★ OUTDOOR AREA ★
The sun-soaked property offers a fairy-tale, desert ambiance with magic around every corner, from the pastel picnic area to the Hollywood/Miami Vice pool lounge, from the mediation rug to the koi pond, and the lovers’ baths to the cowboy pool/hot tub.

If you don't know what to do, feel free to ask one of our co-hosts (animals) as they are always ready to help entertain you. Speaking of which...

★ ANIMALS ANIMALS ANIMALS ★
Please note that we have 12 dogs, 2 mini-horses, 2 mini-cows, 4 goats, 7 pigs, 7 emus, and one giant Sulcata tortoise in addition to a host of other smaller animals like chicken, ducks and guinea pigs. This means that you really must love animals to enjoy your stay here – they’re all friendly and will definitely come to say hello. Many of them you can hug and cuddle, and if you need help making that happen let us know 🙂

Here are some of their names, in case you're wondering. Dogs are Baby Shark, Tilt, Little Bear, Saucy, Lapsang, Souchong, Ocho, Squigs, Junior, Pancake, Loofa, and the Ancient One (aka Crouton). Pigs are Piggie Smalls (aka Big Pig), Skinny Pig, Nice Pig, Scaredy Pig, Clem, Dudu, and the little pink new guy TBD. Emus are Early and Later, Blondie, Spike, Later Jr., Mr. Pecks and an unnamed rare white emu. The tortoise is Comrade and the horses are THOT (that horse over there) and A Horse With No Name. The cows are Big Head and Bug Eyes. Goats are Zoomer, Nugget, Maniac, and Girl Goat. There’s more, but we’ll leave it here.

Our beloved livestock guardian dogs, 3 Anatolian Shepherds and 1 Great Pyranees (all rescued) diligently protect the ranch from coyotes and may bark at night. We understand that this may be bothersome to some guests and we provide earplugs as a courtesy to ensure a peaceful night's rest.

If you love animals this is the place for you!
Loved staying here! Vanessa and her partner have created a magical place to rest, center, and breathe. All of the animals on the property -- and there are plenty -- are well taken care of and incredibly friendly. I had emus, dogs, guinea hens, ponies and more coming up to me to give and get some loves. This all just enhanced the experience! Great location right between JT and Palm Springs too. Totally would recommend!

Beautiful oasis in the desert
This property is beautiful, Vanessa and her partner have done an incredible job making this place feel comfy and relaxing. Ask Vanessa for a tour of the property because there is much to see! From the plentiful animals such as emus, pigs and Guinea pigs to the outdoor cowboy tub this place is an animal lovers paradise. We stayed in the Art Deco guest house, two cozy rooms and a gorgeous walk in shower was perfect for my partner and I. The kitchen has essentially everything you need to cook your own food other than a microwave. We loved that the house was very open and the living room was right next to the kitchen so we could put on some records while we cooked. (Loved that they had Patsy Cline records) I do recommend bringing extra towels with you if you plan on using the tub and the shower. I also recommend asking Vanessa to get the tub going for you if you want to get in right when you get there as it did take about 3 hours for it to be warm enough to enjoy. They were also kind enough to come down with a golf cart to pack our stuff in so we didn’t have to trek it up the gravel driveway. I can’t wait to come back here again and I also wanted to note how great it was to see how well taken care of not only the property is but all the animals as well, they all look so happy and are very friendly. Thank you again Vanessa we’ll be seeing you!

About the host

My partner and I never meant to be ranchers or live in the desert. But when the pandemic hit, the winds that blew people out of their normal lives sent us from Brooklyn, NY – where he had been city slickers, political activists, media execs, tech startup founders, journalists, travel writers, humanitarian aid workers, and artists – to the tiny California desert town of Morongo Valley.

The ranch grew entirely organically – first we started rescuing dogs, as we had done extensive dog rescue in New York City – and along the way we found other animals in need of a safe place to live and be loved. It started to snowball: we now have over 100 rescued and rehomed animals. And then we invited other artists to come create spectacular works on the property, set in one of the most stunning valleys in America.

Our furry and feathered friends – including curious emus, persistent goats, meandering piggies, free-range mini horses, voracious mini-cows, ridiculous chickens, mouthy ducks and many more – welcome our visitors with open wings to their home amidst the breathtaking desert landscapes.

What we offer is true sanctuary, for both people and animals. The magic is in the mix of personal animal interactions and a truly sublime environment. While art connects us with others and our environment on a deeper level, the research shows that deep, immersive experiences with animals and nature have a powerful impact on our ability to heal from trauma.

Kaleidoscope Desert is our garden of eden – a magic portal where nature and art create a truly transcendent experience. A rare gem to stumble upon.

Why they chose this property

Morongo valley, just 15 minutes from Joshua Tree and 30 minutes from Palm Springs, is a little oasis in the middle of the desert with no more than 5,000 local inhabitants. At once strange and sublime, the hills rise up around you, dotted with Yucca trees that look like ancient creatures come to life. The nights are silent and peaceful, with a sky full of stars that seem close enough to touch. There is an energy in this place that is hard to describe: the sunsets are a work of art, air is filled with the songs of coyotes and the scurrying of desert critters. It's a place where you can come to heal, refresh, and connect.
