this property in 1923. It was comprised of a ¾ cape home, a barn and a smoke house. In their original form, these buildings were among the very oldest in Truro. The barn served as a youth hostel for adventurous travelers and subsequently as the summer dormitory for the Clark family kids. The original barn was eventually rebuilt as a new post and beam with permission from the National Seashore in 1995.

In a small hut up in the woods behind the barn, Chris’ grandmother and step-grandfather, Johnny Johnson, originated the idea of a local newspaper, and thus founded the Cape Codder. It was in this hut that they wrote a children’s book called ‘The Leaky Whale.”

The entire property is situated in the National Seashore at the corner where Longnook Road and Higgins Hollow Road meet, so tenants are guaranteed a totally relaxing and very quiet respite in a private, Truro Valley. If you want more excitement, art, fine dining, or music, you are but 5-7 miles away in either direction from Wellfleet or Provincetown. If you’re in the mood for serenity, you are within walking distance (1 mile) of Longnook Beach with its magnificent dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and a 1.5 miles from Corn Hill Beach on the bayside.

This valley, this property, and this town are very special places… not just to those of us who grew up here, but to everyone who comes to visit or stay. We hope you enjoy your stay here, too!
