Chill and relax. Or remote to work from the beach.
There are few places like this on the shoreline that sit directly on a quiet, private, sandy beach.
Life is good at the beach, especially when it's right outside the door!
Relax, chill out, and watch sunrises on the porch with your morning coffee.
Catch sunsets from the lower beach deck with your wine cooler or brew.
Drop your line into the surf in front of the cottage and catch tonight’s supper.
Or launch kayaks into the river and explore the Ox Marsh wildlife preserve behind the cottage. The public boat launch is just down the street.
— Unplug but still be connected —
Need to keep in touch with work while you vacay? This is the place. With a dedicated desk/work area (with both wired and WiFi connections), you can connect remotely to work or school while enjoying an exquisite view of Long Island Sound and the wildlife marsh. The WiFi reaches to the beach deck, so bring your laptop and iced tea down to the beach level. What a way to work! You’ll never want to go back to your office.
All photos on this website were taken from the cottage or the surrounding wildlife area. It is just like you see it in the photos!
— About our family’s cottage —
This is a quiet nature retreat that's perfect for couples, singles, and families. The recently updated cottage is beautifully restored with new kitchen appliances, a well-outfitted cook's kitchen, and internet/smart TV. The cottage is open, airy, and comfortably furnished. Large windows and ceiling fans carry the ocean breezes throughout the cottage.
With nearly 360-degree views, you’ll watch spectacular sunrises and sunsets from the porch, living room, and bedrooms. Gaze at the ospreys in the marsh while you're still in bed. Identify the various sandpiper, egret, and gull species from the waterside porch. Watch the sailboats and ships pass Falkner's Lighthouse about 5 miles off shore. Everywhere you look, it's gorgeous.
Our cottage is family owned (70+ years and 6 generations). It's our treasured home that we've put a lot of TLC into, not a commercial real estate venture. We rent only the weeks when family members aren't using it.
— Right on a private sandy beach —
Our family's 1938 historic wood cottage is directly on Circle Beach, a quiet cove on Long Island Sound with 20 cottages on a small peninsula of sand. Long Island Sound is right outside the door, and Ox Marsh wildlife management area is behind us.
A spacious wall-to-wall beach deck is under the cottage and provides a private, shaded outdoor living room with ample patio seating and dining area. The surf is just a few steps away. And the WiFi reaches the beach deck, too.
Upstairs, the large screened porch overlooks the beach where you can read a book while watching the kids and sandpipers on the beach below. Perfect place for dining and sitting.
— It's a restful, beachside sanctuary —
Our family's cottage is located just 20 miles east of New Haven. It's a classic New England cottage with original rustic knotty-pine walls, but recently updated with all the modern creature comforts you need, too. It’s a charmer that is bright, airy, and nicely appointed.
Circle Beach is a small, residential beach used by owners for R&R. It is not Hammonasset (that's on the other side of town) or Fire Island NY (that's across the Sound!).
And it's quiet because this is a residential neighborhood of property owners, not a commercial rental.
*** Having a wedding, family reunion, or large gathering?
This is NOT the place. NO EVENTS are allowed.
— Nature retreat —
The cottage is surrounded by nature: Long Island Sound on the south, and Ox Marsh / East River Wildlife Area on the north and west. It's adjacent to 100+ acres of preserved beach and marshland that's perfect for birding and kayaking. Egrets, great blue herons, gulls, sandpipers, ducks, ospreys, and dozens of other shorebirds thrive here and you'll often spot them from the porch while having your morning coffee in your PJs.
— Boaters and kayakers delight —
A free state public boat launch is just down the road where you can launch your boat across from Guilford Harbor and head out to the Sound, or launch your kayak for leisurely trips up the East and Neck Rivers that run behind the cottage through the wildlife saltwater preserve where you'll spot countless shorebirds.
— The fishing's great —
Surfcast from in front of the cottage and catch tonight's supper...striper, porgie, flounder and more. Or launch your boat and fish farther offshore for larger fish. Or join a fishing charter at a neighboring harbor and go for blues.
— Our family's home for 70+ years —
Six generations of our family have enjoyed the cottage and we're sure your family will love it, too. Because it's our family's summer home, we maintain it with lots of TLC and outfit it with comfortable, inviting furnishings. Enjoy our seashell collection from our beach and from beaches around the world. With several artists in the family, you'll find family oil paintings, photographs, and pottery.
And don't hesitate to tap into our book library, kids toys and picture puzzles. This is not an ordinary beach cottage rental, that's for sure!
Internet (both WiFi and wired) and cable TV are provided. The smart-TV is internet-connected, so bring your streaming account info.
— It's ready for your family to enjoy —
There are always breezes here at the beach, so come cool off and chill out for a while. Expect temperatures 5-to-10 degrees cooler than inland. Just bring your bed linens, pillows, towels, and flip-flops and you're all set for a relaxing, cooling vacation at the beach.

We had a great time in this classic old-school beach cottage. It is right on the water with its own beach, and has an updated kitchen and WiFi available. Great for reading by the water, going for walks to take in the beautiful neighborhood, and lots to see and do along the Connecticut shore. Thank you for the wonderful escape for the weekend!

Wonderful to hear that you got to enjoy a peaceful week on the beach. Our family has enjoyed the cottage for 4 generations.
Even thought it was only an hour away from Hartford, it seemed like we were in an isolated resort. Everything we needed was within 5 miles. It was incredibly quiet and peaceful. I even spoke with a couple of the locals who had houses on the beach, and said it was like this even in the height of vacation season. We definitely want to go back next year.

I am pleased to learn that your week was tranquil and serene at the beach.
We had a wonderful stay. The house is a charming beach house and was exactly as pictured. Location was great literally on the beach. You can hear the waves from basically every room. I booked this vacation for my family of 6 hoping for a laid back stay and that is exactly what we got. My grandmother is 94 and my daughter has autism and doesn't do well in crowds. This location was perfect since my grandmother could be at the beach but not on it (she loved the screen porch) and my daughter could enjoy the beach without the crowds of the big beaches. Owner/property manager was great and provided lots of helpful information throughout the booking process, stay, and check out which was very much appreciated. Highly recommend.
The Chagnon Family Cottage was the exact immersion in nature my wife and teenage daughters wanted. From the intoxicating and rhythmic serenade of the water, to the orchestra of birds each morning, we loved this intimate setting. The cottage is as advertised - both rustic and a family home. Having grown up staying at cottages along Long Island Sound, I knew exactly what to expect. Breezes vs. A/C, quick showers and doing dishes by hand. We came to be immersed in nature and couldn't have asked for a better setting. Daily kayaking in the Sound, fishing with my kids, walks along the beach, sunsets to die for....our stay was magical. What we 'missed' in modern amenities wasn't missed in the slightest as we turned off our phones, spent time with each other and relished the fantastic setting.

Ideal for families with kids
The Chagnon Family Cottage was simply ideal for our needs: two grandparents, their daughter and two granddaughters (ages 2 and 5). As can be seen from the photo, the house is right on the beach, and the water is very shallow for a long distance out, so the kids could play safely.
The cottage itself was just right: not a luxury place that would be inappropriate for little ones, but simple, cozy, comfortable, and altogether pleasant. The screen porch and the ground level under-deck are both wonderful places to relax and enjoy the world. Prospective renters should understand that it is a summer cottage and not a year-round home.
The neighbors were another asset: very friendly and welcoming.
Madison is a convenient location and there is lots to do in the area for all ages. The kids especially enjoyed the dinosaur skeltons at the Peabody Museum in New Haven. We took lots of very enjoyable beach walks.
I believe that the photos on the HomeAway site of the cottage depict it very accurately.
Our 5-star rating is based on what we expected and what we wanted. It's a great cottage in a great place. It isn't a 5-star luxury mansion on the French Riviera.

Our grandparents loved the water and bought this wood fisherman's cottage in 1948 for our family weekends. Now that 6 generations have spent their summers here, we have more than 70 years of memories! The photo with the blue beach umbrellas shows a recent family gathering of us cousins.
This is not a commercial investment property for us but rather our treasured family summer home that we let others enjoy when we can't. In the photo of the beach picnic, that's our family's 3rd, 4th, and 6th generations keeping up the summer tradition.
Why they chose this property
Sitting on a private beach in a small cove of Long Island Sound, it is the perfect meld of quiet tranquility and nature retreat. But when you need a family outing, shopping, or restaurants, they're close by and just down the road.
What makes this property unique
Quiet, casual historic wood cottage. Large airy windows, bright open spaces. On the water with quiet, private beach. Fully renovated with a cook's kitchen, indoor shower, screened porch, and outdoor wall-to-wall beach-deck. And did I mention that it's quiet? Ahhhh...peace and quiet!
