About this property

Cozy Cottage on the shores of Lake Champlain with views of the Adirondacks

Cozy one bedroom cottage located on the shores of Lake Champlain. Nestled in tall cedars on McNeil's Bay, across from the Charlotte-Essex Ferry. A spectacular location, with views of the Adirondacks across the lake. Fall asleep to the sounds of waves lapping on the shore and halyards lightly ringing on the sailboats moored in McNeil's Bay.

Views across the lake of Sloop Island and glimpses of the Adirondacks through the living-area window and spectacular views of the Adirondacks from the rocky shoreline less than 40 feet from the cottage.

Private beach, excellent location for fishing, kayaking, sailing, standup paddle boarding and swimming. You can rent a sailboat from the Charlotte Sailing Center across the bay or you can moor your shallow-draft motor boat or sailboat in a protected spot steps from the house (trailered boats can be launched at the nearby Converse Bay Fishing Access).

This house is the perfect getaway for one person or a couple. The kitchen is small but functional. You can sit inside in the living area or on the small porch reading and/or enjoying the water, look for fossils on the rocky beach, or walk or bike on the private dirt roads. 20 minutes from the Shelburne Museum, 30 minutes from Burlington, easy access to the Adirondacks via the ferry or the Green Mountains. A favorite activity of ours is to park at the ferry dock, walk on to the ferry, ride to Essex while enjoying the breeze on the lake and the views of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks, get dinner and/or ice cream, and ride home looking at Mt. Mansfield, Camels Hump, and the rest of the Green Mountains.

A cozy simple house in a spectacular location.

Secret getaway
Absolutely perfect location. Little cabin hiding in the woods. Beautifully done up inside and neat as a pin. Felt like a secret sitting on the porch listening to the ferry and the boats and peeking out through the trees. Very peaceful sitting down by the lake.

Quiet, peaceful, beautiful, and comfortable
We loved this place - it was so safe and private. It had everything we needed, and the lake was absorbing, always offering something to see. We kayaked on it often, and also hiked in the area. The owner is wonderful to work with. We hope to return!

Better than you can expect
This sweet spot is perfect if you want to be away from it all yet have a view of so much - the Adirondacks, the Charlotte ferry, sailboats, some curious squirrels and ducks.

Another wonderful stay at the cabin!
After having such an outstanding experience staying at this cabin last summer, I was elated to return again this year. The host Glen was as gracious as always, and the cabin was well equipped with everything I needed. The tranquility, privacy and natural beauty of this spot is the reason I returned, as well as the close proximity to Burlington. Thank you to Glen and his family for another terrific stay at the cabin!

About the host

My great-grandmother inherited this property in the late 1800s, my grandmother, father, siblings and I spent our summers here. My father fulfilled a life-long dream building this cottage down by the water10 years ago. He passed away just before COVID hit and we've just begun renting the cottage to help pay the taxes. My mother lives up the hill in the house my grandparents built in 1962, my aunt & uncle live up the hill in the camp my great-grandparents built in the 1930s. Note the picture of Mom, age 90 with a cane, winching down a tree while I'm cutting it at the base. Don't even think about telling her that she shouldn't be out doing tree work.

Why they chose this property

This property is a throwback to an earlier era - nestled in the trees, a plain Vermont summer camp in an incredible setting, accessed by private dirt roads shared by folks who've owned their camps for decades. Perfect for getting away from it all and enjoying fishing, sailing, kayaking, swimming, birdwatching, quietly reading, etc.

What makes this property unique

Very private setting off a dead-end dirt road, right on the water, you can't see another house from inside the cottage and the only two neighbors within 500 ft are quiet older folks. Room to moor a small boat or pull up your canoe/kayak/stand-up paddle board. Fish or swim from shore, watch the birds soar over the lapping waves. Ride your bike to the ferry dock and enjoy the ferry ride across Lake Champlain to Essex NY for lunch, dinner, or an ice-cream cone.
