About this property

Rustic Retreat Cabin for Families/Sm Groups, "Shalom"

This little one-room cabin is ADORABLE! It has everything you need (and nothing you don't) for a quiet getaway to fill your soul. We're located just 30 minutes outside Duluth, MN, but when you're here you'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. While you're here you'll have access to our enormous sandy beach on Lake Superior. The beach is a 15-minute walk from the cabin, and is absolutely stunning.

Here are a few things you'll want to know before you book this cabin:
- The cabin is clean, comfortable, and elegant, but still quite rustic. The cabin is available year-round, with a propane fireplace for your main source of heat. It has electricity, but no running water. In the kitchenette is a water dispenser for washing & drinking. Adjacent to the cabin is your own private low-odor outhouse that has a little heater and a light you can turn on from inside the cabin. Just a one-minute walk from the cabin is the main lodge, which has public restrooms for showers and flushing toilets.
- There is no drive-in access to this cabin. You can unload your vehicle about a one or two-minute walk from the cabin. We offer hand carts and/or utility sleds for bringing luggage to the cabin. After you've unloaded your vehicle, we'll ask you to park your car back in the parking lot along the side of the road.
- We want to be as transparent as possible about what the cabin is like. In addition to the photos, we have a short 4-minute video tour that shows the layout and surroundings in more detail. We’re happy to share this video with you after booking or upon request. Just send us a message!
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

We felt a bit mislead. The camp is an adventure camp for kids. If the kids were in camp instead of out canoe camping, we would’ve been right in the middle of all that. The staff was friendly and check in was easy. The lodge shower and flush toilet facilities were never cleaned. Trash never emptied, toilets and sinks were very dirty. Our cabin was cute. The beach was beautiful and quiet. We enjoyed the quiet the most but that would’ve been gone if the kids were in camp.

It was certainly not our intention to mislead you. Our business is named Amnicon Adventures and Retreats because yes, we offer guided adventure trips and on-site retreats. It was not accidental that you never encountered the adventure campers. There are 5 or 6 Sundays each summer where our site is overrun with teenagers being prepped for their canoe trips. We intentionally block off the rental cabins on those dates to provide a better experience to both our campers and our cabin guests. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the cabin you rented. I hope you also got a chance to enjoy our enormous sandy beach on Lake Superior as well. Thank you for the feedback that the bathrooms were not satisfactory. We all have room for growth, and keeping the bathrooms cleaner for our cabin guests is something we can work on.

Everything went smoothly and the process was very easy to check in and check out. Location was perfect for getting away from the city. We used the cabin as our home-base while we camped in the National Forrest Wilderness nearby, it functioned perfect for what we needed. Very pretty in the winter and we cant wait to come see it in the fall!

Cozy little cabin. The fridge was dirty and we had to empty the bucket under the sink but those were the only issues. Beautiful area for walking. We loved the beach. Definitely going back next year.

Wonderful property - my extended family rented all 6 cabins for a few nights after a wedding. Cabins are clean and comfortable, property is beautiful, staff is super friendly and helpful. We enjoyed campfires every night and paddling on the river and swimming in the lake.

Cabin and property were great. We love staying here and enjoy the nature and the lake! Many opportunities for other activities, depending on what you want to do just a car drive away. The only bad part of this trip was the pot holes on the county road, we just drove around them best we could. We will be back again!

Great getaway

Staying at Amnicon allowed my kids to have a taste of camping but still able to sleep in a bed. We used the cabin as a base and did day trips around the north shore. The camp was quiet and clean. We had a great trip.

About the host

Hosted by Camp Amnicon

Host profile image

Camp Amnicon Adventures & Retreats is a high-adventure summer camp that offers guided wilderness trips to small groups of middle & high school students. We are ELCA-affiliated, and welcoming to people of all genders, races, and backgrounds. Our mission is to guide people to experience Grace & Growth in the wild places of creation. We hope that you get to experience deep peace while you're here.

At our base-camp, we rent out 6 small/personal retreat cabins and a big four-season lodge, as well several as hike-in campsites and seasonal glamping wall-tents. The cabins are far enough apart from each other and the main public spaces of the camp that you will get a nice amount of privacy. But you should also expect to see other people around the main areas of camp, at the beach, on the walking-paths, and in the public restrooms in the lodge. If you'd like to see a map of the grounds before making a reservation, feel free to send us a message and we'll be more than happy to share it with you.

99% of the year, our site is quiet and serene. There are a few days during the summer when we'll have several groups of campers coming through base-camp for day of orientation before they head out on their guided adventure trips. If you'd like to avoid these high-traffic days, please contact us prior to making your reservation. We're more than happy to share with you how busy we might expect any particular dates to be.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or need help deciding if our cabins will be a good fit for you!

Why they chose this property

Located at the end of a 5-mile-long dirt road, our rustic retreat center is the perfect blend of far enough away and easy enough to get to. We're just 30 minutes outside Duluth, so you can spend your days touristing if you'd like. We're also far enough from the highway that you won't be bothered by the sounds of the city or highway while you're here. It's quiet, it's peaceful, it's lovely.
