We stayed here for a large family reunion. The space and amenities were just what we needed for a large group with kids. The host was fantastic, very responsive to anything we needed. The property is a little old and run down, but it served our needs fine. We appreciated the well stocked kitchen of utensils, pots, pans, etc. We were able to easily make a full Thanksgiving meal.
Beautiful lakefront property, with such fun amenities. It was the perfect place to stay for our extended family - plenty of places to gather, plus plenty of spots to "retreat" when we needed a little quiet time. The owners could not have been more friendly and helpful.
Great place for our guys golf weekend. Lots of space, activities and comfort. Older home but very clean and perfect for us guys. All the amenities you would want.

We believe our home to be a comfortable, clean, well equipped, FUN place to enjoy your time away with family and friends. It is called “Camp Run-A-Muk” for a reason. It does not boast fancy and expensive updates but all the practical needs for a pleasant time away. It certainly is NOT intended for a “party” house or “frat house” and we would hope that no one would treat it as such. We are disappointed that you rated us a Zero with no specifics or communication.
The house was fine. It just needs lots of updates. Basement stairway carpet is significantly stained. I’m not picky though and if needed wouldn’t mind staying there again…Lots of room for a big group. Hosts were pleasant and we had no issues.

Hi Andrea,
Thanks for taking good care of our home. We hoped to replace some flooring this winter but got sidetracked when we lost our dock in Hurricane Helene. It's definitely next on the list! Hope you can stay again soon.
We felt very welcome to at this obviously well-loved family home. It was cozy and had plenty of room for sleeping for our 13 guests. The kitchens were very well stocked and the options for things to do when we weren't focused on our workshop were plentiful. We had excellent communication with the owners and they were happy to answer questions. Looking through the guest book we could see many others felt the same way we did. We would love to return.
Our family really enjoyed Camp Run a Muk. The 2 kitchens had everything we could possibly need. there was a slight glitch with a bedroom but plenty of room to spread out for what we needed. The dock was very nice for our son’s boat and plenty of space for us there as well. Loved the hot tub after dinner and got to see the fireworks from Crawdads stadium on Sunday night. Hope we get to come back!!
Great gathering place for families who like to get together with each other without worrying about damaging property, very comfortable. Swimming not available due to hurricane damage but all else in service. Needs a few updates to equipment (kayaks, canoe) but campfires and outdoor seating and swings and statues! Are great. Two kitchens for cooking including all possible utensils was wonderful. Hosts were friendly and available immediately when a key problem occurred. We would rent this property again if in this area.
My gamily (25 of us!) traveled to Camp Run-a-muk and loved every minute of the ~week. We all agreed that was one of our very favorite family vacations. We took full advantage of all your wonderful amenities; the teen boys loved the pool table! They also got a kick out of watching the adults play foosball. The house was the perfect size - plenty of comfy beds and clean baths.
Overall- fabulous space. The lake front views were lovely, and the water was warm enough to swim in.
One of my personal favorite things: the awesome eclectic art all around the house. So cool!!

We had trouble getting into the house due to some glitch with the VRBO website because we were not given the lockbox code until the last minute. Had to call VRBO to get code.Older property and it showed.Outside was not neat, clean and orderly.Lake kayaks and floats were not clean and fully functional.Outside path lights were on during the day and off at nightLight switch for lake side outside night light was nonfunctional. The cleaning fee seemed disproportionate to the level of cleanliness of the house. No bath towels or toiletries items were provided which we knew in advance but for the price something should have been provided.Camp-Run-Amuck is an appropriate name for this place.
Dirty carpets, family room fireplace not operating and hosts ignored our concerns.
House was not as posted : carpets in all bed rooms and stairs were very heavily stained and dirty . Outdoor walkway to lower yard was rotted thru and dangerous. Windows overlooking lake were dirty in and out . Hot tub smelled musty. Both outdoor grills cook surfaces were rusted through . Family room fireplace was inoperable. Host did not offer any remedy after concerns were reported on check in day and again the 2nd day of 5 night stay. This property needs lots of updating and a deep cleaning.

The purpose of a review is to share both positive & negative ACCURATE information for the benefit of future guests. Your review seems intended to purposely deceive future guests. By staying the entire length of your contract, you obviously had an overall pleasant stay. The truth is: As I told you 2 weeks before you entered the home, carpets are clean with some stains in 2 bedrooms & stairway to basement but hurricane damages led us to address other issues first – our goal is to replace the flooring in the near future. Family room FP on main level DOES work but basement FP is propane (safety concerns so not operable). Yard to lake is accessible through the basement & also along the paved driveway to the right side of the home. We would have gladly had a crew come clean any dirty windows if we had been made aware, but your implication that you did not have clear lake views is absurd as almost all rooms have lake views. After you left, our cleaning crew found smudges on 2 windows. When you complained about the hot tub temp, you did not mention any musty smell & when we scheduled our tech to visit, you told us the temp was just fine. Grill grates are not rusted through; any rust can be cleaned with the provided wire brush. We responded within 15 minutes of your initial complaint regarding the stained carpet, grill grates & FP. Day 2 we responded regarding the hot tub temp issue & requested that all issues be sent along with pictures. We heard nothing from you until after you checked out & then offered a partial refund.

Great place for a large group with children
We really enjoyed our stay. The location on the lake is really beautiful. The home was a really good size for our large group. There was plenty of room to spread out & not feel like we were tripping over each other. The instructions from the owner for arrival were accurate & easy to follow.
The home could use a really good cleaning. It did not seem as it had been cleaned very well after the last guests. The dishwasher was loaded with dirty dishes & we thought it had not been run so we ran it. The dishes still did not get clean so we unloaded & hand washed the dishes. It does not appear the dishwasher works properly.
Overall a very good experience, just needs some cleaning & updating. I would recommend this property as it was such a fun place to stay. Wish it had been warmer so we could have gotten out on the water, but the morning view made up for that.

Wonderful place for a family vacation!
Camp Run-A-Muk was a blast for our family who is active and loves to play games. We were constantly having fun, from playing ping pong tournaments, to kayaking, to card playing and even getting in some reading. The house is very large and accommodated everyone very comfortably. We were also close to a few parks for additional hiking and biking. I would say that the kitchen could use some updating of appliances. But overall, we had a great time.

Unbelievably great vacation house
We had a family wedding to attend May 2015 and needed a place for 21 family members who were traveling from Oregon, Michigan and Virginia, ages 7 months to 82 years old. This house more than fulfilled our needs. The house is so big that even with 21 people you did not get into each other's way. 4 of the bedrooms have their own bathroom and that was sure a plus! Having two kitchens made it easier for us to make big meals for all of us. The view of the lake is wonderful and having a deck and dock right at the lake was so very nice. My family is already talking about renting this house again next year!

Great place group trip!
My group of friends have been coming to LR's homecoming for over 15 years and staying in local hotels. This year we decided to make a change and stay in one location. This place is awesome and had tons of space for everyone! We even rented a pontoon boat while we were there! We will stay here every year if possible!

Fantastic reunion house - fun for all ages!
What a wonderful home for a fabulous family vacation. We range in age from 1 to 70. This house was absolutely perfect for our family reunion. We watched heron's nesting in the trees above, canoed out to fish, kayaked all over, swam in the cool lake, relaxed in the hot tub and fished from the dock and along the shore as well. We were treated to Friday night fireworks from the ball park across the lake that we could see from the back yard. Our kids loved the spacious game room and the huge, grassy lawn - plenty of room for soccer, horseshoes, etc. We enjoyed a Crawdad's baseball game, an easy day trip up to mine for gold in Blowing Rock, a hike up to Catawba Falls, a fantastic day spent on a rented pontoon boat (complete with tubing!) on the lake. The perfect family vacation. Plenty of room to spread out or come together. 2 awesomely stocked kitchens, complete with enough dishes, silverware, bakeware, etc. to keep our hungry family well fed. Plenty of options for sleeping multiple families - 3 masters and lots of bathrooms. Sheets included was a huge plus. We had fun with the younger kids in the paved carport playing with the large assortment of balls and outdoor equipment. The older kids really enjoyed having their own private space tucked into the back of the game room. Wide variety of DVDs and VHS tapes provided plenty of options for movie night. Owners of this home were very accommodating. We will be renting Camp Run-A-Muk again soon. Looking forward to creating many more memories here.

Great for large groups
Wow! what a wonderful home you all have. We came down from Staunton with a few friends and had the LR Womens Soccer team over for dinner Sat. night and you wouldnt have known they were there the house was so big! We brought down a jetski which they enjoyed despite the cold water. They had a wonderful time with pool table, foosball, pingpong, hottub and so much more. There was plenty of kitchens to cook for everyone and plenty of tables to eat at. Nice setting and dock was nice and sunny. So much fun was had by all. Thanks for sharing your wonderful home with us and allowing us to check out late on Monday since the soccer game was in the afternoon. That made it so much more convenient. We will be back.

Camp RAM holds our #1 spot for family vacations.
I'd like to start by saying your house is fabulous. We were really very comfortable with just a few exceptions and I'd like to share them with you. More on that in a moment. First and foremost, the good:
We loved the layout! We only ended up with 14 so we had plenty of room and privacy for everyone. This is the first home that we have talked about renting again. From the dock to the fire pit to the morning porch and the rec room, there was always a different spot for all us to get together and play games or talk or do what we do best, eat. Which brings me to my personal favorite. Having two kitchens and three refrigerators was a total blessing! A quick run to the store by one or two people was the only reason any of us left the camp all week. You guys have provided so many amenities and "toys" that we didn't need to visit an attraction to have fun. We loved all of the yard games and kayaks, canoe and other lake toys. The hot tub, pool and ping pong tables were used by all of us. We enjoyed playing cards in the game room off the main rec room. Have I mentioned How. Much. Space. there was?? We loved it! There's a rock right across the lake that we docked at and happened upon a trail that led to a boy scout cabin. What fun that trail was to walk. Speaking of fun, we held a field day on Tuesday and boy did we have a blast. Having the whole yard to play in was fantastic!
Now the very short list of negative: Firstly, the spiders are unbearably bad. They are everywhere! And we aren't afraid of a few spiders (in fact, we have been known to take lots of pictures when we see one) but when they're making webs in the chair you sit in or crawling in the hoodie of your jacket, well its a bit much. The other issue we had were the appliances. If we had known that the dishwasher needed to be run twice at times or the oven heated to a much higher degree than you intend, we would have been better prepared and would have rinsed the dishes better and not burned so many dinners. The only other, very minor issue we had was the absence of tvs in the bedrooms. Some nights, after a long day of cooking, cleaning and playing with 14 other people, most of us just wanted to lay in bed and watch a little tv. Adding tvs to the bedrooms would be a huge plus for us but we weren't lost without them either. All in all, we loved your home. We are seriously considering returning next year. Thank you so much for opening your beautiful "camp" to us.

The pictures don't do it justice!!
We held our annual women's retreat at this house -- we had 22, and all slept comfortably. The dual kitchens were a gift, and the view of the water is spectacular!
The house has a wonderful relaxed feel. Its the kind of place you just want to never leave..... can't wait to rent it again!!!

excellant choice
This home was truly a home. You felt welcomed as soon as you entered. Everything was in working order. We had been recommended to try this house and I in turn have recommended it to many others. The lake views were specular! We did rent a pontoon boat for 2 days and explored the lake. The water was warm and the dock gave us easy access to it. We enjoyed the kayaks and canoe. The hot tub was very large and worked perfectly. We will be back! The toys provided for the youngest members was a pleasant unexpected surprise. The game room was large.

Great for large family gathering
This property worked great for our family coming from VA, NC, PA, OH, and IN. We had 12 adults from 19 to 77 and everybody found a bedroom and bathroom that suited them (quiet/loud, early riser/late sleeper, private/shared) on three different floors. There would have been plenty of beds and bathrooms for more adults and kids without feeling crowded.
The two kitchens came in handy, and the rec room kitchen is close to the big gas grill that we used for one meal. And there were plenty of tables on the main floor, in the basement rec room, and outside for indoor and outdoor meals, games, puzzles, reading, etc.. The pingpong table and foosball table in the rec room were great and well used. We even had room to setup a music area in the rec room (small drum set, PA system with four mics, small guitar amp, 2 electric guitars, about 5 or 6 acoustic guitars, and assorted smaller instruments). This is a BIG house.
The hammock, lawn chairs (plenty of them), canoe, and hot tub were all used and enjoyed throughout our week. The hot tub especially is very large, seating 6 or more comfortably, sheltered from direct sun, and facing the lake so it was a favorite gathering place.
The house is easy to get to off both I40 and Rt 321 which are the major arteries in every direction, although it may be a bit confusing to find the first time. The lakefront location is very close to a marina where we rented a pontoon boat for a day and had a great time cruising on the smooth, quiet lake. Highly recommended--if we come back we'll make sure we rent a boat for the whole week. Even on the weekend we were there, the boat traffic wasn't heavy or fast, so it was easy to steer and dock the boat at the dock right in front of the house.
If our travels bring us back to Hickory, we would definitely rent this house again.

Great place for a large group
We are a group of 5 families with 20 people between the ages of 3 and 80 who stayed over Thanksgiving weekend. We had several families from Florida and one family that was from New Jersey. Hickory was a great halfway meeting point. We had a great time! The little ones enjoyed the big yard and dock. We had 5 teenage boys that loved the canoe and kayaks - along with the dock and firepit. Having 2 kitchens was a blessing while preparing our huge Thanksgiving feast. The game rooms downstairs gave all the kids somewhere to go while the adults enjoyed the sunroom, living room, and the upper level dining deck. The convenience of having the food store, marina, and a Walmart was also enjoyable. We had a wonderful weekend and couldn't have asked for anything better!
