About this property

Sandpiper Palm Desert Historic Mid Century FEB weekly availability

We now have Feb 2024 open and can offer it for weekly, feb 3-29.
This mid-century icon was designed by world-renowned architect William Krisel and is part of a development where all homes wrap around a shared crystal-clear pool surrounded by elegantly landscaped gardens, creating a sense of community. After a dip and tanning session by the pool, you can retire to the private patio that's perfectly equipped for hosting meals and stargazing at night by the fire pit. Inside, this home is generously sized and on a single level, so if you're looking to avoid stairs this one's for you. There's a Sonos sound system throughout and a sociable open kitchen where we see ourselves cooking and entertaining to the rhythm of our favourite tunes. There's so much to do in Palm Desert and it's all just a short drive away, although for a fun night closer to home head to El Paseo Shopping District and discover its luxury stores and great restaurant selection. Or if you’re after something a little wilder, the mountains, with their hiking and biking trails, are within walking distance too.

Modernism buffs know about the Sandpiper, and some consider it the finest mid-century townhouse complex in the Coachella Valley. Designed by architect William Krisel, whose imprint is on 40,000 homes across the American Southwest, including the beloved post & beam "Alexander Homes", the Sandpiper's 300-plus dwellings were built between 1958 and 1969.

Krisel's vision for each unit was total privacy and "tropically beautiful and beautifully work-free." The buildings are geometrically spectacular with their low-slung, flat roofs, sand-colored stucco, and concrete blocks.

Of its circular clusters centered around Hockney-worthy swimming pools and tropical landscaping, eight have historical designation, and this home is counted among them. Located in one of the original circles, the interior is spacious, and filled with soaring glass walls and light.

Outdoors – where much life takes place here, with over 300 days of sunshine every year – you'll enjoy spectacular mountain and pool views and a private courtyard with seating for eight. Cinematic lighting, a pond, and a gas-lit fire pit complete the fresh air experience. For hot days, there is a warm-weather mister.

If you're going to stay in the mecca of modernism, this townhouse in Palm Desert is a fitting piece of Krisel's legacy and a perfect place to experience the area's leisurely lifestyle.

SANDPIPER, Palm Desert, CA. USA | vacation home rentals
This one-story townhouse in Palm Desert is generously-sized at 1850 sqft. plus a private 750 soft. courtyard with fire pit, dining, bbq, and seating. It's hallmarks are 11-foot ceilings and spectacular mountain views. It has three bedrooms and two baths, all with full wall built-in closets. The third bedroom is set up as a TV room/office, but the chairs can be put together to create a twin, or it is possible to have an airbed with legs set up.

The outdoors blend right in, with floor-to-ceiling glass and sliders. The great room and den/office open out to the pool, while the kitchen and bedrooms open to the private, enclosed, 750 sq ft courtyard.

Please keep in mind, if you are renting in the warm and summer months, and it's over 100 outside the house may never get below 75. No matter how low you set the thermostat. . This house was not built for summer living. It has no insulation, single pane floor to ceiling windows/doors, cinderblock for walls, and concrete floors......built in 1962 in the middle of the desert. The systems are 5 years old, work well, and are serviced twice a year. We ourselves have experienced a high of 123! outside, and the inside just wont get below 80! The machine will just stay on and keep pumping. In the evenings, it will eventually get lower, and get to at least 74 ish. . Please keep in mind before you book in the hot months, as this is a historic structure, and again not meant for summer living.

There is a daily fee of 5 for electric.

I was an Interior Designer and of Arts in the gardens for years. My husband was a musician with Disco under his belt from the recording days. He since designed hand percussion instrument and became quite respected, with his keystone item in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art ( you can tell , that after 38 years, I am still blown away by that). We live in W. Greenwich Village by way of Westchester County, in NY. It's been an interesting adventure to discover four very different ways of living. My family has had ties to the Coachella Valley , from 1936, when my Father and his brothers came out and signed on to the 20th Century Fox Studios. I recently found an article from the desert talking about the party that my Uncle Jimmy was spotted at! That was 1936, right when they got off the train from Manhattan and Broadway. My father was the original George Hamilton. My mother, nor anyone had ever seen him without a tan. So the desert was heaven, the Garden of Allah......he bought a place in the Racquet Club in Palm Springs. So, imagine, when my mother buys the frank Sinatra property that became his mountain hideaway, that many don't know about! We spent more time in the desert with its incredible topographic opportunities. From arid, to winter in 30 minutes! The tram takes up to where you can rent xctry ski! or snow shoes! and then head back and lounge by the pool! Hello! thats pretty great........I am at an age where I really don't want to do much, as far as chores. This place is really,, '"calgon" take me way'.......hike at 6 am, courts by 9, lunch at one of the many vegetarian restaurants. Shop on El Paseo, and all the while, you don't think about safety, cause it just feels so safe, ,and you can let loose of fears.......I have fond memories of the desert. I have been blessed.....not many get to experience the open, light, dry, clean, colors, and ancient energy from the desert.

Why they chose this property

I have driven by the compound most my life, but never did I think much of it. Mainly due to the architecture of single family homes that you drive by and not 'condos'. For family health reasons, I had been spending more time out there, ,from NYC. I love a good project. I decided to try some shopping and thoughts of a redo project out there, since I am spending more time there. In one day, I headed out with a broker with a good list. I am a power shopper. Out of all the properties that I had seen that day, and I would say from condos to private, from Rancho M to La Quinta,....I came back to this one, the first place that I had seen.

What makes this property unique

The views are sick! from the open kitchen and living room area, to the patio facing the front, while your having your martinis.......or citrus of sorts from the trees around that abound with fruits! The 750 sq. ft private courtyard is an extension of the house. It really is another room. We have a hammock under the old style of wooden slats, a gas flamed firepit at the pond with waterfall, and the dining table for 6, maybe 8.. ...reallly lovely while surrounded by the old vines of bougainvillea, lush with petals of pinks, peaches, and whites. The main bedroom truly has simple sexiness to it, while the bed is on the same level as the nature of the courtyard, that it faces out to while one has fire going......its as if you always outside, so relaxing......and with that desert evening blue sky and stars with a possible moon spotting while the resident owl alerts the media! It really is a garden of Allah of sorts.......hope you enjoy.
