Secluded Cabin Overlooking Fontana Lake & Smoky Mtns NP
This 3500 square-foot, secluded cabin is ideal for your family getaway or a retreat with that someone special or as a home base for riding or driving the famous roads of Western North Carolina.
Fontana Cabin is located in Graham County, North Carolina, at the very end of a winding gravel road that takes you through a tunnel of trees before revealing a distinctive house perched on top of a bluff above Fontana Lake. The approach into the Cabin is through the main deck, where you will have a hard time resisting the pull of the breathtaking view of crystal-clear Lake Fontana and the layered Smoky Mountains behind it.
On all sides of the Cabin, you are surrounded by either our 4.5-acre property or Public Lands, so all you see looking outside of the Cabin is Southern Appalachian deciduous forest. The view from the deck, where you will want to take your coffee as well as all your meals and your naps, changes hourly, daily, and seasonally, calling you to leave your cares behind as you tune into the rhythm of Nature.
Inside, you will find 5 separate bedrooms and 4 bathrooms that will provide your group the space, comfort, and flexibility it needs to make the place your temporary home. The house was built in 1968 and has been updated over the years to balance the best of its vintage and contemporary features, including most recently with a full-scale update of the Cabin decor, linens, kitchenware, and other amenities in September, 2021, a few months after we bought the place in July 2021, and ongoing updates since then, including upgrading our satellite internet in March 2024, putting on a new roof in July 2024 and a new driveway in 2025.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a farmhouse table that seats six, with a second table for 6 outside on the covered porch if you want to eat outside or if you have a large group. Like the table, almost all of the wood furnishings in the house are unique--handmade from re-purposed and re-finished salvaged wood from old buildings in the region.
Given our remote location, we have satellite Internet instead of wired broadband, but we have enough WiFi capability throughout the house for ordinary computing and streaming--as well as zooms if you need to stay connected to work while you are here. Our cell phone booster in the house makes cell service strong even though it is weak on the road up to the Cabin.
Our LAKE VIEW is awesome, but there is NO DIRECT ACCESS TO THE LAKE from our property. Fontana Lake is a 29 mile-long crystal clear lake that has more than 240 miles of almost totally undeveloped shoreline. More than 90 percent of the land around the lake is owned by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Nantahala National Forest, or the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), so development has been kept to a minimum (including near our place, where the Forest Service and TVA own the bottom half of the 200-foot steep mountainside between the Cabin and the lake).
The good news is that the lake is surrounded by forest and provides an inspiring backdrop to every part of your stay at the Cabin, but the less good news is that you have to leave the property to get to the lake itself. If you do want to access the lake to fish, boat, kayak, or canoe, there are a number of boat launches and marinas on the south side of the lake where we are located, including the public boat launch at the Cable Cove National Forest Recreation Area 15 minutes from the Cabin, and the full-service marina at the Fontana Village Marina, right at the Fontana Dam, 25 minutes from the Cabin.
Please also know that if you are hauling a trailer or driving an RV, we have plenty of parking at the Cabin and just restructured and resurfaced the driveway in 2025, but the road and driveway into the place are winding and steep in spots. It's fine for cars, but not suitable for long trailers or long vehicles over 20 feet, so if that sounds like you, it's best to inquire with us before booking.
Whether you are seeking hiking, biking, boating, fishing, scenic driving, nature photography, motorcycling, whitewater rafting, or vacationing, you will find a full array of natural destinations, quaint shops and the rich history of North Carolina's most remote county within minutes of the Cabin.
Smoky Mountain National Park - 45 minutes to Park Entrance from Cabin You can see the Southern edge of the park just across the Lake from the Cabin, and can access it via the water if you are boating, but the driving entrance is just North of Bryson City and Cherokee.
The Dragon - 35 minutes from Cabin to Deal's Gap Starting at Deal's Gap at the Tennessee/North Carolina state line and featuring 318 curves in just 11 miles, the Dragon is considered by many to be one of the world's best motorcycling and sports car roads. Anyone looking for an exciting highway adventure--whether you are a rider or a driver--will enjoy this famous stretch of US 129. Even better, the road to there from our place is another great drive, called Moonshiner 28. Combine it with Foothills Parkway in TN and the Smoky NP Park road, and locals call that loop Hillbilly Heaven.
Blue Ridge Parkway - 45 minutes to the Southern Terminus from Cabin Experience this world famous Parkway, including the Parkway's highest point, which is 1.5 hours away from the Cabin, just south of Waynesville.
Cherohala Skyway - 45 minutes to Eastern Terminus from Cabin This is a less traveled mountaintop scenic highway with views and curves that rival the North Carolina portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Whitewater Adventures - 30 minutes from Cabin The western North Carolina mountains offer some of the best whitewater rafting/paddling rivers on the East Coast. Nantahala River's Class I, II, and III rapids and renowned providers such as the Nantahala Outdoor Center provide the perfect place for the entire family to have a taste of this exciting sport. If you are hardcore, the Cheoah River has Class IV and V rapids during scheduled release dates. If tube-floating is more your style, there are multiple outfitters in nearby Bryson City.
Appalachian Trail - access 25 minutes from the Cabin The renowned Trail that bisects the entire East Coast goes through our area, actually crossing over Fontana Dam itself before heading into the Smoky Mountains National Park to the north and into Nantahala National Forest to the south.

The view was beautiful. The house was very clean and cozy. The kitchen was stocked with everything you need for cooking. Check in was easy and communication with the host was excellent. We would definitely come back to stay!
We had an amazing time. The house has an amazing, amazing view, it is a beautiful property, very well equipped and beautifully decorated. Hope to come back at some point. Totally recommended, we all loved the place.
Amazing view of Fontana Lake and the surrounding mountains, making the cabin a great spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. Property was very clean and well maintained. Check-in check-out were very easy, with straightforward access to the cabin and no issues getting in or out. The upstairs bedroom was getting uncomfortably hot, especially at night, which made sleeping less comfortable than the rest of the cabin.

Thank you so much for the 5-star review! We’re thrilled you enjoyed the beautiful views of Fontana Lake, found the cabin clean and well maintained, and had an easy check-in and check-out experience.
We appreciate you sharing your feedback about the upstairs bedroom temperature. Because that room is connected to the main living area below, heat used to warm the larger space can rise and collect upstairs at night. We’ve provided ceiling fans and floor fans to help circulate the air, though that area does not have a separate heating system.
Thank you again for staying with us and for your helpful feedback. We’d love to welcome you back for another relaxing stay!
This cabin was amazing! The cabin was very spacious, very clean and had everything we needed. All the bedrooms were way larger than you could ever imagine and has plenty of bathrooms. There was five adults and four children in out party and we had plenty of room. The views from this place is beautiful! It is back in the woods with plenty of privacy and on the way in there were a couple of trees down blocking the road but we made one phone call to Robert and he got them taken care of right away. I highly recommend this cabin for a place to stay.
Wonderful Family Cabin with Amazing ViewsThe booking process was seamless online, and the host was always quick to respond whenever I had a question. From the moment we arrived, the cabin was clean, welcoming, and clearly well cared for. One of the most thoughtful touches was the welcome plaque with our family name on it—it made us feel instantly at home. The three-level layout was perfect for our family with adult children. Each of our kids and their significant others had their own space, which made the stay comfortable for everyone while still allowing us to gather together as a family. We also truly appreciated the little touches that made our dogs feel welcome. It was clear the hosts understand that dogs are just as much a part of the family as the people.Communication with the host was exceptional—from the welcoming text message before arrival to the follow-up during our stay. The property itself was relaxing, with exceptional views and beautifully maintained grounds. The location is another huge plus. During our 8-day stay, we were able to explore several nearby areas including the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg, Nantahala, and Knoxville. Having so many options for hiking and sightseeing within driving distance made it easy to experience something new each day. This was a lovely family vacation. I would highly recommend this cabin to any family—especially those traveling with adult children— looking for a comfortable and memorable mountain getaway.

We are really happy to hear that your family had such a special time together at the cabin and were able to explore so many of the beautiful places nearby. It means a lot to us that the space worked well for everyone and that you felt welcomed from the moment you arrived.
You were truly wonderful guests. We especially loved the sweet note you left and the little cactus. It was such a thoughtful surprise. We are also so glad your dogs enjoyed the stay. We always hope four-legged family members feel just as welcome as everyone else.
Thank you again for taking such great care of the cabin. We would absolutely love to host you, your family, and your pups again anytime you are ready for another mountain getaway.
Everything was wonderful. A beautiful home..spectacular views. The decor was very nice. So many unique rooms to enjoy. The grounds were very pretty too. We had a good time around the firepit. Loved it.
We absolutely loved it! The property was amazing, with breathtaking views overlooking Fontana Lake. The room and bathroom were spotless, and the kitchen had every utensil we could possibly need. The check-in process was smooth and easy, and the whole place felt so peaceful and secluded — perfect for relaxing and unwinding. We truly had a great experience and would love to come back again!

Thanks so much for the kind words and for coming back to stay with us again! We really appreciate guests like you, and it means a lot to know that everything lived up to your expectations. Can’t wait to have you back next year!
What a great home in a secluded and beautiful area! The hosts were amazing too! We had some unforeseeable circumstances arise and they were incredibly understanding and responsive.
This being our second time at Fontana Lake, our visit was still amazing! We stayed a month later than last time and the views were awesome. I would not change a thing about this location. A pool table would be great since we stayed in a majority of this trip, as the weather was cold at times. If you think you need it, it's there. We actually met the owner of the fire wood place at the end of the road this time. He seems fun. If you are in need of a relaxing spot check thismone out. You will not be disappointed.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for choosing to return to our home away from home! It truly means the world to us. We're so glad you enjoyed the views during your later fall stay - they really are something special as the seasons shift. Great idea about the pool table! We love thoughtful suggestions like yours and will definitely keep that in mind as we look for ways to make our home even more enjoyable for our guests. How fun that you met the firewood man at the end of the road! He really is a character and one of those small-town gems that make this area so unique. We’d be honored to welcome you back anytime.
Fontana cabin is the perfect destination for families looking to stay in a spacious, homely house with breathtaking views. Small note for improvement to add shampoo and conditioner for guests.

Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful feedback! We’re thrilled to hear that your family enjoyed the spacious comfort of the Fontana cabin and those mountain views. It truly is a special place to relax and reconnect! We appreciate your note about providing shampoo and conditioner. We currently offer a starter supply in each bathroom, and your suggestion is a helpful reminder as we look for thoughtful, cost-effective ways to enhance the guest experience. We’d love to welcome you back anytime and thank you again for choosing to stay with us!
The place was beautiful and clean! You can't beat the view!! It was very roomy, we never felt crowed & everyone had their on space. Our family had a wonderful time!
Great cabin, moderately easy to get to even with our sports cars (about 5 min on gravel roads). View was amazing, overall in good condition and clean all the way around. Lots of room with a game room and separate living room. Please be aware the "5th" bedroom is more of an open loft with no privacy so its really a 4 room cabin.

We're so glad you enjoyed the views, spacious layout, and overall comfort of the cabin. Great to hear access worked well, even with your sports cars. Thank you also for pointing out the layout of the loft bedroom While it’s noted in the listing as an open space, we understand how important privacy can be, and your feedback is helpful for future guests to set the right expectations. We truly enjoyed hosting you and hope to welcome you back again!
This was our third time staying at the cabin and already planning for the fourth visit! Communication with the owner is seamless and pleasant. Every visit, the cabin is always very clean and organized. Secluded, quiet, comfortable, relaxing, an overall amazing 'escape' from the every day. We tend to spend most time on the covered deck breathing in the mountain air, listening to the birds and allowing the stress to melt away as we gaze at the water and mountains. And because the cabin is pet friendly, we can enjoy these moments with our fur kids.

Thank you so much for your kind words, it truly means the world to us! It’s always a joy to welcome you back, and knowing the cabin feels like a special escape for you and your fur babies, makes all the care we put into it so worth it!
Cabin was very clean, plenty of space, incredible view, and very close to the dragon, moonshiner, etc. Went with a group of guys, 6 cars, and we all loved it!
What an awesome cabin, very spacious for big families. Views were awesome and lots of things to explore!

About the host
Hosted by Robert Bednar
We bought this property in 2021 but have a long history with VRBO as both renters and hosts and deep family roots in Western North Carolina. We are avid travelers who love to stay in vacation rental homes and visit places off the beaten path wherever we travel, which makes us excited to be able to share this very special place with you. We live in Austin, TX, where Danielle is a psychotherapist and Robert is a college professor.
Why they chose this property
Western North Carolina is a nature-lover's paradise. Fontana Lake and the Smoky Mountains are special places, and this cabin is located right next to both.
What makes this property unique
We love the view and the fact that everywhere you look outside the house is natural. We love that just across the lake is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and all around us is also public land. And, of course, the house is awesome--big and flexible enough to accommodate our big family while also feeling cozy, and providing a cool balance of vintage and contemporary features.
