SCENIC CABIN 35Ac Peace&Quiet Creek Pets Hiking 35min-MesaVerde, 5min-SandCanyon
The cabin is located in the heart of the Four Corners area. If you like exploring red rock canyons, have an interest in the ancient peoples of the Southwest or just want to get away to a stunningly beautiful area to enjoy the peace and quiet while relaxing in the space of 35 acres just off a paved road in canyon country, this cabin will fill your needs. Make this your private getaway to a land filled with history and ancient mystery. This cabin feels remote but is only a 1/4 mile down a well maintained gravel road from a paved road and provides a base for taking advantage of all that the four corners has to offer. Lots of parking. It lies exactly midway between Mesa Verde and Hovenweep and 5 min from great hiking at the Sand Canyon entrance to Canyons for the Ancients.
Situated along the year-round creek in the midst of the red rock cliff section of historic McElmo canyon, the cabin sits a shady elm grove, next to red rock cliffs and a Macintosh & Jonathan apple orchard. Long since abandoned by the 'Anazasi' who lived in the surrounding countryside from its mesa tops to its canyon bottoms; this canyon was once home to the ancestors of the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico. Their legacy remains visible today as is illustrated by the cliff dwellings across the creek seen from the cabin front porch and the pottery sherds surfacing as the rains and winds uncover buried layers of of an earlier civilization in the surrounding fields.
Once home to Mormon settlers and farmers scattered along the stage coach road by the creek, the canyon is still home to cowboys and ranchers alongside the farmers, archaeologists, artists, stone carvers, horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, foxes, deer, grape growers, wine makers and the very rare occasional mountain lion and black bear.

We loved our stay here. My mom, mother-in-law, daughter, and I had a wonderful time. The cabin was beautiful, the yard and surrounding area was spectacular, and our host communicated well. Thanks for an amazing trip out west!
The kitchen had everything needed and was very clean and organized. One question we had was promptly answered, bedrooms were all well-equipped. The porch and large fenced yard provided a great dog friendly yard, as well as a pleasant view to enjoy on the comfy porch swing.
Our family had an amazing time on this property. This gem is off the main highway which made it so peaceful!!! Plus there was so many places to explore!!!
Overall wonderful cabin and property. It was nice and secluded and had plenty of space for our dogs. It had everything prepped and ready for us to relax, recharge, and explore the surrounding areas! We especially liked the cork board with neat information and activities.
Dramatically quiet escape after full days exploring these beautiful lands. Comfortably, well-appointed home, nestled conveniently near Cortez, dark night skies, gentle breezes. Sleep well, wake up refreshed, seize the day.
Fabulous location in mcElmo’s canyon, next to archaeological preserve. No cell reception in the area, but WiFi is provided, so no concerns there. Rooms were comfortable. The porch with hummingbird feeds was adorable, and kept everyone entertained in the mornings! Sunrises over the canyon were beautiful.
Comfortable country home with comfortable bed. Nice porch swing to sit on and watch the humming birds and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Nice car port. I would recommend the Notah-Dineh Trading Company in Cortez for authentic Native American items. We enjoyed 11 beautiful days at this place and all of the beauty of the surrounding area.

Thank you Ron, we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay!
There were 5 hummingbirds that flew in 3 times a day. We had several visits by the mule deer and lizards. We heard lots of other animals. The scenery and surroundings mountains were spectacular. It was close to many interesting parks and towns to visit. The house especially the back porch was great. It was very well stocked. The driveway in wasn’t as rough as some described. Kimberly was quick to respond to questions. We would be very happy to stay there again. We would bring more mosquito repellent next time.
After some difficulty getting in the house and some wifi mix-up, our stay was wonderful. The location was perfect to go exploring Mesa Verde and Canyon of the Ancients. We had everything we needed for some quiet evenings at home. My grandson loved trying to get pictures of the hummingbirds from the front deck. My husband and I even extended our stay by a day after our family left. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here.
What a pleasant home on a beautiful property in a great location for hiking and exploring ancient ruins! Two ruins are on the property and reachable with a little determination. We enjoyed sitting out on the porch listening to and watching all kinds of birds, protected from the sun by its deep roof. Everything needed for daily life is provided in the house - just bring your groceries. Cell reception is spotty (if you consider that a problem instead of a benefit!), but the wifi works well enough for wifi calling. We look forward to returning sometime!
The property is located a short drive from Cortez and sits amid many ancient settlements (including some on the property). A 20 - 30 minute drive to Hovenweep, five minutes to Sun Canyon hikes, and 30 - 40 minute drive to Mesa Verde. There is an apple orchard on site which had several varieties, ripe for the picking. We saw different wildlife right in front of the cabin along with migrating hummingbirds. We really enjoyed staying here and can't wait to come back
Older country range style house. Spacious lot with beautiful view. 3 car carport. Large 3 bedrooms, great beds, 2 large bathrooms. Open concept living area - lots of seating, large kitchen with a huge island. Kitchen and bathrooms well equipped. Host responded quickly. It is 12 miles west of Cortez on a winding paved county road. An easy drive out. But 30 minutes before sunset, the sun can be blinding. First time the turnoff was a bit hard to find, but easy after that. The main entry from the driveway has a stone stairway with no handrail. We enjoyed the quiet and the beautiful area. Enjoy!

Great location and quiet with a pleasant view. Make Sure you write down the 6 digit code from the owner as VRBO sent an incorrect 4 digit code and you’ll have to drive half way to Cortez to get a signal. Interior really needs an update We splurged 2 on 4 new wine glasses at the thrift store. Rustic ands bit messy. Good for dogs.
I’m late in submitting this. We were there in the fall on 2022. We loved the location but understand that it’s not for everyone. It was a great location for visiting mesa verde and hovenweep. A short drive to some spectacular hiking and breathtaking views of Ute Mountain.
Wonderful house about 20 minutes from Cortez. Loved the view from the back porch looking out to the red rock cliffs. Took the hike to the Kiva on property which was very cool. Enjoyed watching the humming birds and the prairie dog in the back yard. The kitchen is large and beds are comfortable. We spent our time visiting Mesa Verda which was amazing.
Would not hesitate to rent this house again.

The property was well stocked and had the most amazing views. We were able to cook/prep meals with ease. The added personal touches like the binder with information about the area and recommendations, games and plenty of seating was much appreciated. We woke up to enjoy the sunrise most mornings. With my family of 4 and grandparents, we were all comfortable. Close to Mesa Verde and grocery stores.

Nice rustic cabin close to Canyon of the Ancients
We enjoyed our stay at this property and were pleased with the location. It's about an hour from Mesa Verde, but at the back door of one of Canyon of the Ancients' hiking trail. As soon as we mixed up sugar-water nectar, the hummingbirds appeared, which was a treat! The property is clean, provides all the necessities, and was an overall enjoyable stay. We did have a problem with the peacock, but it has since found a new home and should no longer be a bother.

Good to hear that you enjoyed your stay! It's actually 32 min to the Mesa Verde Visitors Center from the cabin and 3 min to the Sand Canyon trail head - the southern entrance to Canyon of the Ancients, 41 min to Hovenweep National Monument and 25 min to Yucca House National Monument. Both Hovenweep and Mesa Verde have many magnificent cliff dwellings and towers with paved paths and rangers. Yucca House is undisturbed - no restoration no paved paths - a few well preserved wall sections and hundreds of mounds - from tiny to 3 stories tall. Interesting to see and wander through, it's at the foot of Sleeping Ute Mountain that dominates the skyline to the west. The TOE of Sleeping Ute marks the December Winter Solstice Sun Set from atop the Great House mound there and the Peak itself marks the June Summer Solstice Sun Set from the same spot. 30 mins away is Ute Mountain Tribal Park - the southern park of the same mesa that Mesa Verde is on. A guide is necessary to visit but it well worth half or a whole day's visit as it contains just as wonderful cliff dwelling without the crowds and provides a more intimate interaction with the tho
For a time, we were on the route of a roaming young Peacock who was fun to watch but lacked perfect manners - he was aggressive if you ran from him. He is gone now. We found him a new home where he is welcome.
We really enjoyed the privacy and location of the home. Covered parking allowed for unloading/loading of gear out of the weather. The home was clean and very comfortable. Kitchen is well equipped. Best of all is how the home faces east to allow for watching sunrise from living room and front porch. We had some problem with heat and hot water, both issues resolved quickly after contacting owner. We would love to stay here again

Perfect for the Occassion
I rented this property for family/friends to stay for my wedding. It was absolutely perfect. Bernard was a pleasure to work with and was responsive to my every request. The view from the porch is breathtaking. The price is right and the accommodations are so much better than the Kelly Place located just a bit further down the road. (I rented both, so I know). My bridesmaids and I used this residence to prepare for the wedding so it will always have a special place in my heart.

The owner and his Grand-kids. For many years I have had an interest in Archaeoastronomy, a blend of archeology and astronomy. I have made numerous trips to the Andes in Peru to investigate Inca ruins with my neighbors. The Anasazi people of the Four Corners region of the Southwest hold that same allure for me - only they lived right in my back yard! There are kivas, stone towers, petroglyphs and sun spirals within easy reach and lots of educational opportunity to learn about it nearby. We felt blessed to find this vacation cabin in the heart of the Anasazi country with plenty of opportunity to explore and to study the ancient peoples and their knowledge of practical astronomy. We hope you will enjoy the area as much as we have.
Why they chose this property
This property has McElmo Creek running through it the red rock sandstone canyon all year long, an apple orchard, spectacular views and borders on the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Our neighbors are friendly, knowledgeable and handy folks: horse riders, healers, Andean & Southwest explorers, farmers, wine makers, fruit growers, and creative people. With sunny Colorado skies only 10 miles from great bars and restaurants in a real four corners small town with that out west county beat, a natural park, and wonderful hiking to Anasazi ruins just out the back door, but far enough from the city lights that the skies are dark and the entire sky is available for viewing.
What makes this property unique
Perfect views from the front porch swing of the red cliff rock section of McElmo canyon. The incredibly dark views of the night sky in the dry desert air, the solitude of being away from town, the slow and peaceful lifestyle, spectacular scenery, finding a new pot shard in the yard, watching the deer and fox, all the apples we can eat, good wine tasting just up the road - these are some of the things that make our Cabin in McElmo Canyon special.
