'Shutters' is a traditionally designed house on the famous west coast of Barbados. Within 5 minutes walk of the quiet but stunning Reeds Bay (see photo), 'Shutters' has the added advantage of a private pool (18' x 12') and garden. All the rooms are spacious and airy with fitted mosquito frames (no glass windows) but the house comes with all bedrooms being fully air-conditioned for those who prefer the cold!
'Shutters' is in the village of Lower Carlton which is between Holetown to the south, and Speightstown to the north. Consequently it is within easy reach of all the fabulous bars and restaurants the west (Platinum) coast has to offer. Lower Carlton itself is a quiet, sleepy village but the Carlton Variety Store (3-4 mins walk from Shutters) offers amazing rum punch, beers and general chatting most nights with fantastic grilled fish on Thurs, Friday and Saturdays, and the famous John Moore Bar is a 8 or 10 mins walk from the house, and there are several nice little eateries within 10 minutes walk. Lower Carlton has a fishmarket which sells the most delicious (and cheap) fish, and a fruit and veg stall which sells local produce. There is also a small mini-mart. For additional shopping Bridgetown, Holetown and Speightstown are a quick bus ride away.
There are a wide variety of activities available up and down the west coast, and the wild surfing water of the east coast is about 40 minutes drive away. The house is 40 minutes from the airport.
'Shutters' is tastefully furnished and comfortable. The housekeeper will clean the house and change the bed linen and towels twice a week. The garden and pool are tended to weekly. Inclusive in the rental fee is the Mandatory Shared Levy Fee which paid onto the Barbados revenue Authority at 10%

We had a really amazing stay at Shutters. The location is in a residential area with really nice neighbours and an easy walk to the beach, and a great fish market. It was an easy ride to the Massey in Holetown for groceries. The backyard of the home is a lovely oasis, and the kitchen was super well equipped which is not a given for a rental. The large table outside was the perfect spot for meals and games. Communication with the host was exceptionally good as we faced plane delays and had questions. A terrific choice, we were so pleased.

I am happy you had a fabulous stay in paradise and that you were pleased with all Shutter’s had to offer.
Thank You also for being great house guests.

Shutters was a wonderful home. It was the perfect place to stay for our party of 6 people. My adult kids enjoyed the pool when we were not at one of the local beaches or touring the island. The location is ideal with a short drive into Holetown.

Thank you for your review Adrian. Glad you all enjoyed your stay at Shutters in beautiful Barbados. Hopefully will see you all again! :-)
Shutters is a great house with plenty of space. Located within walking distance of a very nice beach and a short drive to several others. Also plenty of shops and restaurants within a short driving distance. I would definitely recommend having a car when renting Shutters and getting acquainted with the very nice neighbors. With the exception of a couple of appliances needing a little updating, it is a great place!
Shutters is a gorgeous house. Once you get there you won't want to leave!
Booking with Jackie makes it even better. Communication is clear, she provides you with all the information you will need to enjoy the house and the neighbourhood.
We are frequent visitors to the Bim and we will definitely rent Shutters again.
Thanks for everything Jackie!

Shutters, we loved it so much we came back
This was our second holiday at Beautiful Shutters. It is such a lovely friendly place, relaxing and spacious. My partner and I - and our 3 teenagers, who made friends with the locals and had some great times.
We bought freshly caught fish at the end of the rd, yummy barbeque.
Snorkeling with the turtles on reeds bay was amazing. Jennifer the owner has always been very helpful and keen for us to have a fantastic holiday.
Once again Jennifer - thank you

60th Birthday celebrations
The house, gardens, pool and location are fantastic. Although situated in local residential area the locals were very friendly and we felt safe at all times.
The house is very close to Gibbs beach which in our opinion, having spent many years visiting the Island, is one of the best in Barbados.
Jefferson is the owner of Carlton bar and grill situated at the end of the road and who is extremely friendly and assisted in sourcing the best value hire car, taxi and island boat trips.
The villa owner, Jennifer, is also very friendly and helpful.
All in all a fantastic villa and holiday

This was one of the best holidays of my life. The house is so close to the beach and accessible, yet private. It is a very large and comfortable house with well considered amenities. The neighborhood is incredibly charming. I've never been welcomed and cared for so well. I was torn between drinks at sunset on the deck or sunset on the beach (just a couple of minutes down the path) every night of my stay. Both Shutters and Barbados are often in my thoughts and always make me smile.

Shutters is a fantastic
Shutters was wonderful, well equipped and kept clean by the lovely Eudora. Near beautiful beaches, especially Reeds Bay which is just down the road. A five minute drive into HOLETOWN with a supermarket, shops and some great restaurants . If you can go to Surfside on a Sunday night to listen to a steel band, Oistens on Friday and although slightly more expensive Lone Star Garage restaurant is a must. Would recommend Huntes Garden ,Wildlife Reserve and the Animal flower cave. A great villa in a great location, we will defiantly be back soon. The Bristol Chinnock’s. Thank you to Jenni and Fi x

Thank you to the Chinnock family for that lovely review. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Shutters, and that you seemed to have made the most of all that is going on around. We look forward to your return.
Shutters is an all-around incredible place for a family holiday. It is located in a typical Bajan neighborhood that is verdant and is surrounded by friendly people and animal life. Test it is also extremely private for a self-contained stay, with expansive property envelope, swimming pool, and large balcony and patio area for ultimate relaxation. Best of all, it is only 5 minutes walk from Reeds Bay Beach, which is beautiful and never too crowded. Both Jackie and Eudora the housekeeper are very easy to communicate with, and the house is amply stocked for cooking. One very slight suggestion would be to leave enough toilet tissue on hand for a 1-week stay, since it is a little difficult to replenish this item in the immediate neighborhood. But overall, we couldn’t have asked for more in a vacation rental. Bravo!

Beautiful retreat
My family and I recently stayed at Shutters and we had a fantastic time.
The house is lovely, the area is great (provided you aren't looking for 24 x 7 partying !!)
Local fish fry fantastic, local bar entertaining.
Less than 5 minutes walk from a wonderful beach
Towns of Speightstown and Holetown are only a five minute, $2, whitenuckle bus ride away. Both of these have some great restaurants and bars.
The wildlife is plentiful if a little noisy !! We had hundreds of birds in the garden including a baby heron that came looking for fish in the pool every morning !!
The noise from the cockerel, birds and local dogs can take some getting used to. If you are a light sleeper definitely recommend taking some ear plugs for the dawn chorus !!
All in all a great holiday in a lovely part of this beautiful island.

40th birthday vacation
We had a really great time. The house was everything we expected it to be. It was clean and well-maintained. The kids loved the pool and spent a lot of time in there. The roosters were loud but we came prepared with ear plugs and after a few days didn't notice it too much. The location was great in the village, we got to experience the "real Barbados". All of the neighbours were quite friendly.
Our favorite excursion was snorkeling with the turtles, what a great experience. We also enjoyed doing short trips to different beaches on the island. My favorite was Bottom's Bay, it had such a secluded feel to the beach. Of course we also loved the beach down the street from the house, it was perfect for snorkeling. We saw so many different kinds of fish.
The owner, Jennifer, was really great, always prompt in responding to our questions and providing us with recommendations. Overall we were very pleased with the rental and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do a review Barbara. I'm so pleased you had a great holiday (and birthday). I love our beach down the road, but I'm glad you got over to the east coast to experience the spectacular beaches over there too. We look forward to your next stay. Jen
2 weeks in beautiful Barbados. Shutters Villa is a short 5 minute walk to one of the best beaches on the West Coast. We wanted a place close to Speightstown as we are scuba divers and dive with Reefers and Wreckers who are excellent! The bedrooms are all air conditioned and the Villa is well equipped for guests. Beds comfortable. As it is in an area that is not just hotels and apartments, there is plenty of local ‘wildlife’ to keep you entertained from goats to chickens to monkeys. Everyone is super friendly and there is a convenience store next door. Local restaurants are a short walk or drive away. If you are a light sleeper you may need ear plugs as the roosters like to tell everyone to wake up quite early. I would recommend this Villa to families or groups of friends as there is plenty of space. Lots of hangers in the wardrobes too!
One small ‘criticism’ is that you won’t have access to the tumble dryer as it is only accessible to the housekeeper who comes in twice each week. With the tropical climate it rains regularly and it was a challenge to dry enough towels after a day at the beach when they needed a wash, or if clean ones were left out to dry, they got wet.
We enjoyed evenings on the covered patio or in the living room playing board and card games and the variety store at the bottom of the road has an excellent food option on Friday and Saturday nights. We also love The Fish Pot if you want something a little fancier with excellen food and not too expensi

Little bit of heaven
Myself and Husband have just spent a month at Shutters. What a house. From the moment we arrived and were shown around the house and garden with pool we just loved it..The garden is so lush and alive with hummingbirds and banana birds and the cheeky blackbirds. We had a few days rain and it was so lovely to sit under the covered patio in 28deg watching the rain,it felt so good. The house is so lovely. We had a choice of four bedrooms because there was only two of us.The upstairs front bedroom is so romantic but we chose one of the back rooms overlooking the garden and we could also see the ocean from the veranda. We used to sit on the veranda at night reading our kindles before going to bed and all you hear are the tree frogs and crickets,it truly was tropical magic. The house has everything and more.I always take a non stick frying pan away with me and my own chef knives because in the past I have stayed in places where the knives would not cut bread and the non stick pan did not have any non stick left on it.Shutters had it all.The neighbours are also lovely and helpful.Mario who lives next door will even cut your hair for you.The area is great for eating out, there are so many restaurants. On our last night we ate at Seacats and had the biggest lobster I have ever eaten,it was amazing. The beaches on the west coast are lovely.A few can get a bit busy.Mullins for one but Reeds beach at the bottom of the road is very quiet. So when you see the photographs of Shutters and the pool looks so blue and the garden so green and the house so lovely, thats what your getting,a really lovely vacation house that you don't want to leave.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shutters Villa.
Jackie did EVERYTHING to make our stay a truly memorable experience.
The villa was charming, the garden and lounge area were absolutely spectacular.
We had an amazing time and would definitely recommend a visit.
Shutters is a beautiful villa on a beautiful island. The villa is located nicely with a short 5 minute walk to ‘Simone’s Beach’ where you can reasonably priced sun beds, umbrellas, drinks and excellent home cooked food. Not to mention a fabulous warm welcome. A short drive to Holetown where you can find a good mix of bars, restaurants and shops. The villa itself was spotlessly clean with comfortable beds and pillows. The kitchen was well equipped. Beautiful view of the sunset over the sea from the upstairs balcony.
This was our first visit to Barbados, we will definitely be coming back and would be more than happy to stay at Shutters again.

Wonderful
We an adult family of 7 spent two weeks at Shutters. We have stayed all over the West coast of the island over the years and would definitely return to Shutters. The villa was very well equipped for all our needs, including little things like cool bags. Due to its location , 5 mins up the hill, we found it much quieter as its off the main highway. Also you get a lovely breeze through the house, so we found we didn,t need to use the a/c at night as the fans were sufficient which we preferred. Communication with property owner and housekeeper was excellent.. I would highly recommend Shutters if you are looking for a villa in a good neighbourhood with the best beach on the island 5 minutes on foot down the hill.

Amazing villa
We just returned from an amazing family holiday at Shutters, it is situated in a residential area away from the busy tourist areas enabling you to experience the real Barbados, there is a lovely beach a couple of minutes walk away, where we spent many an evening watching the beautiful sunset. We were greeted by the lovely Eudora on arrival who was always very helpful. The house is very light, airy and spacious, it is well equipped and maintained and very clean. The garden is also very large and well maintained by the bubbly Kathy. The people of Barbados are extremely friendly, warm and welcoming, there are many lovely places to eat locally including Jefferson’s at the bottom of the road or a bit further away something a little upmarket Lone star garage was lovely, some of the family went to The Cliff - which they said was amazing.A highlight of the holiday was snorkelling with the turtles and over a shipwreck, surfing on the south coast, horse riding along the beach on the East coast and watching England versus The West Indies at Kensington oval. The whole holiday was breathtaking and memorable. Jackie the owner is so helpful and friendly, so easy to deal with. Thank you Jackie

Gorgeous house!
We just returned from our visit to Barbados, Shutters was absolutely perfect! The house was beautiful and well maintained by the housekeeper Eudora who was very helpful throughout our entire stay. We were in the perfect location to enjoy the beach and easily get to town for shopping and food. Our kids loved having the pool out back and can not wait to visit again next year, the house had everything we needed and Jackie was a pleasure to work with and very accommodating! We will definitely be returning to Shutters!

Shutters...exactly what we were looking for!
Shutters was the perfect place for our group of 7 to stay! Eudora was there to greet us as we came up the front steps. The house was exactly what we were hoping for...large bedrooms, ample washrooms, great yard and amenities! Although we had been to Barbados many times in the past, we had never stayed on the West coast before. It did not disappoint! The kids loved the pool...I am sure our 12 year old would have slept in it if we let him! It was great to have Wi-Fi for our 16 year old too! Perfect house for a larger group. Roosters take a little getting used to but after a few nights, we didn't notice them! Jefferson down the street is wonderful and we would definitely recommend going to eat there...food is incredible. I would recommend this house to families who want to stay together, but still enjoy having a bit of space to rest and relax. We hope to be back one day! Thank you Jennifer and Eudora for everything!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your thoughts about Shutters. Our family must mirror yours....the kids live in the pool and we class Jefferson's our favourite 'restaurant'. Lower Carlton isn't on the regular 'tourist' list but it's such a great Bajan area. Looking forward to seeing you on your return. J

Home from Home in the Sun!
Shutters is a real home from home with everything you could possibly need, kept spotless by the housekeeper and gardener. Great location to explore the island from with the best beach in Reeds Bay at the bottom of the road - an early morning swim is a perfect start to each day! We loved Huntes Gardens, Crane beach including lunch at the hotel, Bathsheba, North Point Flower caves and the Fishpot at Little Good Harbour. Would highly recommend Shutters and will definitely be returning.

A great house for a family trip
A lovely house close to the beach and Holetown. The house has everything you will need and the pool and garden is great place to relax. The neighbors are very friendly and easy going. I would bring some ear plugs as the wildlife gets up early and could wake you if you are a light sleeper.
Jennifer the owner is very easy to deal with and was a great host.

Thank you for staying at Shutters. We're delighted that you enjoyed the beautiful local beach, as well as our garden and pool. Good tip about the earplugs to block out the dawn chorus if you want a lie in; it's amazing how many birds occupy our garden. I wonder if you saw the hummingbirds that frequent the flowers by the pool...... Hope to see you back when you are next in Barbados.

Perfect Vacation Rental for Barbados!!!
Anyone looking for a comfortable, spacious, relaxing, beautiful place needs to stay here!! From the moment I started talking to Jennifer, she was extremely helpful. She is very quick to respond, and will help make your stay perfect.
The beach is just down the road, and it’s a hidden gem. Great beach for snorkeling, but not crowded. The bus stops are super close, so to get to Holden or Speightstown is super easy. There is a mini mart at the bottom of the hill where you can get snacks and drinks, and I would highly recommend eating at the grill on Friday or Saturday night. It was far better than the restaurant that is close by.
The pool was so nice to have if you don’t feel like getting sandy, plus the outdoor shower for cleaning off if you do go to the beach! Lots of seating area outside and I loved waking up and sitting on the chairs on the balcony reading a book! The AC is strong in the rooms and with the shutters closed it stays dark inside, so set an alarm if you want to wake up early! You may hear animals in the morning though, so just bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.
Eudora the house cleaner is so kind, and does a great and thorough cleaning job! She made sure we had everything we needed and was very accommodating for our checkout time.
This comfortably fit 3 adult couples, but we could have easily had another couple with no problem and not felt cramped.
I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone who wants a relaxing vacation, with easy access getting around and exploring with or without a car.
Thanks again Jennifer, we can’t wait to come back again soon!

Thank you so much for that great review. I am so glad that you enjoyed your trip and that you were comfortable at Shutters. Good point about the earplugs - the tree frogs and amazing dawn chorus can make a bit of a racket so they would be a good idea for light sleepers. I will pass your comments onto Eudora. We look forward to welcoming you back. J
About the host

Why they chose this property
We chose to have Shutters in Lower Carlton because I'd visited Barbados many times and wanted to have a house with a Bajan feel away from the massive hotels. It turns out to have been a wise choice because the neighbourhood is very safe and the neighbours extremely friendly and helpful. Many of our guests leave the house on first name terms with the neighbours.
What makes this property unique
Approved Covid19 quarantine accommodation with front door security camera. The rental includes the Barbados visitors tax for nightly stays.
