We stayed at this property because our youngest son was getting married. We needed a big house to accommodate our large family and the house and property handled the 15 of us easily. It is a BEAUTIFUL home and the pool is a huge bonus, it kept our grandchildren busy! The owners are great, very attentive and responsive, we would definitely come back for another family event.
We were looking for a house that would sleep 14 people. This family was here from out of town for a sudden death in the family and this house was the perfect place for them all to come together. It was so perfect for the adults and children. The host were more than hospitable and were very helpful.
Second time we have stayed her and the home is absolutely amazing. Clean, well stocked, and the owners are super nice to deal with! The location is also excellent as you can be anywhere in Richmond in 10 minutes. Cannot recommend this place highly enough!!
We loved our stay! The home is historic and eclectic with so much character, and the owners truly thought of everything — the house was fully stocked with all the essentials (and more). It was spacious yet cozy, perfect for our family of three. The hosts were wonderful and very responsive. Highly recommend!
The house was stocked with everything you can possibly need. My family was very pleased with thr amount of space, blankets, etc. thank you for a wonderful stay
We had a family in town for a wedding and this property was perfect for all of the family to stay together.
There were plenty of bedrooms as well as a lot of outdoor and communal space. Would definitely recommend!
The Historic Marshall House was a wonderful place for our weekend stay in Richmond. The house was beautiful, the rooms spacious, the bedrooms very comfortable, and the pool lovely. We would rent this property again for another event in Richmond!
The Marshall House is beautiful and the grounds are so private and relaxing! Although the pool was too cold for us to swim in during our late October stay, the fact that it was uncovered allowed us to sit beside it and enjoy the calming view. The house was clean and equipped with everything we needed, and it’s close to restaurants. This house is a truly majestic piece of history; there are so many places to relax, so many porches from which to enjoy privacy, a glass of wine, or just read a book. It’s incredibly relaxing. The property more than lives up to the photos.
We LOVED our stay for our girl’s weekend! The home is beautiful, all of the details are just so gorgeous. The welcome guide was so well thought out and the neighborhood is just lovely. We absolutely loved the local restaurants. Highly recommend for a beautiful weekend away.
Beautiful home for our family Thanksgiving gathering. Even though we didn’t get to enjoy the pool we were able to enjoy the backyard and the neighborhood for our morning walks. Several coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance and beautiful homes to walk through. The house itself was so welcoming - tons of kitchen gear like spices and oils, paper products, comfy beds, games for the kids and adults alike. Several rooms for gathering and a large dining room table for games and eating together. The hosts were so helpful with any questions we had and the house manual was so helpful. I feel like they thought of everything we needed. Thank you!
We had a great weekend in the Marshall house! The place is absolutely gorgeous and was very comfortable. Kim and Paul were very accommodating and responded quickly to all communications.
The Marshall house was a great experience. Paul and Kim were super helpful, communicative and caring for our group. The listing is accurate, the location is great, the kitchen is well stocked and the house serves a group extremely well. I recommend this house to anyone.

About the host
Hosted by Kim Chandler
We are a busy family of 4 who has over the years enjoyed restoring historical properties and sharing our love of unique older homes with other travelers on VRBO. We are a premier host of Dryden House in Cape Charles, VA, and now have over 50 reviews on VRBO and we are also frequent guests of VRBO properties. We have learned the value of some of the smaller details that can detract from or enhance a family getaway and try to make our guests feel welcome in our home.
READ A RECENT 2022 REVIEW OF OUR 5-star DRYDEN HOUSE BEACH PROPERTY- Best family vacation ever!!!! This property was the nicest house and location we have rented in 25 years. This house had everything you could ever need or want. It was by far the most well-equipped vrbo imaginable!!! We have rented a property on the coast (mostly OBX) for 25 years. For our family of grandparents, 30 to 40 year old children., 8,5,and 9 month old grandchildren.....The Dryden House was a vacation that we will never forget!!
We Strive for quality guest experiences and personalized details. We attribute our past success to repeat guests and often have bookings a year in advance while our guests are still enjoying their stay. This speaks to the VRBO experience of renting a historic home in one of Virginia's picturesque historic districts.
Why they chose this property
We are the third owners of the Marshall house in the last 100 years. We have taken on the challenge of some neglect and embraced the opportunities of restoring this property to its former glory. Between guests, in the year to come, we will be on a mission of constant improvements such as updated paint colors and appliances. We also have big plans for the outdoor space, an inviting fire pit, an extended grilling area, and plenty of additional seating. This hopefully means that all our guests have something new to look forward to this season. We welcome suggestions for improvements in all ways big and small as this home is intended to be a lifelong project for us as we head towards retirement.
What makes this property unique
Location! Location! Location! Great neighborhood to enjoy the 56-acre Seminary campus with its historical charm and walking paths and nearby parks and tennis courts. We also have a nearby community pool free to all guests with an outdoor toddler water play area and the Arthur Ashe walking trail and tennis courts in Battery Park.
The relaxing & private saltwater pool is an added bonus in summer, plus a large grass area behind the guest house is perfect for volleyball, bat mitten, boules or croquet.
Fantastic chef's kitchen with gas cooktop, beverage Frig, and commercial ice maker, this is truly a home away from home where serving a large meal in other short-term rentals is often a chore, where serving dishes and oversized cooking pans are scarce.
Private parking is another plus for guests having more than one vehicle a must as overnight parking in the city nearby can be a challenge. The unique low-profile front porch allows wheelchair accessibility and the first-floor queen bedroom can accommodate guests who have trouble with stairs. This house has something for everyone as far as private spaces and patios. Great for larger groups who still value privacy and a quiet atmosphere.
