Your stay at Toney's Landing begins each day at sunrise when an endless array of fowl and fish swoop onto your lines, sweep down from the sky, and gather to be your visual joy and even your breakfast. God brings them fresh daily, and you don't even need a fishing license as the pier is private. The Osprey, Blue Heron, and Bald Eagles are your custom airshow while you wait for a tug on your line. Two crab pots await your bait, chicken quarters from the grocery store work fine, and soon you will have your fresh caught dinner as well. Fast internet will keep you in touch with the world you have left behind, and three wide-screen TVs are available for your relaxation. Toney's Landing is named for a bootlegger who ran moonshine from Virginia boats up to his customers on Capitol Hill during Prohibition and even today; you can venture out to legal wineries and distilleries in the area or take a 20-minute trip to Solomon's Island or down to St. Mary's City and Point Lookout. Your best adventure is to simply fix your coffee and enjoy the morning on your private picnic table on top of the pier and keep a watchful eye on your lines. Tall ships, historic Oyster Buyboats, fast power boats, and slow-day sailors will glide by while you ponder why you would want to be anywhere else. Wonderful Anniversary getaway, lots of relaxation and fishing
We really enjoyed our stay, Ken was awesome. We fished a lot, relaxed, enjoyed the beautiful sunsets. Will defiantly stay again and recommend this property.

Wonderful guests to have the pleasure of hosting, and glad to have them enjoy the fish and scenery. Amy and Ricky couldn't have been more gracious and respectful in the way they left the premises.
Great little cozy, comfortable place with all you need. Could use a deep cleaning, specifically in the bathroom. Area is beautiful. Owner was very responsive, friendly and helpful.
We all enjoyed the pier the most. The stay was lovely. The young children were not there every night for the stay, however the pier was very convenient for meeting family on the water.

Our perfect guests had great weather and were entertained by dolphins nearly every day while the bounty of the Potomac visited their hooks and crab traps. These wonderful folks treated Toney's Landing like their own home and we look forward to their return. Thanks to Pam and her family for their business and friendship.
We loved our stay, it was very nice and quiet spot. Ken the host had everything we needed. The sunsets were just beautiful. Thank you Ken for a great start to our vacation.

When your guests bring gifts, this of genuine New Hampshire Maple Syrup, the benefit of their visit is just getting started. The crabs were the first of the season and the fish just hadn't gotten out of the last days of their school, hopefully, Malissa and Pete will return again to teach the Croakers how to sing. Great guests.
Property was adorable and cozy. Wish we were staying longer because it felt like home. Host made so many things available to us. Host was a selling point. He was like a tour guide, giving us info on places to eat, shop and helped us out with crabbing. Came over to say goodbye on checkout day. We would highly recommend host and Toneys Landing to anyone.

Guests were unbeatable and as welcome as the Apple Pie they brought with them from home. They were excellent guests and were a pleasure to host. Jenny and family will be a blessing for anyone to have for a visit.
Loved this place right on the Potomac River...all the comforts of home! Next time I hope I can bring my boat and dock on the pier. Very secluded, but not far from good restauraunts and Leonardtown business district. Ken was an excellent host and made sure we had everything we need and was very responsive. We will be back later in the summer when the crabs are more plentyful. Nautical decor with very cool folk art pieces, local artwork and maps through out the house.

Steve and his son Derrick did a great job of relaxing and hunting down every crustacean that dared to come near their traps. They are fun folks and a pleasure to have as guests that truly appreciate the sunsets, fish, and crabs, and we look forward to having them return.
My husband and grandson fished from morning to night. We just fell in love with the place. First time when it was time to leave we wanted to stay. The owners were more than accommodating. The nicest person you could ever want to meet. He could not do enough to make your stay relaxing. We definitely will be coming back.

Perfect weather for our perfect guests was enjoyable to know that many fine-finned denizens of the deep arrived to entertain them with continuous reel fun. Looking forward to having this family return again and explore more of our local authentic restaurants that feature seafood brought in by boats, not by trucks. Thanks for having a great time and hurry back.
I've stayed at quite a few VRBO properties but this experience was by far the best! Our host was very active in making sure we had everything we could possibly need for an enjoyable stay and the amenities were above and beyond what any of our needs might have been. The only downside? Not enough crabs wanted to get caught! I'll gladly return here again and again and won't hesitate recommending this property for a pleasant, relaxing vacation!!

They are wonderful guests, and I recommend anyone to have the pleasure of hosting them.
Toney's Landing was everything we had hoped for and then some! The property was exactly as pictured! There were so many personal touches and extra little things that it felt more like staying at a relatives home rather than a vacation rental. The atmosphere was so peaceful! Fishing and crabbing were amazing! We ate our daily catches nightly for dinner! Our host Ken was most accommodating and it was hard to leave because conversation just flowed so nicely with him! If you are looking for a wonderful place to just relax and escape reality for a bit, this is the perfect place to do so! While it was our first visit to Toney's Landing, it certainly will not be the last!

Every host should hope that Lisa and Jim book with them as they enjoyed the bounty of the river from dawn to dusk and were the perfect guests in every way. They left the cottage better than they found it with great adjustments to decor and tasteful touches. Consideration and courtesy mark this fine couple and we look forward to their return, though the fish and crabs might not be as enthusiastic.
Quaint little house along the Bay. Quiet area and filled with essentials. Our host had a welcoming stocked house for us. Bottled water, coffee, seasonings, snacks, linens, towels, toiletries too numerous to mention. Very thoughtful of the individuals renting the house. When we arrived it was raining and our host was waiting with an umbrella to welcome us.
Ken (our host) lived next door. A wealth of knowledge, suggestions about the area and restaurants to eat.
He showed me how to set up and empty the crab traps.
Great choice. Thanks Ken for the hospitality

Lucky to have such entertaining guests who were ardent fans of the bounty of God's wonderful Chesapeake Bay. Enjoyed having y'all stay. Please return.
Had an excellent week at the property. Ken/Donna, the owners, are fantastic. House was stocked with snacks, spices, and everything you need for a crab feast. Location is away from the mainstream but easy to find and WELL WORTH IT! Figured out the Wi-Fi TV with Ken's help and will be looking to dump FIOS/cable for good at my home. We had the most relaxing time here and will consider returning next year. You get your own private fishing pier with 2 crab pots provided. This was an awesome stay, completely relaxing, and the Eagles, Ospreys, and Herons are visible and very close every day. Absolutely amazing bonus! Thank you for everything Ken & Donna. Glad you liked Paula's brownies!

It is a pleasure to see such great folks enjoy Toney's Landing with the million-dollar view across five miles to Virginia, be serenaded by a continuous flyover of fascinating waterfowl, and soak in a good amount of life on the Potomac in God's Country. No one could ask for better guests than Paula and Dave.
This maintained, quaint 1950s waterfront cottage was equipped as described. The owners lived next-door and Ken was very friendly offering local and surrounding history as well as ideas/reviews of places to visit and see. Although we did not catch any fish, there were fishing poles there for us to use. In addition, two crab pod‘s were available for crabbing. The neighborhood was very quiet offering as much solitude and restful sleep. The house, even though it was a two bedroom and one bath, suited us nicely for all of our needs. We are hoping at some point to return to this area and if this property is available we would rent again. Thank you to the owners for helping us feel welcomed.

Kathleen and Doc are a pleasure to have as guests and embraced their visit with enthusiasm in gleaning the best of local eateries and historical waypoints. We will be sure to have the fish out of school and on their hooks on their next visit.
My wife and I loved our time at Toney's Landing. It was a beautiful little respite on the Potomac River in an iconic 50's cottage. The setting is lovely; incredibly private with spectacular views 24/7. We caught some small fish but the big draw was 67 keeper-size blue crabs in 3 1/2 days. 5 star room service, marble floors, spa onsite and turndown service? Nope, you're looking at the wrong place. This is a homey comfortable-as-an-old-shoe-style fishing cottage. Our host was very helpful and provided all sorts of snacks, spring water, and even some bait and two crab traps. We spent much of our time on the private dock fishing and crabbing and watching birds, including bald eagles and numerous osprey. We saw dolphins one day as well. Will strongly consider returning next year!

The crabs miss these folks already as they provided them with the tastiest chicken of any avid crabbers the entire year. Excellent guests in every way.
The owner seemed very nice and checked in daily to see how we were doing. Since the property is directly on the water, that is the most desirable aspect. The home is, as other reviewers have noted, full of every necessity: food, dishware, linens, etc. The only downside is that because the home is older and has not been updated structurally, it is very musty, which can wreak havoc on those with allergies and asthma. In addition, the well water that is untreated and has a heavy sulfur odor may or may not bother some as it did us. In short, my son and I left a couple days early due to the odor of the home and the well water, although these aspects might not bother everyone. Again, the owner checked in with us daily, but other than placing many air fresheners around the home as he had already done before our arrival, we knew there was nothing more that he could do, so we lost two days and went to a hotel, which was disappointing.
Amazing little cabin! The host was one of the most welcoming and accomodating hosts we've encountered from our many trips through VRBO. He really cared about the quality of our stay and communication between us was excellent.
The pictures are true to what we walked in to. The kitchen had all the needed amenities, cooking utensils and spices.
The bedrooms were decent and had comfy enough beds. The view from the back sunroom was absolutely amazing!
The fishing was excellent off the end of the dock. We caught numerous perch, one very tiny flounder (and one behemoth that stole one of my best hooks and bobbers! He was huge!!!) and were able to have a decent fish fry for dinner. There were a few provided crab traps from the owner, with him showing us how to load bait and how to use them. We didnt catch any crabs, except for one very small one who kept slipping out the sides. I think he was just happy to come and go as he pleased :-).
Overall, this was a great find of a listing and a wonderful, quiet getaway for a long weekend. We will definitely be back! Thank you so much!!

Our guests were some of the most diligent fisherfolk that abounds in God's Country of the Chesapeake, and it was a pleasure to have them stay as our guests.
Great guests, and welcome back anytime. Thank you for your business and for choosing Toney's Landing.
About the host
Hosted by Toney's Landing
THE FISHING SEASON FOR 2024 IS HERE. See the photo in the Living Room selection for a Blue Channel Catfish caught on March 30, 2024. The Potomac River is yours to enjoy and explore just like Captain John Smith did centuries ago. If you consider yourself a Geezer, you have found the right place. The fish and crabs are here waiting to meet you, and vessels of all kinds cruise, steam, sail, and pass by for your endless parade. The first colonists landed in front of Toney's Landing on March 25, 1634, and you can venture out to the historic island on a water taxi from the nearby Potomac River Museum and spend the day. Solomon's Island, Point Lookout, and Saint Mary's City are twenty-minute drives. Solomon's Island and Point Lookout are short land trips while your boat can take you up and down the Potomac to many great spots to dine, dig for shark teeth, and, of course, the real deal - TO FISH. For the purist without a boat, don't worry; you don't need one. That is why you need to make Toney's Landing your regular fishing heaven and just fish from the pier.
Why they chose this property
This is God's Country, he made it, and it is up to you to enjoy it. Waking up for the sunrise will be a pleasant surprise as the morning sun illuminates the shoreline of the state park across Breton Bay while the daily sunset is spectacular. Even a sudden squall can provide a dramatic turn to your stay.
What makes this property unique
Bring your own kayak, or just pick up bait for crabbing and fishing. Rods are not provided, and crab traps are on the pier. A well-maintained boat ramp is about a mile away; launch your boat and bring it around to enjoy for the day; a slip at the pier is available to tie up for a few hours but is too exposed for overnight or rough weather. Boat lift on the pier is inoperable. Plenty of room to park your boat trailer at the house. Take day trips from here on your boat down to the great fishing at the Target ships near Point Lookout or upriver to catch perch and even blue channel catfish. Here is a recipe for Catfish Tacos provided by Christy Henderson from Buzz's Marina, located about 20 minutes from Toney's Landing. You can trailer your boat to Buzz's Marina and launch there for quick access out to the Chesapeake Bay or arrange a Charter fishing trip. 301-247-7887 or find them on Facebook or their website.
We cut the catfish into longer strips vs. the chunks we normally do because we were putting it into taco shells, but I liked it in strips better than chunks anyway, I think.
I rolled the fish in Essence (Emeril’s Creole Seasoning) which was :
2 ½ tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried leaf oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme
Combine all ingredients thoroughly and store in an airtight jar or container.
The fish was wet, so it stuck really well.
I put House Autry fish fry in a baggie and dropped the fish in and covered it with the House Autry, and fried it.
I think prepared this way, it would make a great sandwich. Michael thought it was the best fish taco he ever had.
