Comfy Cottage With Writer Cabin and Book Nook. Pet-Friendly Fully Fenced Yard
Nestled at the edge of the Bartlett Mountains with a southern view of Joshua Tree National Park and the Eastern Mojave, yet only 2 miles from JT’s quaint village, Farmer’s Market and eclectic shops and restaurants, this comfy boho cottage features best of both worlds.
Newly renovated, this 2 bed/1 bath midcentury house, sits on a fully fenced half acre, and is close to conveniences of town and safety of neighbors, but also miles of BLM hiking trails, which are accessible just a short drive down a dirt road (Take Wren Rd to El Coyote Lane) at the rear of the property. The additional comfy Writer Cabin (and Book Nook) offers a little bonus escape space for creatives to work, read and unwind.
Hosting many campouts and Nerf battles, the yard is kid-, pet- and creative-friendly. Set of four s'more sticks make it easy to roast marshmallows under starry night skies. Kids will feel like they are out "in the wild desert" with the call of coyotes at night, but everyone can enjoy comfortable sleeping arrangements indoors. There are extra sleeping bags in the living room trunk. Lots of board games are in the chevron cabinet in dining room.
Note about bringing along well-behaved pets: There is NO additional charge for bringing your furry friend(s). At least three dog food and water bowls are in the under-counter cabinet just to left of kitchen sink. And, a two-set of standing stainless steel bowls are outside on the back patio. Responsible pet ownership guidelines apply. The large dog bed shown in pics gets washed in high-heat sanitized wash setting in between every furry guest visit.
Sleeps 5-6 adults. Inside the main house, one bedroom has a queen bed and air conditioner; the second bedroom has a queen bed and also a futon couch that converts to a full-size bed that sleeps one adult or 2 kids, plus new swamp cooler and air conditioner. Wall unit for heating puts out plenty of heat. There’s also a portable tower heater. Both bedrooms have a view of the mountains, plus, the backyard’s sprawling 400-year-old Tamarisk Tree.
NEW WRITER CABIN: This cute little accessory cabin is a special little extra with covered deck, cozy extra bed for napping, a coffee and tea station with mini-fridge, Keurig and toaster. (AC and heater). Plus, an extra bathroom with charming clawfoot tub for an evening soak. Fun writer library. Enjoy morning coffee on the deck, hang out reading inside and/or comfortably enjoy the alone-time to work on that novel or screenplay.
ABOUT THE MAIN COTTAGE:
The kitchen The full-size, sparkling clean kitchen comes with refrigerator, electric range/oven, microwave and 4-slice toaster and is fully stocked for food prep, including spices, condiments, dishes, glassware, utensils, Calphalon pots/pans—even bakeware, plus single-serve pancake maker. Awesome place! A lot of fun games and interesting CD collection - we kept ourselves entertained after long days in Joshua Tree. Great collection of books in the writers cabin - it'll be interesting to see once the cabin has been completed. Highly recommended as a nice base camp for exploring the area.

We had an amazing stay at Casa Agave . Everything was perfectly planned and set for use in the home . We enjoyed all amenities and explored the property the first night . We def recommend this home and took gorgeous pictures . Home was clean and towels smelled amazing .
We loved our 3 night stay! The owners were great with communication, and the home was cozy and great location. We were grateful for a heater that worked and one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept in! Perfect location for entry to JTNP.

Thank you for such a great review! We appreciate you taking the time to do that. Glad you had a good time in JT. We hope to see you back again some day! : )
The two of us and our doggo had a much needed chill weekend even with typical high desert summer temperatures. Our hosts Beth and Milo pointed us to their Joshua Tree “Casa Agave” and we quickly settled in comfortably with everything we needed at hand.We love the local “Rancho Relaxo” vibe and look forward to a return.

Comfortable work in progress
We had a good time. Looks like the place is a work in progress with good potential
This is a cute and cozy little spot to land in Joshua tree. Looks just like the pictures. Great yard size outback with spots to relax. Also great and well appointed kitchen for cooking. I wasn't super excited about the neighborhood as a solo female traveler however.
We had a blast staying in Joshua Tree. The house was just as described and pictured. Everything was neat and tidy and adorably decorated. We thoroughly enjoyed the hammock and swing outside as well as the close proximity to everything we wanted to do in town as well as Joshua Tree National Park. The hosts were quick to answer any questions we had and everything went off without a hitch. I would absolutely recommend this property!

Thank you for the awesome review, Heather! Glad you had a great stay in JT! You were wonderful guests. Appreciate you taking the time to write such nice comments. Hope to see you back again some day. : )
We stayed for two nights and were there to race the Joshua Tree Half Marathon. The place was clean and comfortable. The beds were very comfortable. The only thing I would say is to make sure you are comfy with your travel buddies, because the "hanging out" area is in one room and the only bathroom is in the other bed room. So, if someone has to go in the middle of the night, they'd need to go through someone else's bedroom. Other than that little quirk, the place was cozy, cute and comfortable.
The first thing that strikes you is the lot, fully enclosed 0.5 acre, which as we had a large dog, was great. House is 2 bedrooms. Note that one bedroom is part of the Tv area. There is one bathroom, with great shower/bath that can only be accessed through the other bedroom. Overall house is bright and clean, with galley style full kitchen open to the communal area with decent size table for eating and generally hanging out. House heating is great, which is needed around this time of year. Back yard faces away from the morning so provides a nice shady area for breakfast, also has a fire pit which is nice to sit around after dinner. The location is terrific on a quite area around 3 miles outside the town. Town has a few restaurants, coffee shops and grocery stores etc.
This is a great little house that has almost everything you might need. We used it as a base to explore the national park. The only minor issues we experienced with the VRBO were the supplies/ingredients provided were pretty disorganized and looked a bit old (ex. the charcoal bag had only a few pieces left and we ended up having to go out and buy a new bag). In addition, the air conditioner and swamp cooler are very loud but needed on to keep the place at a reasonable temperature. We didn't mind this but it could bother people who like quiet at night and need the AC on. Other than these minor things, everything else one could wish for was present and we had a great time in Joshua Tree. The house is exactly as described, the owners were responsive and helpful, and the documentation included all of the required information. Overall I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking to spend some time in Joshua Tree.
Have you ever been somewhere and the smell of it just put you at ease? Made your shoulders relax and your whole body sighs? Well, this is that place. From the hammock under the tamarisk tree for napping to the star gazing at night this property is the reset you need.
We had so much fun here. It is close to Joshua Tree National Park, close to Pioneertown (Pappy and Harriets) and the restaurants and the cafes nearby are wonderful. We popped by Vons on the way in and grabbed some groceries for lunches and snacks. Oh! Wine under the stars at night...heaven.
I would recommend this little oasis to anyone staying in the area.
We had a nice time at the Casa Agave house (two couples). We enjoyed sitting around the fire pit every night and looking at the stars. The kitchen had everything we needed. It’s a short drive away from the national park. From the pictures, we didn’t realize that the bathroom was attached to one of the bedrooms which made access to the bathroom for those in the second bedroom a little awkward at night. But overall, we would definitely stay here again.
We had a wonderful stay at his property. We had some slight issues the first evening but the property owner got back to us promptly and all was resolved. Our stay was enjoyable and we had everything we need for our family to be comfortable.
Loved our stay here ! The whole property was so clean and the area is super quiet and peaceful. Everything you’d need is provided, it really felt like home away from home.
Casa Agave was a beautifully decorated home and the hosts added so many convenient special touches to make our trip stress free, such as a water cooler to fill up bottles before hiking, a well stocked kitchen, bathroom amenities, and tips/recommendations on local activities and eateries. The hosts were easy to communicate with and quick to respond.
This property is clean and the amenities/extras were much appreciated. I loved introducing my young daughters to Monopoly and Clue. The tent and hammock were awesome and nothing is more relaxing then playing songs from their turn table. I forgot sandwich bags, needed a band aid and it was all conveniently their. This house is stocked with everything you and your family will need!

Thank you for the incredible review! So glad you all had a great time. Hope to have you back some day.
Casa Agave is beautiful and perfect for our family spring break. It was our first vacation since Nov 2019 and it was very safe and clean. My children enjoyed, the yurt, fire-pit for s’mores and the beautiful big tree in the backyard. Hubby enjoyed breaking in the bbq girl. The boho vibes in the decor were amazing! Beth was great at communicating every step of the way and answered questions promptly and thoroughly. It was our first Vrbo rental but not our last. We would love to visit and stay at Joshua Tree again soon. Thank you Beth for the awesome stay in your beautiful home 💕

This property is absolutely adorable and has everything you need for a getaway. We will definitely be staying here next time we go to Joshua Tree. The place is cozy and clean. My friend and I could have privacy from each other when needed and hang out comfortably, too, either outside or in. The owners have thought of everything and it's all labeled, too! Love Casa Agave!

About the host
Hosted by Beth Salmon
I'm a creative and mom of two kids. I've been a book publisher, editor in chief of health magazines, screenwriter and podcaster. These days I’m enjoying designing and managing a few unique vacation rental properties in Southern California with my husband Milo. (See our two other listings on VRBO).
Milo, part Dr. Who, part Indiana Jones, is an automotive engineer, history/political science buff, actor—and was once the stand-in for Sean Connery. Born in Prague, he's lived in (or traveled to) more than 90 countries from which he's brought back incredible tales as his most prized souvenirs. Along the way, he's run into giant sea crocs, cobras and even curious orangutans!
Why they chose this property
We call our desert cottage "Casa Agave," because it feels that way to us: sweet, healing and spirited—like the desert plants that are featured in its front yard landscaping. Not far from town, but close to the mountains, this place has a unique vibe. It's a great spot to unwind, unplug and experience a slower pace. We also love the sprawling ancient Tamarisk tree in the backyard. A favorite nap spot is the hammock strung below it, where we have all enjoyed heavenly breezes. If you're lucky (and quiet) you'll get to observe a family of bunnies (they live under the shed) climbing the tree's branches at dawn and dusk. We've never seen rabbits climb a tree before!
What makes this property unique
We call Casa Agave the best of both worlds: village living and rural desert wild. We are in between the two worlds here. Just two miles from JT's eclectic town, but at the base of the Bartlett Mountains with thousands of protected acres available to hike and explore. The nights are star-filled and peaceful. The cottage beds are so comfy and the night time so quiet, that there is great sleep to be had here! And yet, with the safety of a few neighbors nearby, you won't feel like you're too far off grid, alone on an isolated homestead.
