Perfect location
My daughter and I enjoyed a stay at the Jack Crandall House so much. It has a charming vibe and has the feeling of a tree house. It was the perfect location for us to attend a conference at the Assembly Inn. Enough of a walk for us to enjoy the outdoors but not so far we couldn't run back to the house if needed. The only downside to this house are the steps (43!) to get up to the house. They proved too treacherous for one of our people and she had to scramble at the last minute to get a room at the Inn. This was because of her physical limitations. Potential renters might want to take this into consideration.

Love this sweet mountain cottage!
We absolutely love this cottage. The front porch is my favorite place to be when we stay there - It is heavenly. The owners are wonderful to work with and so thoughtful in everything they do. Inside furniture is older but that adds a lot of charm. We absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area!

Absolutely perfect!
We had the best time in spite of the rain! The only tricky part of the house was the stairs to the basement, but we didn't need to go down there except to throw in laundry. We loved the board games too! The porch was dreamy.. So much to love and we are grateful to have found this special house!

Old Style NC Mountain Retreat
The house is located in quiet, quaint Montreat, N.C. It's what should be expected of a well kept110 year old vacation house nestled in the wooded mountains across from a mountain stream. The house hasn't been gutted and modernized. It's retained is character and charm. Guests will get some exercise climbing the stairs when they come and go from the house, but that should be expected in places like Montreat. The owners were responsive to email inquiries and pleasant to deal with. The setting is beautiful with plenty of nearby walks and hikes.

Above is a photo of Dean and the grandkids. In the summer, the grandkids like to stay with us in the house and attend the summer day camp, Montreat Clubs. This is one of the things your kids or grandkids can also enjoy about Montreat!

This home is owned by Dean and Lea Carter. Lea is the daughter of the house's namesake, Jack Crandall. Jack was a Presbyterian minister who worked in Montreat as a counselor while in seminary. After Jack started a family, they came to Montreat every summer, so Lea grew up loving the place. It was her lifelong dream to own a home in Montreat, so we did!

Why they chose this property

Although our primary home is in Asheville, we stay in this home throughout the year to enjoy the same qualities of Montreat and Black Mountain that we are inviting you to come and enjoy.

What makes this property unique

Montreat is safe and family friendly. The popular tourist town, Black Mountain, is two miles away while, Asheville, one of the trendiest and fastest growing vacation spots in America, is less than 20 miles away. My favorite part of Montreat is its trail system. I've hiked all 40+ miles of these trails and can give advice on all. Finally, this home is adjacent to both Montreat College, and Montreat Conference Center so is a convenient place to stay for business trips to these locations. This home is spacious enough for moderate-sized family reunions that give the vibe of staying at your grandparent's house.
