About this property

Watauga Lakeside Cabin - Decks, Ponds, Family & Pet Friendly Privacy

WELCOME to 822 Sugar Hollow
Welcome to your private mountain and lakeside retreat -- new, peaceful, and located on the southeast side of Watauga Lake with full access to a boat ramp and small floating dock. My three sons and I are happy to host you and hope you enjoy this special place as much as we do.

The three-level cabin was built in 2020, of hand-crafted wood and stone, with windows everywhere to let you take in the beautiful surroundings. There are three decks: one on each level and two that span the length of the home. The propane grill and fireplace are on the main-level deck, which wraps around to a front porch. On all levels, there are stunning views of the property, its ponds, streams running down to the lake, and the mountain ridgeline beyond.

From the cabin’s quiet decks, you can see the lake only a few hundred yards away, and you have semi-private, full-time access (along with seven other homeowners in the Sugar Cove neighborhood) to the Sugar Cove boat ramp and floating dock. Bring your boat, wave runners, canoes, or kayaks! Watauga Lake is one of the cleanest in the United States, and affords multiple recreational opportunities, including outstanding lake trout and bass fishing. The main public recreational area is about a 15-minute drive from the cabin. For hikers, the Appalachian Trail crosses Route 321 about twenty minutes’ drive from the cabin and numerous other trailheads are an equally short drive away. Roan Mountain and one of the most beautiful stretches of the Appalachian Trail is a 30-40 minute drive south and 4,000 feet of elevation up from where the cabin sits at about 2,000 feet.

Inside, the cabin easily sleeps 8-10, depending on who’s comfortable sleeping next to whom.

Upper Level: one king bed master suite with a balcony looking towards the lake and a 43” Smart TV, plus a queen-sized sleeper sofa in the separate, adjacent loft.
Main Level: second king bed master suite (new box springs & mattress in February 2022), with a spa tub and shower. The large, modern kitchen with granite countertops, gas fireplace, and a half bath powder room are located on the Main Level. The main level also features a Wi-Fi enabled 55-inch Smart TV. You can access the main wraparound deck, with gas grill, gas firepit, and outdoor seating from this level.
Lower Level: one (new, January 2022) queen bed with a twin XL trundle, and a new (March 2024) queen-sized bed. The Lower Level is a perfect retreat, complete with its own full bath, a sitting area with several chairs, and full laundry room. We also keep at least one sturdy sleeping cot on the Lower Level, in case of last-minute additions of friends and family to your traveling group. Access to the garage and lower deck is from this level.

You may not want to leave once you’re settled here, relaxing on one of the decks, listening to the creeks and springs alongside the cabin, which feed into a network of natural ponds and then down to the lake, or enjoying the new (February 2022) stone fire pit that my sons and I built with the help of a local artisan—no need to bring your own firewood, as the property naturally has plenty. If you do venture out, Elizabethton, Tennessee is a 30-40 minute drive west, and Boone and Banner Elk, North Carolina (including the Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain ski areas), are about the same drive times southeast and south, respectively. On the eastern side of the lake, there are also two wineries, Watauga Lake Winery and Villa Nove Vineyards (check for updated business hours).

Multiple marinas ring the lake. Pioneer Landing marina and campground, to the northeast, and Mallard Cove marina, to the west, are the closest to the cabin. Boats of various shapes and sizes are available for rent at Fish Springs Marina, a few miles west of the Hwy 321/67 intersection.

We had an amazing time at the cabin. The house is beautiful, the property is secluded and the lake is crystal clear. I 100% would recommend this house and David was amazing answering all of my questions before and during the stay. House was clean, comfortable and very beautiful. Thank you!

Watagua Lake

Beautiful cabin/hose close to the lake. New and accommodating beyond our expectations from other properties we have rented for vacations. Peacefull surroundings with a sizable nice deck to enjoy morning coffee or evening coctails. We appreciated the WiFi connection so we could watch Sept. 11 documentaries as our weekend was the 20th anniversary of 9/11 which meant alot to my wife and I.

This vacation was one of the best I've ever been on!

What an amazing place! Dave did a wonderful job with the design of the house which lead to a very relaxing environment. All of the amenities that you could need were provided, the house was immaculate and well stocked. We will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family as a must visit location. The lake is beautiful and access to it is only a couple of minutes away. I caught several nice bass, the water is clear and the scenery breathtaking. The was simply a wonderful experience and we look forward to visiting again next year,

Trip with family - Snow and Mountains

We enjoyed this time in family during the winter. The house is totally equipped and comfortable. We stayed 35 minutes far from Beech Mountain that we enjoyed for snowboarding. We had fun at the balcony and barbecue area. The Boone city is 40 minutes far from the house and a lot of restaurants and options for shopping. All the descriptions and instructions were written down to help us during the stay and Mr David is very pleased to help and give us additional support if necessary. We hope to return during Summer to discovery this adventures too.

Peaceful Getaway

My brother and I took our families here for an extended weekend. This is a beautiful, new cabin 150 yards from Watauga Lake! It is a very private location with a wonderful view of the cove from an amazing deck. We each have two kids under the ages of 11, and everyone slept comfortably. The cabin was super clean, and the owner was great to work with. He even texted us to make sure everything was going well. We spent most of the time either on the deck or fishing in the cove. The sun sets just over the hilltop to the west, and it makes for a relaxing evening. We also brought our canoe which we were able to launch easily from the ramp at the cove. We rented a pontoon boat from the nearby Fish Springs Marina and enjoyed a beautiful day on Watauga Lake. We will definitely go back. I highly recommend, if you are looking for a true place to get away and relax.

Beautiful Property

The house is amazing! It’s beautiful and very well cared for. The main deck was such a joy to hang out on, with the gas fire stand and watching a buck feed from the owner’s feeder. The beds were very comfortable (except for the loft pull out which felt like you were laying on the springs directly) but for a child it would be fine. The house is nicely stocked. It was so clean. The decor and build-out are stunning! The driveway is scary steep but we come from the city where we don’t have steep driveways. Our friends brought their fishing gear so we all walked to the lake and enjoyed it for awhile. I think anyone would love this home, the price was so reasonable and the seller was extremely attentive and easy to work with. I highly recommend this home if you’re looking for a rental in Butler and/or close to Sugar Hollow Retreat. You won’t be sorry you rent this stunning home!

Beautiful, relaxing mountain getaway

My college friends and I stayed here to attend a wedding at Sugar Hallow Retreat. Three couples, six adults total. The venue was right around the corner--the back entrance was just up the road from the house--so it was super convenient. The house had everything we expected for a relaxing weekend. We brought all our food and drinks thankfully, because the grocery store would have been a pretty far drive had we not had everything we needed for the weekend. We did have to make a quick beer run to the nearest gas station just down the mountain, and that was a relatively short drive. Our favorite things were grilling on the big deck and sitting out there with our coffee in the morning and eating meals out at the table. There is lots of seating on the deck, which was great for our group. There's also a great little propane fire pit to keep us warm on the cool mountain nights (this was late June). And the view of the lake peeping through the trees as the sun sets is just beautiful. There is ZERO cell service, but David had messaged us the info to get into the house before we were out of cell range, and we found the wifi login in a notebook once we were in the house. He was super responsive and helpful whenever we had any questions throughout the weekend. The walk down to the lake is pretty short--200-300 yards-ish. There were no lake toys available, but I had brought my $20 river tube from Academy, and I was glad to have it. Between that and a noodle, we kicked out to the more open area of the lake and had a nice little float. It was a beautiful weekend, at a beautiful home, and we were very grateful to have this gorgeous space to share some quality time together.

Great place to stay! Especially for us because we attended a wedding event at Sugar Hollow Retreat which is only 8 minutes away. Rarely did we see vehicles driving by, which added to the coziness of the cabin-in-the-woods-like vibes. The road into the house has a very remote little-used feel to it, but easy to navigate if you drive slowly, and actually quite fun to drive! We did have cell phone service at the house, mostly 4gLTE sometimes 5g. I was also very pleased to not see one 5000k LED light bulb anywhere, all lights were an appropriate color temperature that enhanced the warm feel of the space.

This was our second summer staying at the cabin and again we had a great time. There was a minor issue with the upstairs A/C unit not working. We let our host know and he quickly had a temp unit sent out and set up until the unit could be fixed. We have no complaints and had a wonderful stay. I would definitely recommend a stay here and I’m sure we will be back again.

Private Relaxing Cabin

We attended graduation at nearby ETSU. This cabin is perfect to privacy and relaxation. We had a big family dinner after the graduation. Saturday morn we took a scroll around the area and admired the beautiful view. Took the kayak out for a ride on the lake. We spend the day playing games, relaxing at the firepit with bottomless margaritas. At one point I had to text the owner with a question and he responded almost immediately. Great customer service! We loved everything about this cabin and location. We are planning a winter trip back to this cabin.
