About this property
Large 100-year-old family cottage, claw-foot bathtub & lots of deck and porch!
LaMotte Cottage has been in the LaMotte family since 1939. Originally built in 1917, it is now over 100 years old, with the history and charm that only comes with a century of good memories being created there. The front porch is great for watching the hummingbirds, and the large side deck can easily accommodate a pretty large group of friends.
Nestled in the rhododendrons, and therefore shady and cool in the summer, the house is heated with a wood stove (with small space heaters only to supplement IF needed). In the summer, it is cooled — quite effectively — by open windows, electric fans and shady trees.
Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower. One bedroom has a double bed, the second has a double and a single, and the third has two singles. Downstairs, the living room/dining room, kitchen, porch, deck, one bedroom, and one bathroom with the original claw foot bathtub (deep and luxurious, in an old school, really old school, way!). The kitchen is well-outfitted, with oven, stove, microwave, drip coffeemaker, etc.
LaMotte Cottage is the kind of place that invites long evenings of good conversation, jigsaw puzzles, and a glass of wine. It also has cable TV and high-speed WiFi. Montreat offers beautiful hiking trails, a lake, gift shops, and snack bar. In the summer canoes and paddle boats can be rented and there is a free community barn dance with live music on Friday nights! Flat Creek, just across the road, has a lovely walking path beside it and is easily accessible for a pleasant walk, rock hopping, or place to cool your watermelons on a warm day!
A lifelong family destination for our family's summer vacations, it has shown up in poems, songs, paintings, and many, many stories. We hope you will enjoy creating a few of your own here and will return often.

Everything is clean and is as listed. Note that this is a very old historic home so some doorways are small and some older fixtures and amenities. But perfect quiet getaway and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

So glad you enjoyed your stay!! We look forward to welcoming you again in the future!
We had a wonderful stay at LaMotte Cottage. It was charming, clean, and comfortable. My daughter in Swannanoa came over to visit with her toddler and we enjoyed walking to the park with playground. A couple of friends came for supper on the deck. Thanks for the opportunity to stay at the cottage.

We're so glad you enjoyed your stay and shared the cottage with family and friends! That's perfect!
We very much enjoyed our stay at this house. It is an easy walk to all of the Montreat facilities and a beautiful setting. Worked out very well for our group.
Nice place in a good part of town. Walking distance from everything we wanted to do. Unit was newly updated and had everything we needed. Rooftop pool/hot tub area was a plus. Would recommend for larger groups
This is a perfect time capsule from the early days of Montreat... Cozy, convenient, an excellent launch pad for family adventures, and a resting spot after hikes and creek hopping. The hosts are great about communicating.

Thank you! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay (and the creek!)
Overall great experience. Reached out to the host ahead of time and they were very responsive. House was in good shape for an older place and the little touches around the house were great. (Rocking chairs on porch loved). Only thing I would point out is if you show up after dark it is a little hard to find, no lights except on porch. Overall lovely home.

So sorry to have missed replying to your review. Thank you for that and the note about it being a bit dark. We appreciate the feedback!
This is a great older property within walking distance to Montreat and trails. We visited for the 7 Sisters 25k trail race and this was a perfect location for our weekend of hanging out and running on the trails around Montreat. Treat yourself and visit this place and area.
Location was great for youth conference and “clubs”. House was very clean and spacious!!

We love old homes and this one was comfortable and so convenient.
We hiked, shopped in Black Mountain, played in mountain streams, did some gem mining, played disc golf, visited local pools and lakes, and felt like we had just begun. What a great location. Kitchen well stocked for cooking and the family we rented from was so nice and helpful.

Why they chose this property
It's a magical spot that welcomes you home the first time you visit. Relaxing and quiet, with the sound of the crickets and the stream across the street drifting through the windows at night, this is the kind of place that lends itself to deep relaxation, whether after a busy day of mountain adventures or a quiet day of jigsaw puzzles and conversation.
What makes this property unique
The covered front porch is perfect for a drizzly day, while the side deck is perfect to take more inviting weather. The wood stove couldn't be more warm and cozy, and you can simply feel the history in the place. It's' not often these days you can stay in a period property and step back in time and yet have modern amenities and wifi!
