Nice home - too rigid rules.

The home was well maintained and roomy. There was plenty of space for our group of 12. We booked this house at the last minute after the owner of our original VRBO rental cancelled on us 4 days before our arrival, and we were grateful to get it. We were surprised at the extensive list of rules and clean-up requirements, far more than we’ve ever encountered in years of VRBO rentals, each accompanied with the threat of being asked to leave mid-stay and our deposit retained. We did our best to comply and spent hours cleaning the night before departure. It was very stressful for us as hosts of a family reunion, and for that reason I can’t recommend this rental. In the end, the owner claimed that we damaged a screen, a door threshold and a window covering, and filed an insurance claim. She also claimed very adamantly that we took a pillowcase, but she later found it. We will definitely be back to southern Michigan, but will look for a more relaxed and family-friendly rental.

David, to say I am shocked at your review is an understatement as we went out of our way to accommodate your very last minute booking since your previous house had canceled on you. We are normally booked a year in advance but had your requested dates available due to a cancellation and we have never accepted a booking so close to check in date before as it takes time to prepare the property for our guests. We made an exception to help you so that your family reunion plans did not need to be canceled. We even allowed you to bring in additional day guests even though you never mentioned these plans prior to booking but brought it up the day your day guests were showing up to the house. We do not allow day guest but made another exception to try to relieve some of the stress you were feeling as a result of the cancellation of your previous house. You received the house rules, all kinds of information about the property and departure instructions (which include taking out trash, removing food from refrigerators/cabinets, stripping beds, locking windows and doors, etc. which is not extensive) prior to completing your booking so if you thought they were unreasonable, why did you complete your booking? None of our other guests have had issues with them as you can see from the wonderful reviews we have received for several years and as recently as this year (in photos). A few days after your departure, you advised your daughter had accidently taken home a towel which you wanted to send back and that is the only time I asked if she had also taken a pillow sham that belonged to the comforter set she used that was not found by the cleaning crew after your party departed. I was not adamant about it, it was just a follow up question to the towel having been taken. When it was found a week later tucked away in a closet, I advised you that it was found and not to worry as it was a minor issue. The damages claimed were found after your departure and the claim was filed with CSA for which they have approved and paid so not sure how this causes you to give a bad review, accidents happen and the reason for the damage protection policy. We make sure to take pictures before and after each guest and can therefore account for these damages. There was also damage to our leather couch that you advised to have occurred during your stay but since we could not confirm it had in fact happened during your stay, it was not included in the claim in an effort to be fair to you. Again, your review is not fair because the several times when I checked in with you during your stay or answered your questions, you only had great things to say about the house and mentioned you were enjoying your stay and never once brought up any issues with additional stress caused by the house rules or departure instructions. I did notice based on your questions that you had not reviewed all the information I had sent to help you find items in the house or what we provide, etc. so maybe you were just not prepared for your stay due to the last minute booking. I even provided you nearby family activity information such as farms where to pick fruit to improve your stay and you welcomed the information with follow up questions and interest. Again, I am sorry that your previous house cancellation caused you stress but we tried very much so to help relieve that stress but with your last minute booking you might not have reviewed the information provided prior to your booking with us and you felt unprepared for the stay at our house. But that is not a reason for the unfair review so I would ask that you reconsider your rating. Thank you!
