About this property
Escape to a Mountaintop Retreat in SW Colorado
Three bedroom, two bath, log home on 160 acres in the middle of the San Juan National Forest. We are off-the-grid but powered by solar energy & propane with our own wells and infrastructure. Our ranch is located adjacent to a Forest Service Lookout Tower at 9600 feet. We have views of the nearby snow-capped La Plata peaks as well as Sleeping Ute Mountain to the west.
The Bunkhouse has a full working kitchen, a pot-belly heating stove for colder weather, and a central dining room. One of the bedrooms has full-sized bunkbeds anda sleeping loft with a full futon mattress. The upper bedroomhas a full bed and the 3rd, lower bedroom has a queen bed; so five beds in all.
The are hiking trails, ATV trails, and riding trails all around the ranch as it is a well-known recreational area in the county. We often have a resident elk herd on the ranch during the summer. At dusk it is not unusual to here a coyote pack howling. Wildflowers are abundant during the summer months and the aspen leaves turn golden in the second half of September.

About the host
Hosted by Robert Urquhart
I lived in Colorado for ten years in the 1970s and was an avid outdoorsman - climbing 14ers, skiing and cycling. I went back East to get a graduate degree and work on Wall street but always vowed that I would return to my adopted home. Every year I would make 2 or 3 trips back and every trip I would think I needed to find a way to get back home. It is hard to turn hopes into reality and the road has not been as smooth as I would have wanted but I finally found what I think is close to nirvana tucked in a little corner of the State. What could be better than to actually live in a National Forest at the top of a mountain? Living comfortably in the middle of a National Forest at the top of a mountain. Doing that requires self-sufficiency and self-reliance. We are ten miles from the nearest neighbor and fifteen miles from the nearest little town. but we are very close to heaven here.
Why they chose this property
I spent almost 20 years searching for a perfect place in Colorado, my adopted home, before I found this "in-holding" . The Double R Ranch is 160 acres surrounded by the 2 mm acre San Juan National Forest. I have spent the past ten years developing the property. You would never expect to find a house tucked in among some of Colorado's most spectacular and inspiring scenery. We are solar powered and eco--friendly. Most summers we have a resident elk herd on our pastures. At night and early in the morning we are serenaded by a local coyote pack. But the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms functional. And the views and sunsets from the front porch are remarkable.
What makes this property unique
Fully functional house in the middle of the wilderness. A master bedroom, an upstairs bedroom with a full bed, and the last bedroom has a bunkbed with full mattresses and an overlooking loft. The full kitchen looks onto the dining room/common room. There are porches on two sides.
