About this property

Charming cottage from 1882 in Baker City

Please ignore a recent reviewer who stated the house is abandoned and boarded up! We are working with VRBO to get this removed for falsehoods! The windows and doors are not boarded up (no hurricanes in Baker City!), and it was rented all summer with high reviews. Please look at those instead when making your decision on whether to rent this property. The house is exactly the same for all these people, only this guest was different. I will let you decide what that means! Thank you!

This sweet Victorian cottage built in 1882 is mere blocks from main street shops and restaurants, the Powder River trail, and local parks. It is filled with original charm and authentic details from days gone by. Relax in the parlor by the cozy wood stove and listen to records or snuggle up on the couch to watch movies after skiing at nearby Anthony Lakes or exploring town. You will have the entire cottage to yourself to enjoy the authentic experience of visiting Baker City.

The picture is NOTHING like the actual property. Completely rundown and hadn't been rented for quite some time. The front doors and All windows were boarded shut. I was left with dirty, smelly cabinets and much more. Light bulbs out, cob webs INSIDE the "cottage". Very clear the Hosts hadb

We are unsure what this guest is talking about, and as the review is confusing with typos and gets cut off at the end, it is unclear what else was going to be said. The picture of the house and interior are accurate. The only difference is that it now has a lovely white picket fence around it. The doors and windows are absolutely NOT "boarded" up! Can you imagine?! Like a hurricane is on the way?! Not true! Guests stayed at the house all summer, so the statement that it hadn't been rented in quite some time is also untrue. Please look at other guest reviews on VRBO, as well as our dozens of reviews from the other popular short-term rental site that I cannot name here, for more accurate and truthful reviews of the property. The house is the exact same in these reviews, only this guest was different. I will let you decide what that means.

Baker City House

The house was cute and comfortable but needed a lot of improvements. The front door is very difficult to open and none of the windows open. So the backdoor is the only access, which will be a problem if there's a fire. The house wiring needs to be updated, e.g., the hot plate was plugged into an extension cord, and only one element of the hot plate was working. There is no working stove or oven, which we did not realize until we were there. The hot water faucet in the bathroom needs to be fixed. The back steps are rickety and need to be replaced, and the entire yard needs to be landscaped. It's now just weeds with a few trees and bushes This house has a lot of potential, but it's a work in progress. It's not really ready to be listed as a VRBO.

I am sorry you did not have a comfortable stay at our vintage cottage. We try to make it clear in our listing that we kept this beautiful 1882 home as authentically vintage as possible, which included keeping all its quirky hardware instead of gutting it and replacing things with Big Box store hardware like what happens with most old houses. Our realtor wven commented she had never seen a house so untouched in the 15 years she has been showing houses in Baker City. We wanted to hold on to that! The oven and two hot plate burners definitely work. We use them all the time as do our other guests. We have never had anyone tell us they didn't work. We did notice that someone mistakenly tried to turn the removed knob prongs on the antique stovetop instead of the hotplate. Maybe that is what happened with you? We were just there and everything worked great. In fact, that old Majestic oven is so powerful it made us nachos in less than 2 minutes! We have two front doors (another quirk). One is super easy to open by pulling out the lock bolt, the other requires twisting the knob and lock in opposite directions as our info book describes. Our young children can open it so we never considered it a safety risk. The hot water tap works also. Not sure what happened there either. It is the original sink so the knob turns slowly... but works. Yes, we let our grass die. Eastern Oregon does not get very much rain year round, but definitely not in summer, and the city urges people to conserve water un any way they can. We personally believe letting our grass die out for a few months (it bounces right back in fall) is a small price to pay to help the city conserve such a vitally important resource. I know not everyone feels the same... just look for the lush green lawns versus brown ones! We hope you will return to Baker City in the future. It is such a special and wonderful place. There are many other rentals that have fully modernized their old homes, plus the beautiful Geiser Grand Hotel. Many great options! If any potential guests are reading this and want to stay in a place that is as untouched as possible and step back in time, and don't mind quirks and dead grass, then please stay with us! If you read other guests reviews from vrbo (and even more at the other short term rental site we use) you will see most guests enjoy the charm and authenticity of the space and love it just like we do!

Quaint and historical.

This is a charming and quaint VRBO. It has all the historical features and you feel as if you have stepped back in time. I have stayed in several VRBO'S in Baker City and this is my favorite. If you need to get work done there is no WIFI so you are forced to take time off and enjoy Baker City.
