In the spring of 2010 Martinez Casita opened also for short term rentals. Conveniently located next to Barranca Plaza Casita, a favorite of many Ghost Ranch visitors for the last 7 years!
Barranca is an old Hispanic hamlet just west of Abiquiu above the Chama River. On its small plaza there are a few adobe houses, one of which is this very charming one bedroom, one bath vacation home. The thick adobe walls have built-in banco's in the living area. Throughout the casita are tiled and wooden floors. A woodstove gives you great comfort in the winter. The thick walls keeps the house cool in the summer.
A large garden with fruit trees surrounds the casita.
In Barranca you will find a lively creek coming from the mountains. Follow the spring-fed creek up-stream and enter the Santa Fe National Forest with sensational views of the Abiquiu valley and the surrounding mountain lands. Badlands with goblin-like formations are nearby. The Chama River, along which are cattle ranches, is great for fishing.
The casita is just minutes from Georgia O'Keeffe's home and a short drive from the Piedra Lumbre basin. Ghost Ranch is worth many visits and don't forget to drive out into the Chama River canyon to hike or visit the Benedictine Monastery. The Chama River Wilderness is paradise for explorers.
The acequia, the traditional Hispanic community water system, is still held in high regard in Barranca. The mayordomo decides who irrigates when. The casita’s garden can be irrigated on Saturdays.
Great day trips can be made to Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs, Taos en Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Chama (with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad), Bandelier National Monument, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Valle Grande, etc. etc.
Family gatherings and reunions: Both Martinez Casita and Barranca Plaza Casita offer full privacy. Yet since the casitas are sitting together on one end of Barranca Plaza, they form an ideal gathering place for groups of eight family members or old school friends. BBQ facilities are provided and there are great shadowy spots to linger under the trees. Special rates are available when both casitas are rented.

This was our third trip to Abiquiu and the cozy and comfortable Martinez Casita. We love the area, which provides great hiking and serenity, and the Martinez family members are gracious hosts.
My wife has been going to this area on New Mexico since she was one. Never disappoints. Now we have a wonderful VRBO to try to book early for our next stay.
We really enjoyed the casita it was very roomy and comfortable. The rural setting is very peaceful and made for great star gazing. Kitchen is stocked with all cooking equipment. Basics like salt, pepper, coffee filters. Bed was comfortable. Would definitely stay again!
I really enjoyed my stay in this lovely little casita, though little isn't really accurate! It was super roomy with separate living areas, outside pergola BBQ area and views of the mountains. The casita was convenient for exploring the area without the bother of road noise and I enjoyed the bucolic nature of the location. I was greeted by Nimfa, who was super friendly and kind, and gave me some great suggestions. I would recommend this for anyone who likes to get off the beaten track!

Comfy accommodations in a beautiful setting
We had a really enjoyable stay at this Abiqui casita. The Martinez family is most welcoming and the casita is very pleasant, well maintained, and right in the midst of some amazing hiking. We loved being so close to Phantom Ranch, Abiqui Lake and other outdoor recreation areas, and to see Georgia O'Keeffe's home was a real treat. At the end of each day, we returned home and watched the sun going down from our screened porch - and we appreciated the opportunity to pick tomatoes and peppers from the Martinez garden to accompany salad at dinner. Thank you for a delightful long weekend. We look forward to returning and continuing to explore the area.

This place was great! It's much larger than it looks on VRBO site. Floyd is great, super helpful. I have two minor suggestions: 1. put some shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom. 2. There's a lot of light pollution. Abiquiu is a great place for dark sky. Maybe put a shield of some sort on the big street light? Great place!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Martinez casita and our time exploring the area. The host, Floyd, is very helpful and attentive. We had a small mechanical problem that was fixed promptly and completely satisfactorily. Floyd is very helpful with local information. The casita is spacious and full of character. Very comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed. We extended our stay and plan to return. An experience deserving of a top rating.
Northern New Mexico at its best! Our host, Floyd Martinez, very friendly and hospitable, generous and thoughtful in every way. This casita is beautifully situated on high ground affording excellent views and easy access to historic Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch, Santa Fe and many other local destinations. Floyd works very hard to sustain and maintain the property and its gardens; the roses are spectacular! The adobe walled compound was excellent for our small dog and for us as well. There are several excellent outdoor seating areas. The casita felt like home, is well appointed for every need with beautiful local artists' works to enjoy. The overall ambiance is genuine, authentic, warm and comfortable. We enjoyed the AC in warm weather and there are space heaters and a wood stove for colder weather. TV is served by Firestick and the WiFi allowed us to use our Dish Anywhere app. We are already planning our next visit!
Thank you floyd and family!
Warm, fuzzy and comfy. We had an unlimited supply of firewood!!
Did not truly appreciate this until we went to our next location which did not supply firewood nor did the host tell us we needed to supply firewood. We were freezing the first night because it was too late to find firewood. Communication was great. Floyd is a fantastic host.
It was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. The host and his parents are the best people to know. We have become good friends over the years and will keep staying there in the future.
We enjoyed our second stay here and will certainly be returning again. Floyd is a wonderful host and the adorable adobe has everything it claims and more. The view is spectacular, the drive up to the casita is beautiful with the fall colors ( beautiful golden leaves of the cottonwoods down by the river), and the casita itself is so clean and well stocked. We love the serenity that the place offers and yet, it is only a couple of miles from Bode’s store and the Abiquiu Inn where they serve the most delicious food. Definitely a five star stay!
Absolutely beautiful place to stay. Quiet, private, spacious and clean.
Totally recommend this for anyone looking for a great place to stay.
Would love to go back one day!
