of the property and left everything clean and tidy. Lovely to have folk who appreciate the quirky nature of The Rustic Retreat with its funky art collection and the special nature of the location.
Peaceful with the beach in the backyard. Central to other beaches and relatively close to Havelock North. Di is a friendly and outstanding guest. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

Lovely & clean. Great location for the beach. Nice & cosy with the fire and lots of room outside. Host set the kids up in an outside room to themselves & it worked great!

You were wonderful guests who understood the nature of the property and made the best use of its various nuances and nooks and crannies and took great care of the resident cat. Thanks it was great having you.
Excellent house!! Beach for a back yard. How good.
We had a great stay at Di’s home!!
We will stay again when we’re there next!!
Your back yard is the beach. Saw orcas chasing stingrays on one of the morning. Unbelievable!!
Our family of four (kids 2 & 5) really enjoyed our stay here for a whole month.
Diane was very friendly, easy to contact, flexible (we extended our stay) & helpful (she loaned us her car when we locked the keys in ours :o )
The space is cosy, has style and can hold a crowd. Lots of sheets, towels, bedding, pillows available. Well equipped kitchen. We had my parents over to stay and all six of us had ample room.
A perfect beach holiday spot down a quiet cul-de-sac. Great access to the beach (at the end of the garden), walking distance to local shops and cafes. Vinyards all around. Short drive to Havelock North, Hastings, Napier. We enjoyed the superb Hastings Farmer's Market on Sundays, Art after dark in Napier, driving quiet country roads to Waimarama beach.
Thank you Di!
Not without issues but still a great stay and lovely host.
We are a family of 2 adults and 3 children and stayed at this property for 5 weeks. Overall, it was enjoyable. The house is warm and cozy and had everything we needed. This is a great space for shorter term stays as there are a few negatives such as the layout of the house (one room does not have a door for privacy), lack of storage, and shared spaces such as a clothesline, and BBQ area. The towels and linen were old and thin. Pillows could be updated. There is no clothes dryer which we found inconvenient for the cooler weather. The neighbor's dogs bark consistently during the day which put a damper on our stay. I would recommend asking specifically what spaces will be available to you during your stay as the photos in the description are of the entire property which is also occupied by the owner for her personal and business use. With that being said, the owner was very considerate of our privacy, and I even booked a healing massage with her which was a real treat! Communication with the owner was also great and very friendly. The location of this property is close to Cape Kidnappers and some spectacular wineries.

Sorry for the dogs. Council have been notified on numerous occasions and investigation is underway. It’s been mostly quite since last complaint laid.
I will be implementing the upgrades suggested. I will pass on comments about sheets and pillow cases to Central Linens, a local company used by many accommodation providers in the area and beyond.
The spaces were discussed before confirming the booking. Words such as “Open plan” or “room without door” appear under pictures. The whole property picture is there to get a feel for the whole lay out. Normally the small studio would also be available, but on this occasion was not, and this fact was fully disclosed. Lack of storage could have been alleviated if discussed. Will take note of these comments and make changes for further long stays. Guest may not have appreciated the rarity of a long stay option on this coastline.
Haumoana is a must go! Diana is a good host and the house offers plenty of space for hanging out and relaxing, with a good barbecue area and great shower next to the barbecue area. The house has access to the beach, making the stay very relaxing.
Back gate opens onto Haumoana Beach, ok gravel and stones but seriously, all to ourselves even with the great weather we had. Swam several times a day, sometimes rough but never dangerous. Bach had more than enough beds and we could spread out. Outdoor shower and toilet if we wanted, as well as a BBQ area down near the beach access. Shops and pub 1km down beach, Te Awanga restaurant/cafe 6km. Lots to see/do in Napier, Hastings, Havelock North all 20 min by car. Two bikes on site, worked well but could use a pump and some oil. Oven had a meltdown at Christmas-time so Host showed up with Micro oven and we managed. Enjoyed our family Xmas.
We had a blast staying at the Rustic Retreat. Highly recommend. Super awesome spot, clean and a home away from home. Great for our big group running the half marathon. Amazing, prompt communication from Di the owner. Everything you need to enjoy while exploring or relaxing!

Diannes place is a fantasic place, open style and very welcoming! 30 steps to the beach and back for an outdoor shower and beers around the outdoor table along with some backyard cricket. Thank you so much for having us and we will see you again soon :)

A great group of friends who were a pleasure to have at my property. They were very respectful of the space and left it as requested going the extra mile with recycling. Highly recommended. Great communication also.
Thanks Di, our stay was really great. So awesome being right on the beach and in the wonderful Haumoana environment. Recommend staying in this very unique place.

It was rustic.
It was rustic. Bach-like but plenty of room. Close to beach. Loved the outdoor shower and brazier. Plenty of firewood and heaters so no problem staying in winter - we were there QB weekend. Muschka the cat gave it a very homely feel.

An awesome time was had.
An awesome time was had. We had a big group (10 people) and Rustic Retreat was able to accomodate us all. The bach was exactly what we wanted.....simple, by the beach, bbq.....a great place to kick back and enjoy the summer.
Di was a great and made sure all our needs were catered for. Mooshca the Cat was also lovely, ensuring lots of hugs were given out!
Di did a good job keeping the property clean, but the house itself is quite dated and the quality is pretty average. For the price we paid, I’d expect more than what it has to offer.

The Rustic Retreat is purposely set up as a retro Kiwi Bach with funky art and collectables from the past. The wonderful seaside location, and ‘blast from the past’ experience is it’s magic. Photos and description are quite clear. Have adjusted costings to reflect current market.
Wow what a place! Rustic design was very impressive and creates a very nice relaxing feel. Separate living quarters allowed for good spacing for larger groups. Di was a great host and easy to deal with!

Thanks Xing, I’m equally impressed with your fun and “well behaved” group of young men staying at my property. You took great care of it at the same time as obviously having fun. Highly recommend you and your group. Cheers, Di
Thanks Di
Everything went really well. We had lots of fun with our group aged 18 months to 90 years old. Really comfortable, really clean, great location and we all enjoyed your quirky collection of art inside and out.

Runners paradise
We were a group of 10 who came down to Hawkes Bay to run the marathon. Di’s place was in the perfect location close to this finish line and on the beach front. It fit our entire group comfortably. The fireplace was superb and kept us all warm and toasty post race.
Di has furnished the property with a great collection of eclectic and interesting art and knick knacks, adding to the properties character.
The house was clean, beds comfortable and everything we needed supplied.
The perfect place to catch up with friends from around the country!

About the host
Hosted by Diane Reefman
Kia Ora, I'm Di, Hastings born and bred, travelled, massage therapist, childbirth educator. I live on the property in another studio away from the main house. I have created a fun and colourful space , with a real retro feel, that I love to share with folk who appreciate the kiwi bach experience.
Why they chose this property
I fell in love with this property in 1996 for its location on the beachfront and the many buildings on it, creating an interesting space to develop into a quirky living space to house my extensive retro collection of furniture and stuff from many eras. It has a wonderful ambience, combining open plan living with privacy. The neighbourhood is friendly and the cul de sac location is quiet and inviting.
What makes this property unique
Real kiwi bach experience with the comfort of a fully equipped home. Funky hangout space/BBQ area. Groovy retro decor.
