About this property
SCENIC CABIN 35Ac Peace&Quiet Creek Pets Hiking 35min-MesaVerde, 5min-SandCanyon
The cabin is located in the heart of the Four Corners area. If you like exploring red rock canyons, have an interest in the ancient peoples of the Southwest or just want to get away to a stunningly beautiful area to enjoy the peace and quiet while relaxing in the space of 35 acres just off a paved road in canyon country, this cabin will fill your needs. Make this your private getaway to a land filled with history and ancient mystery. This cabin feels remote but is only a 1/4 mile down a well maintained gravel road from a paved road and provides a base for taking advantage of all that the four corners has to offer. Lots of parking. It lies exactly midway between Mesa Verde and Hovenweep and 5 min from great hiking at the Sand Canyon entrance to Canyons for the Ancients.
Situated along the year-round creek in the midst of the red rock cliff section of historic McElmo canyon, the cabin sits a shady elm grove, next to red rock cliffs and a Macintosh & Jonathan apple orchard. Long since abandoned by the 'Anazasi' who lived in the surrounding countryside from its mesa tops to its canyon bottoms; this canyon was once home to the ancestors of the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico. Their legacy remains visible today as is illustrated by the cliff dwellings across the creek seen from the cabin front porch and the pottery sherds surfacing as the rains and winds uncover buried layers of of an earlier civilization in the surrounding fields.
Once home to Mormon settlers and farmers scattered along the stage coach road by the creek, the canyon is still home to cowboys and ranchers alongside the farmers, archaeologists, artists, stone carvers, horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, foxes, deer, grape growers, wine makers and the very rare occasional mountain lion and black bear.
Keywords: Cabin, large shaded porch, red rock canyon views, creek, hiking.

About the host
Hosted by Kimberly
The owner and his Grand-kids. For many years I have had an interest in Archaeoastronomy, a blend of archeology and astronomy. I have made numerous trips to the Andes in Peru to investigate Inca ruins with my neighbors. The Anasazi people of the Four Corners region of the Southwest hold that same allure for me - only they lived right in my back yard! There are kivas, stone towers, petroglyphs and sun spirals within easy reach and lots of educational opportunity to learn about it nearby. We felt blessed to find this vacation cabin in the heart of the Anasazi country with plenty of opportunity to explore and to study the ancient peoples and their knowledge of practical astronomy. We hope you will enjoy the area as much as we have.
Why they chose this property
This property has McElmo Creek running through it the red rock sandstone canyon all year long, an apple orchard, spectacular views and borders on the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Our neighbors are friendly, knowledgeable and handy folks: horse riders, healers, Andean & Southwest explorers, farmers, wine makers, fruit growers, and creative people. With sunny Colorado skies only 10 miles from great bars and restaurants in a real four corners small town with that out west county beat, a natural park, and wonderful hiking to Anasazi ruins just out the back door, but far enough from the city lights that the skies are dark and the entire sky is available for viewing.
What makes this property unique
Perfect views from the front porch swing of the red cliff rock section of McElmo canyon. The incredibly dark views of the night sky in the dry desert air, the solitude of being away from town, the slow and peaceful lifestyle, spectacular scenery, finding a new pot shard in the yard, watching the deer and fox, all the apples we can eat, good wine tasting just up the road - these are some of the things that make our Cabin in McElmo Canyon special.
